Caught a Rail Motor (Train) from BKK to Sakaeo about 20 years ago )))

The entire staff were in an alcoholic stupor and I assume the driver was also as I saw drinks being served to the control cabin ))) Before I got out of the train at Sakaeo , I had an unconscious female conductor at my feet , taking up more than her fair share of floor space !!!

All relatives,,, 2 dead from motorbike Accidents,,,2 dead from drinking too much,,, livers gave out !!!,,, 1 dead from cancer,,, 1 dead from mysterious unexplained illness and finally a 95 year old uncle just died !!!

Most of these require a 6 day event or celebration more like it !!!

Love the 50's 60's Era also... I'm in the Automotive business and know many Thai American car owners around Bangkok...The most popular being Mustangs... Labour + Paint are the cheaper end of restoration...I've imported into Thailand V8 engine + auto parts bascially on a non profit basis...But in return I get good connections in the Industry... Most recently I helped out a Navy Commander who owns 3 x 1965 Mustangs... Convertable,Fastback and notchback...Also he has an Australian XY Falcon...Take note!! Old American car prices have gone through the roof in the last 10 years...

Your wife's experience isn't unusual, though it seems to only happen from time to time.

My younger sister, also a thai-aust dual national turned arrived in BKK on a 'virgin' overseas issued Thai passport and was stamped in no worries. My mother, confused about which one to enter on simply plonked both down on the immi officers desk and they took the Thai PP and stamped her in on that. No questions asked.

Your wife did the right thing by sticking to her guns. Worse comes to worse you ask to speak to a senior officer who over rides them anyway. Presentation of a Thai passport means automatic entry into Thailand.

Next thing you have to organise is your kids Thai passports. The last thing you want for them is a 2x20000 overstay bill for them when they are a bit older.

Getting my wife to deal with anything involving paperwork or officialdom can be exhausting !!! You never know , the threat of 2 x 20k just might do it...I'm bringing them back to Aus. again end of Sept..... One thing Ididn't mention is that Thai immigration told me they treat the twins differently once they are over 7 yrs. old , whatever that means??? The boys are only 6 at present, SO I will be making enquires on the way out...

The GOAL - Get the twins Thai passports !!!

The lesson learned here, and some early posters were already very familiar with these Thai immigration laws, is that if you are a legal dual citizen and have entered Thailand on your foreign passport then you must maintain your visa on that foreign passport and depart using that same passport. Why any dual citizen holding a Thai passport would enter Thailand on a foreign passport is a bit of a mystery to me, well actually just plain stupid in my mind. In my children's case they had arrived in Thailand on a visa in their US passports, one tourist visa and one student visa, prior to obtaining Thai citizenship and the Thai passport. As my son found out to his chagrin, having Thai citizenship and even speaking fluent Thai will not get you excused from paying the overstay fees that may have accrued from not legally extending the original entry visa.

I'm Australian, Thai wife,Twin sons born in Australia... Wife has 2 passports...She entered Thailand with the boys on Aussie passports...Stayed for almost 2 years....I went over to bring the family back for a holiday,,, Went to airport in case of any issues with the twins... No problem with the twins overstay...Wouldn't let my wife leave on her Thai passport... Had to pay 20K after an hour with immigration,,, even dragged the superiors into the discussion, thus wife left on Aussie passport...NOT HAPPY wife...

On returning to Thailand, my wife presented her Thai passport ( the twins have Aussie passports) My wife's account (I wasn't traveling with them) Thai immigration would'nt let her use her Thai passport because of the twins Aussie passports.. She stuck to her guns and insisted she use her Thai passport, (understandably not to pay 20k again) Next our twin hyperactive 5 yr old boys started playing up and screaming... All too much for Thai immigration to handle... They stamped her Thai passport in a hurry and helped her get out of there...

