PHUKET, 31 October 2018 (NNT) - The narcotic situation in Phuket has been evaluated to be at moderate level, with Krathom leaves being the most commonly used drug, said Provincial Governor of Phuket Phakkhaphong Thawiphat.

He presided over the meeting of Phuket Provincial Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Command Center participated by government officials.

He said some 7,000 drugs-related arrests were made in September most of which involved the trafficking of drugs.

The most common item found and confiscated from those arrests was Krathom, followed by methamphetamine pills or Yaba, crystal meth or Ice, and cannabis.

Officials have also found an increased use of heroin in specific groups, which had been smuggled via buses or private vehicles concealed among other items, or boats at small piers, or hidden in packages sent by private carriers.

The province has ordered related agencies to set a more systematic drugs prevention and suppression plan, and to step up investigations to prosecute those allegedly violating the law and reduce drug uses.
