  1. If I didn't have 30 US, I paid 1300bht at the border and 1400bht at the Laos embassy in Khon Kean, Thailand. I left at normal times and didn't pay to leave. I left each time before 2.30pm. Thanks for the info on Mr Keating, contributing to the friendship bridge, didn't know that.

Because Australia paid half the cost of the Friendship Bridges (foreign aid by way of PM Keating) ,
Aussies appear to get a minor discount on visas. And very few hassles. Laos is a relaxed country anyway.
Stay a few days there if you can. Very good cheap food, accommodation and many varieties of Lao beer from dark to amber.
Aussies pay US $30 at the moment. My slightly used US money was refused. A new $100 US could not be changed.
The border official rubbed his fingers on a part of the bill and declared it to be genuine.
He wished me a good stay in Vientiane and charged my Thai Baht 1300.
It cost 10,000 Lao kip to leave the country. Cheers mate

like i said i have been there 5-6 times and i have always paid $35 but maybe it was me just paying $5 more. Yes i'll change in dollars just before leaving at Superich checking that notes have no defects
    thank you

  3. No problem mate. Enjoy laos

Havent fully committed to Vietnam for a visa. Kind of cold feeting over the fact I've got 6 tourist visas in there(over 3 years) and have to travel through an airport.

I've gotten 2 tourist visas from Vientiane both in 2017. Would I be safe to get another without getting the blue stamp? I see you guys talking about Savannakhet is that a good option?

  4. Was the Russian lady applying for a tourist visa, or some other kind of visa? I have never heard of a voided tourist visa from Vientiane before. Was she trying to use an agent? Although agents are not supposed to be allowed in Vientiane, at other locations voided visas are often used to justify taking payment even though no visa is forthcoming.
Frankly speaking, I'm not to sure about the story, but I was told she was at Vientiane 3 days ago and was shown the stamp to another lady, who told someone else that she had this stamp. Whether she got it at Cambodia as Joe suggested, or she got it at Laos, I'm not to sure.
I only wanted to understand what it might mean.
    Sorry for the confusion.
    My bad

  5. May I remind all when arriving in Laos and getting a visa on arrival, most nationalities save around 400 Baht by paying in dollars rather than baht. However, the dollars need to be unmarked.

I picked up some dollars in Thailand and did not notice each bill had an identical small ink stamp on it, perhaps from a bank. These dollars were rejected at the Laos border and I had to pay in baht.

I later tested the same dollars at a money changer in Laos and they were similarly rejected. I had no problem changing them back in Thailand.
Yes, you are right, I pay with US$ 31 for Aussie passport, basically saving 300baht. If you got the Laos visa from the Laos consulate at khon kean, they charge 1400baht.

  6. Be aware that, if there is significant time remaining on your existing tourist entry, and you will be away only a few days you have the option of buying a re-entry permit for 1,000 baht to keep your existing permission to stay intact on your return. This avoids the need for a visa exempt entry. If you plan to spend a lot of time in Thailand in the future, you should use visa exempt entries as little as possible. Usually, immigration will not create problems when you use visa exempt entries very rarely (though they can). Immigration has a lot of discretion over whether to grant visa exempt entries and sometimes deny entry when (in the view of the individual official) you have been using visa exempt entries to "spend too much time" in Thailand.
    Good to know,
    Thanks very much
    C.

  7. I believe you received a visa along with that stamp. The stamp does not affect the validity of the visa. If you fly back to Thailand with your freshly issued, unused visa, you will receive a 60-day stay. There is a small chance that you may be interrogated by immigration as to why you spend so much time in Thailand. The safest approach would be to enter Thailand via the Friendship bridge, and fly on to Bangkok from Udon Thani airport.

Applying for further Thai tourist visas is going to be difficult until you get a replacement passport.

    Thanks for reply.
Yes I did enter through Nong Khai with the stamp on the visa, without any problem.
It was for further tourist visas that I was inquiring about.
The stamp says "maybe refused" but that ultimately means No,!
Thanks for clarifying. I'll fly in to Don meung, I months time and see what happens!!
    Cheers
    Chris

  8. With that stamp on your visa you will not be able to get another one in Phnom Penh or some other locations.
It is time to get a new passport.
Having that stamp from the embassy will not affect entering the country.
    Thanks Joe,
So Cambodia won't give one, but flying into Thailand fro Vientiane, will give me a 30day entry?
I got in a few days ago with the stamp on my 4th visa.
    Cheers

  9. Hi,
I got this stamp on the 4th crossing into Laos, at Vientiane. I want to go to Cambodia and get another tourist visa, to enter Thailand, do you reckon, I'll be denied a tourist visa, with the correct paperwork?
Another though would be to go to Vientiane and fly into Don meung, I'll get a Cambodia visa for next trip.
I know there will be an answer in the 1000 odd pages.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    TIA

  10. Are you kidding :) 90% of those guys wake up and arrive before it even opens. I have actually had good luck arriving late right before they shut down for the day, almost no line although it takes a bit more nerve.
Early waker, been there by 6am and people waiting, good chat, time goes by. Have to get the international bus back to khon kean by 2.45pm. Agree that layer is better, but pick up later the next day.

  11. Thanks Joe, I couldn't open you topic on Vientiane. Does it say how many times you can get visas from there? I'm thinking that they saw I had 4 pages left, when I did the visa in Nov. Any views?

On another topic, I'm a dual citizen of UK to. Never used the passport. I guess I'll be able to use it, if I fly into Bangkok? Without an exit stamp from another country?
