  1. I made 2 trips from my home near Chiang Rai to Doi Mae Salong recently, and both on a 125cc Honda Dream. I am a heavy guy and was in 1st gear for some of the steepest hills but I made it just fine.

In Mae Salong I stayed at Shin Sane Guest House and found it more than acceptable. The folks there were very friendly.

A copy of their business card is at this link: http://donhandley.com/11a2011/msalong21.jpg

My photos from those 2 Doi Mae Salong trips are here:

I found this article about "Motorcycling the Chiang Rai Loop" to be quite helpful personally.

  2. VF, perhaps you can advise me. A couple of weeks ago I rode through Phaya Meng Rai on the 1326 to Ta. I turned left there onto the 1020 and rode north for about 10km. Then I turned right onto the 4018, which is supposedly an approach to Phu Chi Fa.

I was on a 125cc Honda, so maybe I was doomed from the start, but I made it as far as the Doi Phaya Phitak Viewpoint and gave up.

My question is, is there an easier approach to Phu Chi Fa, and if so, what is the route?

If you had gone right on the 1020 to Thoeng and made a left at Thoeng you would have eventually found two routes to Phu Chi Fa. The first and shorter route is the 1155, not too many kilometers from Thoeng. The second longer route 1093 is much closer to Chiang Kham and takes the high road, first passing the beautiful Phu Sang Waterfall.

Both of these roads are much further than the route over what we call locally Doi Yao, which is shown above.

In terms of the grade, or steepness, are all 3 routes about the same? I am more concerned about the grade than the distance, since my 125cc motorbike is so puny and I am so heavy - the weight to power ratio sucks. The Honda Dream did, however, pull both the wife and I to the to the Phra Boromathat Chedi at the top of Doi Mae Salong this past Sunday.a

  4. Major parties all support plans for rail link from Denchai to Chiang Rai

Democrats, Pheu Thai, BJT say they would push to build line from Lamphun

Major political parties contesting for House seats in the July 3 election have promised to build the long-awaited Denchai-Chiang Rai railroad.

Kanok Wongtangarn, a party-list MP candidate from the Democrat Party, told a Nation Channel session in this northern province that the planned route, from Denchai in Lamphun province, would be further connected with southern China, Burma and Laos in later stages.

Wanchai Jongsuthanamanee, an MP candidate with Bhum Jai Thai Party, said residents had been waiting for the railway project for a long time but he would speed up the project's implementation if his party won a place in the next government.

The Transport Ministry, which was overseen by the party during the Abhisit-led coalition, had made preparations to seek a Bt174-million budget to conduct a feasibility study on the project.

A rail line from Denchai to Chiang Rai would help lower transport costs to and from this northern province and boost its competitiveness as a centre of a four-country-cross-border economic development area involving Thailand, China, Burma and Laos.

Kanok, of the Democrat Party, said caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had also instructed the Finance Ministry to conduct a feasibility study on extending the route from Chiang Rai to the southern Chinese province of Yunnan.

There was a preliminary plan to link northern Thailand with southern China via a high-speed railway, he said, so as to boost trade and investment in the 10 northern-most provinces of Thailand.

Samart Kaewmeechai, an MP candidate from Pheu Thai party, said it was also ready to push for implementation of this railway project.

"However, we will do it as part of the high-speed train project from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and then Chiang Rai, Laos and southern China," he said.

  5. Anyone ever heard of or owned or know anything about Lifan motorcycles; more specifically a Lifan LF200GY-5A?

I am looking for something, economical, but with a little more power than my Honda Dream to haul my 17 stone carcass up the hills.

  6. Earlier this week I bought tickets for my wife and I to travel from Chiang Rai to Bangkok next week.

We are going down on AirAsia and returning on Orient Thai.

The cost for two people for the flight to Bangkok on AirAsia was 3,711 baht.

The cost for two people for the flight from Bangkok back to Chiang Rai on Orient Thai was 3,100 baht.

  7. House almost finished. The Mrs. and I are moving in next week. Village of Tri Kaew in Tambon: Wiang Neua, Amphoe: Wiang Chai. Just across the street from Wat Prang Tri Kaew.

We've been living in an apartment in CR for the past 3 months and in Chiang Mai before that.

  8. I'm sure someone will be along with better directions. If you know where the condotel is or Ricco's Bar & restaurant, then just head south down that road for a few hundred metres. Its walking distance from there.

The ones on the superhighway are heading up towards Makro, you can't really miss them on both sides of the highway, there huge.

If you do happen to pass Rico's , check out his cheese burgers, orgasmic. He's also started to sell Pizza's , they looked and smelled perfect. Sorry for digressing, I guess I'm hungry :)

Thanks to everyone who helped me out on this one. We found just what the wife was looking, for heading up towards Makro today...potted ones about 1 meter tall for 200 baht. Looking forward to tracking down Rico's. I could do with an orgasmic cheeseburger.
