  1. Debian 5.0 "Lenny" is out.

If you want to try it :

    http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/release/

There are a lot of CDs, but only the first one is needed for a base install (debian-500-xxxx-CD-1.iso).

There is also a LiveCD but I'm not sure at all it can be installed from it.

DreamLinux 3.5, based on Debian 5.0 "Lenny" is also out. It's available with iso files for CDs and DVDs. I installed the CD Gnome image to a 4-GB thumbstick and am very happy with the results. The installation took 1.2-GB as reported with "df -h". It includes firefox, thunderbird, gimp, rhythmbox and a host of other applications. No games are included. I added pysol as the only game. Installation for netbooks is available plus a setup for WiFi.http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Internet-computers-communication-f17.html

  2. I have located and downloaded K3b, but have had hit the usual Linux brick wall of having no idea how to get it going. I now have many many files downloaded all related to K3b. I have no idea what to do now. Why does everything on Linux have to be so difficult? Or is it just me :o ? I just want software that works like Nero. i.e. I click on it. It opens. I copy DVDs. Is this possible? Thanks for the previous help.

Linux applications may not "work" exactly the same as Windows applications but have the same functionality in most cases. It might help if you described the k3b filename, you downloaded. Sounds like you have yet to install it. I've attached a screenshot of k3b when it's loaded.

  3. A free downloadable Linux port of the the Google Chromium Browser can be found at:

    http://www.codeweavers.com/services/ports/chromium/

Various versions of Linux distros are available. I downloaded the Mandriva .rpm version. Chromium installs in /opt/cxchromium/bin. Load it with "./chromium" without the quotes. I done little testing so far. One disappointment is the hardcoding of IE for importing bookmarks. It should come as no surprise that MS fonts are used throughout. But all my installed fonts were available if I cared to change them. A nice touch is showing what the selected fonts look like. All browsers should have this feature. If this is an IE feature, then it's a good one.

    Check it out,

  4. Been looking a little around the net and there seems to be at least 2 Thai Linux User Groups, but unless you read and write Thai they are worthless. I will look for the LUG documents. Someone made a complete HOW-TO on how to start a LUG. I remember reading it a few years ago.

Years ago, a TLUG existed that met at Kasetsaert University, Bangkok, with predominately foreigners. After it folded, another TLUG opened up that operated in Thai which may still exist.

I'm a long-time Linux user but am not interested in joining a LUG. I use Mandriva Linux on my PC and Debian on a Nokia 770 and Nokia 810 tablets.

  5. I'm a long time Linux user. My first distro came from Canada and is no longer available. Thanks to friends at NECTEC, I was able to obtain distros in the early days. First, when only 5 1/4" floppies were the storage medium of the day for users - 50-odd floppies. Later, when 3 1/2" floppies were the rave, the floppy count dropped to 30-odd floppies. I've tried several distros but nowadays stick with Mandriva and PCLinuxOS. I avoid Debian-based distros except for their live/-cds/dvds. And my Nokia 770 WiFi Interent Tablet which comes with a Debian distro.

For solving Linux problems, google is my friend. Over the years, running a SCSI Zip drive was my biggest problem that I could not solve. Oh, and that 2-gig floppy drive. Linux has come a long way in handling hardware. Hardware drivers still remain a problem for users migrating from M$. BTW, I never advanced further than M$ Win 3.1 on any machine, I owned. Computing is a hobby for me rather than a livelihood.

I will try to visit this forum often.

    Same Announcement in English

    --------------------------------------

    Dear Valued Customers,

Here in Thailand, there will be new computer-related crime law, the Computer Crime Act B.E. 2550 (2007) which will come into force from 18 July 2007.

CSLOXINFO Plc. would like to suggest to our customers that they study the provisions concerning computer-related offences, authority and legal responsibilities of all Internet related parties on the Internet and general computer usage.

We have located the relevant Act details for you to click below and read for yourself (unfortunately only the Thai version is available from the government currently).

    http://www.lawamendment.go.th/newlaw.asp or http://wiki.nectec.or.th/nectecpedia/index.php/Main_Page

Should any current provisions of an Internet Service Provider, be found not to be compatible with the new Act, the Internet Service Provider will of course adjust the applicable terms and conditions.

In addition, we are currently preparing a guidebook with some simple explanations of the major provisions for easier understanding. It will be published shortly and sent by post to all of our customers and uploaded onto www.csloxinfo.com later on.

Given this opportunity, we hope you can apply the new Act to your home and business in order to help reduce Thailand's exposure to computer related crime.

    Sincerely yours,

  7. I have a Linksys WRT54G v5. I use it with a T43p IBM. The setup was very easy and everywhere inside the house and even outside the house the computer says it is a very strong signal. I have a Thai house.

The router itself is kind of cheap looking and has two antennas but it works great. Had I seen it outside the box, I would have chosen another brand. :o

I have a Linksys WRT54GL with third party firmware Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c. With this firmware you can change the standard transmit power of 28 mW to 256 mW. A maximum of 100 mW is safe, though.

Also think about building directional antennas yourself for a few baht. See www.freeantennas.com.

    Petch01

I also have a Linksys WRT54GL and am using it right out of the box. I can access it from anywhere in my home using a Nokia 770 Interent Tablet. I purchased it for 2250-baht in July and have had no problems with it.

  8. Linux users in Thailand have their own (exclusively English-language)

    website now.

Check out http://bangkokpenguin.org/ for information, news and forums,

with an emphasis on the local setting.

Not a Linux user? Sick of the constant battle against computer

viruses, frustrated by software crashes, shocked by the outrageous

cost of the monopoly's products? Linux is the operating system used

by people who refuse to tolerate these problems.

Tux the Linux penguin extends a warm welcome to everyone, especially

    refugees from tyranny!
