  1. Should have started years ago, they must have seen the lack of customers, and also using airlinequality.com or other blogs they could have seen the problems and acted accordingly.

Now put the prices down and some customers might use them.

75% customers per flight, cannot believe that for International flights, for national flights okay.

prices down? You have to be joking! Things like that don't happen at Thai!

they don't get it and they never will get it

There are just so many better opportunities than Thai

normal Thai method is put prices up,to compesate for lost custom.

  2. Just curious: How much does a big company like 7-11 or Tesco-Lotus pay for a plastic bag? I'm betting a lot less than 1 baht. Can this become a significant source of revenue for them? Should they be required to donate any "profits" to some environmental program? It's really win-win for them. You bring your own bag, they save money. You pay a baht for their bag, they make money.

I agree with you totally, plastic bags as we know them now should be banned!!!!!!!!!Especially in Thailand where the concept of putting things in a rubbish bin is completely foreign to the locals. All retailers should be compelled to provide bio- degradeable bags at their cost. They can not cost that much more than what is in use at the present. Why should the customer be hit again.!!!

  3. I have said it before, and will say it again! The wording is................"Crackdown on Foreign business" not "Crackdown on Falang business" .

And................................Oh dear !!! not another "Crackdown".

Its about time this government did something real for the country and its underprivilaged population and stopped strutting about like the cockbird in the chicken pen.

These incessant "Crackdowns" are utterly stupid, designed to convince the population that they are being looked after, when its really those in power who are being looked after. :)

but the government IS doing something!

gamn johnnie foreigner is in danger of giving kun thai an income that exceeds day to day living thus empowering the people which could lead to loss of control... aaarggg

We all know who is running Thailand, and their ancesters were certainly not Thai. This group of people will make sure that nobody is going to disrupt their lifestyle by allowing the natives to become educated, or give the foreign investors an even break and create a level playing field.

  4. For a start:

    - Get the taxi situation legalized, just copy Singapore if you can't figure it out yourself.

    - Stop the thefts from luggage. How, with thievery being a national sport...?

    - Stop security staff from confiscating all kinds of stuff, which is not on the dangerous materials list at the checkpoints. They do that with

a miserable smile and show around their trophies to their accomplices as soon as the passenger is proceeding to the gate. A friend of mine

had his expensive mobil stolen from his travel bag in the confusion these guys created at the checkpoint checking several items at a time

and making a major story holding on to 3 units of canned salmon.

    - How about a nice smile arriving & leaving the country by officials. I arrive in AustraliaI am greeted with a genuine smile and "Welcome to

    wonderful Australia!"

Nothing will ever change...Arrogance & Ignorance are close friends!

Please tell me where in Australia have you received this sort of welcome,so I can plan to arrive there in the future. My experience especially in Sydney is that you are met by rude ignorant people.

New regulations on karaoke, Internet gaming, film ratings set to take effect

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet has approved new regulations that prohibit karaoke parlours from providing drinking or singing partners to customers, with their business licences being revoked if they do.

Deputy government spokes-man Phumin Leetheeraprasert said the Cabinet also assigned the Office of the Council of State to adjust some of the wording before the regulations are implemented.

The new rules, which also cover Internet cafes, allow children to play computer games for more than three hours and up to six hours a day, says Culture Minister Teera Salakpetch.

Those under 15 will be allowed to use the service from 2pm to 8pm from Monday to Friday and from 10am to 8pm during holidays and school breaks, while those aged 15 to 18 can play games until 10pm, Teera says.

The Cabinet also agreed that an IT system to keep kids under 18 from playing computer games for more than three hours a day should be ready before a ministerial regulation amendment is proposed later, he added.

    Seven movie categories

Other regulations approved concern film ratings. The minister said there were seven categories: educational films people are encouraged to see; films suitable for the general audience; films suitable for those over 13; films suitable for those over 15; films suitable for those over 18; films restricted for persons under 20, and films banned from being screened in the Kingdom.

Teera also said that the ministry has finished making the six rating symbols and would submit them to the National Committee on Film and Video in mid-August before they are implemented.

The symbols are: "Sor" (from the Thai word song serm that means "promoted") for educational films people are encouraged to see; "Thor" (from thua pai meaning "general") for films suitable for the general audience; "Nor 13+" (Nor is from naenam meaning "advisory") for films suitable for those over 13; "Nor 15+"; "Nor 18+", and "Chor 20+" (Chor is from chapor that means "specific") for films restricted for persons under 20.

The two regulations should take effect in mid-August.

  7. The Aussie bar mat fiasco probably has pretty much killed this golden egg...
    Gloomy outlook for Phuket tourism

PHUKET CITY: -- The Phuket Tourism Association (PTA) has forecast that Phuket hotels will see average occupancy rates dip to as low as 25-30%, compared to 60% in the low season last year.

