You should be OK if you don't stay there over 30 days a year. This is a Federal IRS rule.

Also, don't use WI address for anything official, like to vote, DL and so on. Banks are OK.

If you need US phone# get it in other state. Pre paid T-mobile issues them in any state you want to.

If you're retired and only have SS you really don't need to report anything to the state. I don't.

I keep the address in UT and they send letters etc but I ignore all and I only do Fed tax returns.

My thinking is if I don't open them and know that they are I don't do anything wrong. "Sir - I didn't know...." will work.

I stay max 30 days a year in the US.

I was in California before and to get off the books took 10 years! They are very aggressive to keep folk to pay taxes... Finally I took UT DL and asked them to report my UT residency. That worked.

In Utah Social Security is subject to tax:    States That Tax SS

But like you said, if you don't open your mail you can't get in trouble for not knowing. Because that wouldn't be fair.

Hello .  I am planning a motorbike road trip from Thailand  into and  around  Laos (30 days ish) and want to bring my travel fishing gear  with me . My question is what are the general rules and regulations about fishing  in local rivers, reservoirs etc  as a foreigner on a 30 day tourist visa  ,, there's a  lack of info on the subject online .

    Cheers in advance 🙂

No idea if this is current

  3. The license expires on you birthday. When you get a new one it is valid for 5 years from your next birthday.

If you renew a few days your birthday you'll only get 5 years but renewing a few days after you will get almost 6 years.

And you must be on a permission of stay that is 90 days or longer such as a Non-O, B, ED Visa or Extension of stay for marriage or retirement.

If on a tourist visa or visa exempt entry you will only be able to get a 2 year provisional license. Even if you have already had, or have, a 5 year license.

When you get a new license the issue date will not be the date you got the new one. The issue date will be the date of your FIRST license. My license expires in 2027 and the issue date is 2005.

the sizing is universal for all PP and requires the same background color.....wouldnt call that nitpicking......but here we are

    Not true. For example

    US Passport Photo - 51mmx51mm

    UK Passport Photo - 35mmx45mm

Other differences are that no eyeglasses allowed in US Photo but are ok in UK photo.

The link you posted is from a 1979 law, when there were no e-bikes. This has been amended several times since. From info I've seen if the motor is less than 500W and there are pedals it is classified as a bicycle. This means no registration, no license to drive and no helmet. These new rental bikes looks like they would be over 500W and no pedals so need to be registered, require a license to drive and a helmet.

The current law is still the one dated 1979 but there have been multiple changes to the since then.

I've attached the English translation that is found on the Thai Council Of State website.

I put the link in also but it didn't work correctly afterwards. I'll try again.

    Vehicle Act

    Note the definition of "motorcycle"

“Motorcycle” means a vehicle driven by motor or electric power with
not more than two wheels, or not more than an additional wheel in a sidecar, and
    shall include a bicycle equipped with motor driven devices;

Okay tell me where and how yo7 do that with $5,000 a month. What's the plan?

It wouldn't be difficult. The further from the water you are the cheaper it is for renting or buying. I own a home close to the water and I maintain it, in addition to my Thai condo, for less than 5k USD per month.

I could also live where I grew up easily on that amount. I came from a mid-size town in Missouri with a 2020 population of 20,000.

Until retirement most people have to live where they can find employment. If that is not a consideration then you have many more options. The places with the high paying jobs also have higher living expenses.

Excuse the ignorance, but I have always wondered what would happen if an owner borrowed some money from a loan shark against the blue book, and then got a new blue book from the land office and tried to sell the land?

I assume the loan shark would not register the debt at the land office, like I assume all the banks do?

A loan shark wouldn't accept something like a blue book that has no monetary value as Collateral. When dealing with a loan shark your life is the Collateral.

You don't think Thailand has 'bilateral agreements' with other nations regarding acceptance of driving licenses ?

They don't. All those treaties are multilateral. A bilateral treaty involves TWO countries. ASEAN Treaty (10 countries), 1949 Geneva Treaty (102 Countries), 1968 Vienna Treaty (89 Countries)

The Double Tax Agreement (DTA) Thailand has with the UK is an example of a bilateral agreement.

A poorly worded translation of the law does not change the meaning of the word bilateral.

"A bilateral treaty is a treaty strictly between two state entities. It is an agreement made by negotiations between two parties"

You've twisted your knickers there Jack...   the discussion is about 'Driving Licenses' and 'driving'....  nothing to do with riding a motorcycle....

That said, I also agree that many come to Thailand and ride on the overseas 'Driving' license and thats illegal.. but thats not the discussion.

Have you ever looked at a Thai Motorcycle Licence.  It is called a "Motorcycle Driving Licence"

In the US a licence good for motorcycles is also called a Driver Licence (spelled License in the US) but must have the motorcycle endorsement.

I believe the rule is expired less than one year, simple renewalIf over one year, less than three, then retake the written test, but no driving test.  Over three start from scratch, but..........

Show them your expired license, say it expired while you were stuck outside the country due to Covid.  Wouldn't hurt to try.

If not, then you'll have to go through the full process including driving test, as I've read you are only given one opportunity to convert a foreign license.

Yes. That is exactly what the lady at the Banglamung (Pattaya) DLT Office said when I took my friend there with his long expired license.

There were special considerations for Covid but no idea if those would still apply.

  11. Happened to a friend of mine in Pattaya also. He had an expired Thai license (over three years) and tried to get a new one using his US license and IDP. He made the mistake of showing his expired Thai license and the lady explained that once you have been issued a Thai license you cannot get another one based on a foreign license a second time.

He came back about 3-4 years later to retire here and tried it again but without mentioning that he had had a Thai license in the past and no problem getting the Thai license.