Good to hear there's new blood in the area,,, Arrive back in Sa Kaeo Late January for a month or so... Wife is now in the frog + duck business... She also grows chilli, peanuts, cucumber, chinese veg + sugarcane... One day I hope and pray, she'll ring me up and say,"Darling, no need to send money anymore, I'm making heaps"..... Alas we all have our own Dreamtime..... When in Thailand , I'm in Khao Chakan every second day.... Keep in touch we might meet !!!

Report from Brisbane Australia - On farmer wife in Sa Kaeo...

1st year - Pigs - 4 pens - Lose da money....

2nd year - Pigs - 6 pens - Lose lotta money.....

3rd year - Pigs - 12 pens - Lose crazy ( its not my fault, I like the pig. ) money.......

4th year - Tile the pig pens to fatten hoppy things + Build a large Correctional Centre for a couple hundred quacky things... No report yet,except the Sa Kaeo bank account is maintaining its zero balance.. Its nice to know there's some certainty in this world !!!

Gidday Genghis61 - Will be back in Sa Kaeo 29th March - 24th April.. Looked up the map - Wang Somboon not that far from where I live.. I live in the sticks , Klong Nang Am (Its spelt about 10 different ways, even the road signs dont agree with each other) is about 30ks west of Sakaeo town + about 25ks from Khao Chakan, just to give you some idea.. I'm going to buy a middle size rice mill this trip, or at least that's the plan at the moment.. Wife rang up a couple of nights ago, a little tipsy , the topic of conversation in the middle of alcoholic pauses , was that she wanted to move back to Australia.. Phone call next day - was to say "I've just bought a cow,a baby cow".

I said "Why" She (Sober this time) said,"They were going to kill it and eat it, and it's too young" I -"Its going to be eaten somtime" She -"I want it to grow up first".. ANYBODY! out there , you've got a ready market for your baby cows - just pull up at our front gate and threaten to kill whatever you want to sell!!!!

Same same, hang out in Big C every few days and put the kids in the playpen and enjoy an aircon break.. In the village I live like a Thai,sleep on the floor under a big mossie net, with the fan blasting away. The animals wake me up early and I crash in the hammock a couple of times a day... Nearly came your way a few years back - I wanted to go to the Air Lauda crash site,a few months after it happened.. Alas my wife refused to go and I was reluctant to muck around in the Thai jungle without her interpreting in those days.( 1991 ) - Dunno what the fascination is , but maybe I've watched too many episodes of Air Crash Investigation... Anyway , good to hear from the outher side of the great divide ...

First I have to apologise - not reading your post correctly , what a billy bunt am I .After a long slog all day , I get a bit weary and this is when I do my forum thing. After reading your post afresh this morning , I realise that you are only visiting Nok's family each time you come to Sakaeo... After seeing your photos , I think about a seachange myself...

After this mess up I think I owe you and anybody else reading this a story from Sa Kaeo.

The tale of two cars I drive a 1992 model Thai-Rung (in good condition) and my wife has a 2001 Isuzu Space-Cab Pickup. My wife is a hard working farmer with may different plots of land all over the place. First i'll tell you how she comes by many plots of land. She lends money (mostly to relatives) and in exchange for interest, she uses so many rai of their land until they pay the loan back. With the Thai slowness of paying back loans, it seems we have use of many blocks of land permenantly. At the end of each day working on one of the farms, my wife supplies Thai whiskey to the workers.

About 9 months ago, my wife finished work, had the few olbigatory whiskeys, and then went to visit a girlfriend nearby. I know this girlfriend and family are a mob of big drinkers, because i've been there many times. On the way back from the girlfriend's house, my wife failed to negotiate an off camber downhill corner. She collected a 6x6" reinforced concrete post, then a few saplings, then side swipped an immovable tree and was left hanging over an embankment.

Just so happens, I rang her from Brisbane while she was sitting in the wreck waiting for a large tractor she had arranged to take the pick-up back to our house. Funny, there was no mention of the little accident. I rang her again a few days later and found out all about it. I was arriving in Thailand in two weeks time and I said "We'll have a look at it then."

