Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Jarungwat revealed that Thaksin, who was in Russia to receive an honourary degree from the Prekanov Economic Institute, had been forced to ask for a new passport at the Moscow embassy after losing his briefcase at the fast-food takeaway, reported the Bangkok Post newspaper. It was not made clear why Thaksin, whose family fortune is estimated at 3 billion dollars, had chosen to eat at a McDonald's outlet, a US-chain best known for its modest prices. The case, which was taken while he was eating in the fast-food diner, also contained legal documents for a lawsuit against members of an anti-corruption body investigating him, according to the Bangkok Post. A Thai foreign ministry official said Thaksin reported the loss to Russian police and applied for a new passport at the embassy in Moscow. ‘We have issued a temporary passport to the former prime minister,’ he said. Thaksin’s lawyer said the bag contained dollars, pounds and rubles worth up to 8,700 US dollars. As such, the Thai Embassy in Moscow should provide him with a temporary travel document as they would do for any Thai losing their passport abroad. Normally this document is limited in time. From one to 3 months maximum. Long duration passports are only issued in the country of origin. Therefore he has to come back to Thailand and request a new passport and a new visa for UK as an ordinary Thai citizen. I hope that at the UK Embassy in Thailand he will be treated like any other Thai person requesting a visa for UK. With the many pending court cases against him, should he be given a visa for UK? I'm sure he already has one or two passports from countries where you can buy citizenship for an "investment." With the many pending court cases against him, should he be given a visa for UK? No. I am still awaiting a reply from the UK Home Secretary asking why he is permitted to reside in my country. If this scenario does not happen, he is not treated as an ordinary Thai citizen. He isn't an ordinary Thai citizen. Imagine 60 million of him. When the party got up to leave, they found that Thaksin's briefcase, with his passport and about $9,200 worth of money in U.S. and Russian currency, had been snatched. Shinawatra and his bodyguard went to McDonald’s, where the politician’s briefcase with passport, personal belongings and money was stolen. Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, overthrown in a military coup in Thailand in September 2006, was robbed in Moscow on May 21st in McDonald’s on Arbat street, 52. Shinawatra came into the fast food café together with his bodyguard, who carried the politician’s briefcase with documents and cash. I am just wondering whether it can give a pause to at least one of khun Thaksin bashers: they like to present a man as a kind of malicious clown. Why prestigious Academic institutions honor him? Why businessmen around the world show so much respect for him? Why leading agencies want to have interviews with him?
