  3. Microsoft probing new hole in IE security

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Fresh from patching an Internet Explorer (IE) flaw exploited in cyberattacks on Google and other firms, Microsoft is looking into a newly exposed vulnerability in the browser software.

"Microsoft is investigating a responsibly disclosed vulnerability in Internet Explorer," Microsoft Trustworthy Computing group manager Dave Forstrom told AFP on Wednesday.

"We're currently unaware of any attacks trying to use the vulnerability or of customer impact, and believe customers are at reduced risk due to responsible disclosure."

  4. SAN FRANCISCO - Online employment-hunting service Monster Worldwide announced on Wednesday that it is buying the Yahoo! HotJob recruitment website for US$225 million in cash. 'Bringing together Monster and HotJobs creates even greater access and opportunities for both recruiters and job seekers,' said Yahoo! executive vice president Hilary Schneider. Internet pioneer Yahoo! has been cutting costs and streamlining its online focus in the face of tough competition from Google and the aftermath of a botched takeover campaign by software giant Microsoft.

Terms of the deal include Monster providing job-related postings for Yahoo!'s homepage in the United States and Canada for three years, being paid based on clicks and other 'expressions of interest'. 'HotJobs with its significant customer base plus the traffic agreement are an ideal complement to Monster's innovative recruitment solutions and global reach,' said Monster chief executive officer Sal Iannuzzi.

Monster believes the acquisition will enable it to offer employers a 'significantly larger pool of candidates' given that industry-tracker comScore reported that an average of 12.6 million people monthly visit HotJobs. HotJobs has features and tools crafted for people seeking jobs as well as those looking to hire. Yahoo! bought the firm in 2002 in a stock-and-cash deal valued at US$436 million, besting a bid by Monster at that time.

The sale of HotJobs to Monster comes a week after Yahoo! reversed losses of a year ago and posted its best quarterly net profit since Carol Bartz took over as chief executive. The Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo! reported a fourth-quarter net profit of US$153 million compared with a loss of US$303 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Revenue, however, continued to slide at the Internet giant, falling four per cent in the quarter which ended on Dec 31 to US$1.732 billion. Yahoo! said its annual net profit rose 43 per cent to US$598 million while annual revenue fell 10 per cent to US$6.46 billion.

Ms Bartz has focused on aggressive cost-cutting since taking over the reins of the company a year ago. She said in an earnings conference call that Yahoo! has 'many more new products planned for this year' and would also be looking to make acquisitions.

'For us, 2010 is about acquisitions to make Yahoo! even stronger,' she said, although she cautioned that the company does not plan any big purchases. Ms Bartz, a former CEO of software firm Autodesk, took over as Yahoo! chief executive in January 2009, replacing founder Jerry Yang, who stepped down amid criticism of his rejection of a US$47-billion takeover bid by Microsoft.

Yahoo! and Microsoft, after months of negotiations, unveiled a 10-year Web search and advertising partnership in late July that set the stage for a joint offensive against Google. Under the agreement, Yahoo! will use Microsoft's Bing search engine on its own sites while Yahoo! will provide the exclusive global sales force for premium advertisers. - AFP

  5. some msn users have their password set as automatically signed in.

    :)

"A friend in Sydney had his laptop stolen last week. I am in Thailand. Last few days "he" is popping up on MSN. Is there any way of tracking location? "

    Do you mean MSN Messenger?

That can be accessed from any computer so are you sure it's really the thief and not actually your friend instead?

Also, how would the thief get the MSN password?

  6. post your startup stuff here for us.

those startup that are in running status.

Two things you can do to help cure slow system startup...

    1. Clear Startup Items

Open Start menu >> Run, type in: MSCONFIG <press enter> to launch the System Configuration Utility.

Click the Startup tab. You should see a bunch of check boxes; uncheck those items you don't wish to run at startup.

    2. Scanning for Malware

Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (it's free).

Make sure the program is fully updated before performing a scan. If you suspect your computer is infected, disconnect from the internet prior to scanning.

Select everything that MBAM finds, click "remove selected". You MUST restart your computer when prompted.

After reboot, run a quick scan again; to make sure the system is clean.

thanks i have already used malwarbytes,as for the first part ,how do i know what isnt needed on startup?,sorry to be so dumb.

  7. I think so too.

in my opinion as working in Corporate Thailand, I think you'll be better off to import your Chinese speaking staff

from mainland China, HK, Singapore, or Taiwan who have higher standard in reading& speaking business Mandarin and Cantonese.

Local quality in foreign languages aren't to par here.

You'll have comparable's amongst the candidate and can base your competitive salary within their know-how.

  8. Hi,

    Thanks for your input.

    Good info.

As someone who has been through this process, I can give you a few pointers.

Starting a company will cost money (about 80-100k/year) that you can't afford, best do it in the wife's name as sole trader unless you need a WP / job to get non-O or business extension

Setting up a coffee shop that sells decent (e.g. CoffeeWorld) coffee is not that cheap. We did not do a franchise, which would cost more but they might package up the equipment needed better, so not sure which is best. But consider (for a 40m2 shop):

    - Espresso machine (150,000-400,000 for a new one)

    - Fitting out the shop with basic counter etc (150k - the specialist coffee shop builders were quoting more than 200k)

    - Paper/Plastic Cups, spoons etc (minimum order 20k if you don't buy from a franchisee)

    - Air con, fridge, cake display, till (near 100k)

    - Furniture, plants etc (nearly 100k)

    - Staff at 5-7k per month each, and you need to train them to use the machines etc

    - misc kitchen equipement, coffee grinder etc (40k)

Location, as people have said previously is critical, I would say it needs to be in a place where a lot of people work. We were located near a school and in a big apartment block, but did not get as much trade as we expected and it was not constant through the day.

Excluding amortization and rent/electric costs, it will cost between 15-20 baht to make a coffee, so to support a shop you really need to sell at 40 or more. On a good day we would take in 3000-4000 baht, but overall we were only just about breaking even (minus the initial investment!)

I think we might have been able to generate some profit with a bit of marketing and some better processes to stop 'revenue leakage', but in the end, the thing that killed the shop was that the staff would just quit. No warning, no notice, they just wouldn't turn up one day and that was it, meaning that my wife was trying to run it alone with 2 kids under 4! (at the time). (One of the staff who just left was a family member!)

Luckily it wasn't something we were doing for a living, just as a hobby to see where it went, and I was only around part of the time as my work was primarily overseas.

It would have been nice if the Coffee Shop had made money, but unless you are completely on top of it and generating revenue of 100k/month on >40 baht coffees, it's unlikely that you will.

  9. i agree with your thoughts.

truth does hurts..especially if thru friends are concerned.

    --------

If this guy is a really good friend (meaning there is a good measure of trust between you) then I would definitely tell him. Sounds like this is a casual acquaintance though, so I would probably just stay out of it unless he becomes a good friend.

I think telling him is morally the 'right thing to do', but unless he's in a position to truly believe what you have to say, then best to steer clear of such topics. Don't lie to him, just keep quiet unless he asks you about it specifically.