Not knowing what to expect, I arrived and saw the Pickup. The radiator was sitting on top of the motor, the left-hand door and space cab were pulverised, and the style side panel had been ripped off. Next, I looked underneath to find the steering box had been ripped out and all sorts of suspension damage.

I said "Darling, this is a complete write-off, you'll never fix this in a million years." She said "Ohh, oh... Then, we can go and buy a new D-Max."

Some quick thinking was required at this point, so I said "No no, I meant you couldn't fix this in Australia. But luckily in Thailand, anything can be fixed." I had the Pickup dragged under a half finished shed and spent 3 days dismantling it in 40 degree heat with very primative tools. Most in use was crowbar and lump-hammer. Luckily on the 3rd day, some relatives leant me a socket set so I could take out the steering and suspension. I know a little bit about repairing cars as I had a Ford Wrecking yard in Australia.

Next, I drove to Bangkok in my Thai Rung to an Isuzu parts dealer at Vorajak. I loaded up the Thai Rung with bonnet, headlights, grill, bumper bar, guards, radiator support panel, inner guard panels, left-hand door, space cab panel, style side left-hand panel, glass, air-con condenser + lines, power steering lines, suspension and steering parts, water pump, radiator and hoses, and on and on...

Got back to Sa Kaeo it was now 40+ degrees, had to work with two fans going full blast. I decided to just make the Pickup usable and have it properly repaired later. I lump-hammered the radiator support panel and inner guards roughly back to shape, then fitted all front panels and left-hand door. I then did all the mechanical work, fitted new wheels and tyres, and limped the car 30km to Sa Kaeo township. There I had more suspension parts replaced and wheel alignment. The Pickup was now drivable, and I was a 100K out of pocket. I'd finished the Pickup on Saturday night and had to fly to Australia the next morning. No holiday that time... Just a lot of sweat and ball busting.

3 months later I came back to Thailand. The Pickup was looking sad. This time I only fixed the power windows because the air-con wasn't working. Arranged for my wife to take it to the panel shop. Another 3 months later i'm coming back to Thailand again. I telephoned my wife to pick me up at the airport. I asked her "How's the Pickup?" She said "It's beautiful now, and i've changed the colour from black to gold."

I telephoned my wife again a week before arriving in Thailand and she informed me that my Thai Rung had a 'little' accident. I said "What happened?" She said "Oh, it's only a little accident! Not a big one like I had. Your car should be ready for me to pick you up at the airport in it." I said, "What happened?" She said, "Jed (our chief farmhand) was driving to Kaew Chakan to pick up 6 pigs, he decided to visit his sister who lives nearby and he got drunk. He got so drunk, he forgot about the pigs and on the way home, a big storm happened. He couldn't see very well and ran off the road and hit a tree." She also said, "He came home and cried a lot and was very worried about what you are going to say when you get here." I arrived at the airport, my wife picked me up in her nearly finished Pickup. The good news is, the Pickup looked okay with its new colour and all. The next day, I went to visit the panel shop to look at my car. YUCK! It was painted in a metallic yellow-ish green. I said "Paint it again." This time we agreed on a lemon-yellow (for safety reasons).

Went back a week later to inspect my car, sure it was yellow, but not the lemon-yellow i'd agreed on! My wife hated it.

Another week went by, "Where's my car?" Small problem, we can't find a dog box glass and the only one available is 200km away at a cost of 5400 Baht. Gave them the Baht, they drove my car 200km only to find it was the wrong glass. In the meantime, some Buddah's came into the panel shop, saw my car, and said "You can't paint the car that colour. It's bad luck." (I'm suspicious as my wife hated the colour also) I said, "I give up! You paint the bloody car any colour you want to." I've just spent over 3 weeks in Thailand and never drove my car once and was out of pocket 'another' 100K on cars alone!

I've rung my wife up since and asked "What colour was the car?" She said, "It's kind of green-ish." I'll have to wait for my next trip to see what this means.

This is only one of the little adventures I have in day-to-day life in Thailand.
