  1. We are talking about going to Pai soon also. Does anyone have a recommendation for accomodations in town? We would like a clean room with a fan and a private bathroom. If there is air conditioning that would be a plus, but it's not a requirement.

Also, I found on a Web site that during Nov-Mar, Amido's hours are:

    high season (Nov-Mar): 12:00pm-10:00pm

    low season (Apr-Oct): 6:00pm-10:00pm

The Web site had a copyright date of 2004 so I'm not sure it is to be believed. Does anyone know the hours? And are they opened every day of the week?

    Thanks...

I can confirm that at least the 'high-season' hours can't be trusted, as I learned today at about 2 pm... Bummer, but I found another pizza joint a hundred meters away, just across the bridge... Fairly tasty pie.

But I can't remember the name of the place, except that it is a women's name...

Not many people around town, it seemed to me

Thanks Ajarn. We'll probably be going up there next week and I'll try to remember to ask if they have any set hours.

    Ajarn and anyone else:

We went up to Pai and Amido says he opens at 6pm. The phone number for Amido's Pizza Garden is 011-797-283.

We also went to the Bepop for the first time. We asked earlier in the day and they said the band started at 10:30pm (normally we're in bed by then). Anyway, we stayed up and the first band was very good, but only played until 11:00pm. We left before 11:30pm.

  2. We need to find a place in the general Chiang Mai area to store our auto and about 10 cubic meters of personal effects from 1 March to September. We are looking for some place secure with minimal flooding of potential.

We looked at a moving and storage place, but the price was so high that they thought that renting a house would be cheaper for us. We also looked at a high rise studio apartment for 5,500 per month that will probably work, but we were hoping to get something less expensive, maybe further from the CM center.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  4. We had lunch at Duke’s yesterday. We certainly concur with your review. We had the salmon tacos, sirloin sandwich and pasta with shrimp, chicken and baby vegetables in a wine sauce which even included a healthy dose of capers. Both the pasta and tacos were excellent. The meat was good in the sirloin sandwich, but I found the grilled buttered bread and sauce a little overwhelming.

The portions are huge so we never got around to dessert. -- Ulysses G. --- You must not have eaten for days in order to finish one of the Duke’s meals and have room for dessert!

As reported the prices were very reasonable for the quantity and quality of food. Our total bill for 3 meals (no drinks) was under 600 baht. Thanks for the tip. We will definitely go back.

  6. Thanks.. We were trying to find Dacheso (spelling?) the other day and couldn't find it. We were looking for yogurt. Also, we agree with you all that the NZ cheese is pretty good.

Has anyone noticed that some of the hard cheese you get here taste and smell like soap? Yuck...

  7. Amido's in Pai was the thin crust type. The sauce was tasty as well as the toppings.

We tried Mr. Chan and Miss Pauline's on Canal Road. It was okay. The sauce was too sweet for our taste. Maybe they didn't have it down yet since it was a new branch... We also tried some sausages there. I thought the garlic one was delicious.

When we lived elsewhere, we used to make our own pizza with a pizza brick, pizza paddle, etc. It takes a long time when you make the sauce too. It was the thick bread crust kind of pizza. We'd make extra and stick it in the frig for leftovers. It's fun, makes a mess (corn meal all over the place), but takes time and all our equipment is not here. Anyway, so we like the thick crust type of pizzas too...

We'll have to try Pom Pui or Il Forno. Thanks.

  8. Just an update

We were in Pai last week and remembered this thread so we stopped for a pizza at Amido’s. Not only was it the better than any pizza in Chiang Mai, it’s the best we’ve had in Thailand. They served it with a bowl of fresh basil and chili olive oil. To go along with the good food, the friendly staff complemented the good food.

Anyone found good pizza in CM yet?

  9. Sojourner,

    They've moved...

If you are standing on Chayapoom Road and you can reach out and touch Mike’s counter with your left hand, continue forward about 50 meters. There will be a large Photo shop on your left. Turn left immediately past the Photo shop and you’ll be at the entrance of the Libernard Café.

We brewed up a pot of their ‘Supream Mocha’ this morning and found it thoroughly enjoyable.

    Good Luck,

    Elaine

  10. FYI... Libernard Cafe moved. From Chaiyapoom and Chang Moi Rd, pass Mike's Burgers and a Photo Shop on Chiyapoom Road, then turn left. We had some deliciously brewed coffee there and bought some coffee beans.

  11. Don't forget that electricity here is 220 volts 50 hertz (actually anywhere between 0 and 250 volts according to my husband). So be sure to check personal appliances like hair dryers, electric toothbrushes, shavers to make sure that they are compatible.

  12. I was looking for the "year-end bonus for housekeeper" topic from last year since it was moved from the Chiang Mai forum. I found it under "Real Estate, housing, house and land ownership". Anyway, your comments were very useful to us last year and may be useful to newbies this year.

  13. Anyone able to recommend some good Thai cooking classes? (Preferably ones that aren't hideously expensive).

    Cheers.

Sompet Cookery School in Chiang Mai. We've taken several classes there and sent over a dozen people there and they've all really liked it.

  14. Thanks to all who replied  -  yes, I have not been washing the rice before cooking.  I did not think it was required with rice these days.  Got desperate and washed it afterwards once, to get the glue off, but forgot and used tap water.

Found the local Foodland who finally have some real yellow lemons !  So thanks for that tip too.

Found Basmati rice too, but seems silly buying that when there are so many Thai varieties.  I did realise that old rice (day old anyhow) is best for fried rice.

Armed with my new tips, I will try again.  Thanks again to all you 'super-ladies' for replying.  Wonderful !

You are right that it is silly to buy Basmati... Someone mentioned "Hom Mali" rice. That is the long grain rice and is very good. That is the Thai rice to buy for everyday cooking.

There is a Thai 'sticky rice' which is normally steamed and normally eaten in Northern Thailand.