Only tourists from Australia, the Middle East and India are likely to be visit the island in strong numbers at this time of year, he said.

Lets hope that the tourist that do go to Phuket, give the Aussie bar,and the brainless moron that runs the place a wide berth. He of all people should know how the Thai police operate.

  8. well the economically resposible thing would be to run the two airports, and through better slot management and arrangements of scheduals, make use of a pretty good second airport which has already been paid for.

But I was silly enough to think that they'd do the right thing once, and not even build the new airport. I was wrong. My guess is they'll continue with stage two, spending money that doesn't need to be spent.....

Sorry but disagree on the economics. It is more costly. You need a critical mass of employees and equipment to run both airports. One airport allows an economy of scale when it comes to jet aircraft. The airlines were in favour of the 2 airports at first because of the teething problems at BKK. I use BKK regularly now and the last time I used DM was in Dec. DM was too small to deal with the traffic increases so any talk of it being sufficient was hokum. BKK isn't that bad a place compared to alot of airports in the EU and North America and for all of the immigration problems, try flying into LAX JFK or LHR if you are not a passport holder of those nations. BKK is far more welcoming.

Recently flew into Tullamarine(Melbourne international airport)Suggest you bring packed lunch as it will take hours to clear customs.

  9. Try Grand Apartments by Surin Hospital on Thanon Saboran (Saboran Street). Decent single room abodes and nice open air lobby. Majestic also has longterm rentals available. Good luck.

AVOID Grand apartments like the plague, unless you like to be ripped off. This is speaking from personal experience.Reports on Majestic apartments are all good.

  12. Tourists complain of being cheated in double pricing scams

Authorities admit the problem is not new

BANGKOK: -- Several complaints from foreign tourists about being ripped off at seafood restaurants during the New Year holidays have alerted the Department of Internal Trade to take action on unscrupulous businesses, officials said. According to complaints revealed by deputy director-general of the department Songklod Ubolsing, foreigners claimed they were charged 200 baht for a dish of stir-fried morning glory, while some have paid 4,500 baht for one giant prawn.

In the latest complaint, a group of 10 foreign tourists dined at a seafood restaurant, ordered a few dishes and were charged more than 45,000 baht.

  13. Thailand allows people entering the country to buy only 10 packs of cigarettes and no more than one litre of alcohol.

Just one litre? Most bottles of liquor are 750ml. That pretty much means that only one bottle (of anything) can be purchased, unless there happens to be a 250ml bottle of something. There were times that I would buy a bottle of whiskey and another of wine. I guess that won't be taking place again.

Not sure where you do your duty free shopping, but all the spirit bottles I have bought in the last 5 years in Australia, Thailand. Laos, and Cambodian duty frees have all been 1 litre.

  14. :o:D

Two threads I came across today

    ITR and "Beer of choice"

LP and "how many countries have you visited"

Put them together , turn them around and ask

all you much travelled beer drinkers "What is the

worst beer you have ever tasted".

"beer" with no alcohol content DO NOT COUNT.

That's just a problem Muslims will have to deal with.

    I nominate Egyptian "Stella"

    (no connection with Artois)

    :D

    Budwiser

    , what a joke of a beer.

    No Contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. I have flown with them on a number of short haul routes. They are a low cost carrier with very few frills, however aircraft were new and everything was clean and comfortable

as for classes on board, I am not sure about the longer hauls but short hauls only had one class - cattle !!

Only one class on Jetstar and is a budget airline. They fall under the Qantas umbrella, but dont publically like to admit it. They are run as 2 seperate organizations (on paper) but this is not the case in real life. They are a great airline if you want a cheap ticket and can get in early. They work on a tier system just like Qantas domestic and is first in first served.

Just a simple reminder to always check specials of your bigger airlines aswell before rushing in and purchasing a ticket on Jetstar etc. Reasons being is that at times the cheap seats get sold and the prices alot of the times work out to being the same as SQ, TG, MH, QF etc but without the same level of service offered.

    ITR :o

Can understand why they would like not to be associated with Qantas(world worst airline)flew with them once in 1980.Swore I would never do it again and have kept that promise. As for Jetstar I have only checked their fares on line once, and they did not compare very well with SQ fare.
  16. Interesting that tourist visas will now be valid for a full 90 days. That saves the 1 mth extension fee of 1900 Baht (2 mth+1 mth). I presume a tourist visa costs about that 2000 Baht. I.e. for the 30 day visa runner/2 times tourist visa the costs just fell 3800 Baht compared to the 2+1 system.

Investment visa: glad that they will grand-father renewals.

    Cheers!

    Not too sure about that!!!!!

Just got a tourist visa in Savvanaket Laos valid until 30/11/2006.Issued on 2/10/2006.

SO much for 90 days without an extension.

    Cost 1000 baht. : :o
