Wan survives the cut The Cabinet shrugged off public distaste on Wednesday and appointed controversial Wan Yubamrung and Chonsawat Asavahame as Assistants to cabinet ministers. The duo survived a debate, during which even PM Samak agreed, that their appointments were of dubious taste. But the full cabinet met and approved the entire list of Secretaries and Advisers to cabinet ministers, and ex-nightclub brawler Wan, along with Chonsawat, who is currently on trial for assault and battery on a policeman, made the cut. PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair announced the list without fanfare. Wan, son of Interior Minister Chalerm, is to be Secretary to Deputy Public Health Minister Chawarat Charnveerakul as expected. Chonsawat, son of Puea Pandin Party Chief and Samut Prakan province political powerhouse Vatana, will serve as Secretary to Deputy Interior Minister Sithichai Kohsurat. Wan, who changed his name from Wanchalerm, was involved in a brawl at a Bangkok nightclub in 2001. He was convicted of assault in 2004 and banned from entering entertainment venues for two years. His brother Duang was accused of shooting a policeman to death in a nightclub brawl during the same period, but was acquitted after witnesses told the court they didn't see anything. In spite of these well publicised concerns of Thailands citizens that cover all sections of society, they continue to appoint these two thugs to such prominent positions. This also looks like the setting up of the next generation of corrupt politicians who are cloned from the existing old guard of corrupt individuals, who over the years have bled the country dry of it,s coffers via their self serving objectives, unless they are stopped in their tracks and thrown out of office. Thaksin loyalists get key government jobs Samak seen as failing to get his men installed The Cabinet yesterday endorsed the nominations of ministerial Advisers, Secretaries and Assistants with several key posts awarded to loyalists of deposed PM Thaksin Shinawatra. In focus were the appointments of Gen Ruengroj Mahasaranont, Pol Gen Chamlong Iamchaengphan, Pol Lt-Gen Wichianchote Supachotrat, Natthawut Saikua and Pol Lt-Gen Chat Kuldilok. A source close to the Cabinet said the selection of the political appointees showed that the deposed PM had pulled the strings. "The former PM usually appointed people close to him to key posts. He made the decisions alone and did not pay attention to the image [of the appointees]," said the source. Ruengroj and Chamlong, former Deputy Public Health Minister in the Thaksin administration, were made Advisers to Prime Minister Samak. Ruengroj was apparently awarded the job for being a key man launching efforts against the coup-makers and helped the PPP during the general election campaign in the North. Plenty of indicators that the government in power is the TRT and it was banned. So how far back has the clock turned now? Are we pre coup yet? If not certainly very close. Wan Yubamrung and Chonsawat Asavahame were included in the list of Assistants and Secretaries to cabinet ministers approved yesterday. "If Chonsawat is in, Wan will be in too," Samak replied tersely to questions as he emerged from the meeting. The issue was over and he would not talk about it anymore, he said. He earlier opposed some names proposed by the PPP as Aides to Ministers and Deputy Ministers. He did not give names, but said they were subjects of criticism. Apparently democracy is better. It would also indicate that speculation over increasing paper education levels are not so far leading to more discriminating voters, in fact seemingly the obvious when Samak can first be voted in as Bangkok Governor in the city where he played such a key role in bloody events in the 1970's and voters are known to be "most educated" and now as PM, after such a distinguished career of brutality, corruption and mismanagement in public office. But we know you love to play devil's advocate Chownah and mostly people seem to indulge you your little fanciful whims and strange takes on reality. Wan is getting a high position on the back of this alleged "reform". It's his responsibility to show that he is indeed qualified to be a role model for Thai youth. The three were later acquitted by the ruling of the criminal court. Chonsawat on the contrary, is facing a court trial for assaulting police and refusing to have an alcohol breath test at the highway patrol checkpoint. Both individuals were often seen assaulting others with their societal status as sons of powerful politicians. Despite recent build-ups of criticism against both appointees and pressure for Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to replace them with other candidates, Samak affirmed reporters yesterday that the two appointees will remain on the list. On the contrary as to how they were given these important posts, they should not become ministerial assistants based on cronism and who their parents and / or their asociates in crime are, but based on their hard earned, genuine qualifications and proven ethical demeanor We have pictures of him holding a cigarette instead. No personal reference to yourself by the way Plus, just qualifying what should be the criteria relating to such important positions within the government at such priviledged and important levels. How demoralising these sort of arrogant snubs on law abiding citizens are, and more importantly, who are more qualified on all counts to / and indeed have earned the right to these positions. Let us hope that they do not loose heart altogether and that they will eventually witness a fairer society and it,s government representatives rightly recognising and rewarding their efforts accordingly. At the same time treating the likes of these thugs and their ilk with the contempt their efforts have rightly earned them !!!!!!! One does not have to be a defender of the current lamentable government to know the above is inaccurate and frankly rather silly hyperbole.Despite the inclusion in minor posts of riff raff yobs like Luuk Chalerm etc, it doesn't contain mass murderers which cannot be said for some previous administrations.One wonders whether you actually have done the reading or reserch to have an understanding of the extensive criminality in some Thai governments since WW2. I agree that a shallow analysis might support your statement.....heck, a shallow analysis might support ANY statement.....but even though a "shallow analysis" often means "biased interpretation" (this sort of thing fits in really well here on this forum where just about all the posts are based on shallow analysis) I'd like to see a shallow analysis of some previous gov't...can you provide one?...how about a shallow list of everyone in the gov't for starters......I won't hold my breath. A devil's advocate will take any side to create an arguement....don't think that's what I'm doing but you are entitled to your opinion and to express it here. I wouldn't say that without me the regular perps would be complacent....they would probably be bored since they seem to have gotten a bit desperate since those people who like to think about whether Toxin's policies were right or wrong (instead of just declaring all of them bogus at the outset) have by and large stopped posting. Chonsawat retreats Chonsawat Asavahame, a son of Puea Pandin Party's chief adviser, has declined the post of Interior Minister's Secretary, saying he wanted to clear up any questions about him first. Chonsawat is facing court charges over an attack on a police officer. sriracha john Posted February 21, 2008 Share Posted February 21, 2008 (edited) Perhaps with Chonsawat's rationale of declining a position or removing himself from the government because he "wants to clear up any questions about him first" regarding pending criminal investigations and/or conviction appeals, it will provide the impetus for others who are in exactly the same situation to follow suit, such as the Prime Minister, the House Speaker, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, the PM's Office Minister, the Deputy Government Spokesman, the Chief Advisor to the Puea Pandin Party, the Advisor to the Foreign Minister, and the Secretary to the Deputy Public Health Minister to identify but a few. One does not have to be a defender of the current lamentable government to know the above is inaccurate and frankly rather silly hyperbole.Despite the inclusion in minor posts of riff raff yobs like Luuk Chalerm etc, it doesn't contain mass murderers which cannot be said for some previous administrations.One wonders whether you actually have done the reading or reserch to have an understanding of the extensive criminality in some Thai governments since WW2. I wrote "two decades" i.e. going back to post Prem and Chatchai era, but you start talking about post WW2. OK, let's just change the goalposts and try and score cheap points when one is desperately thrashing around looking for excuses for your occasional hero Thaksin. Sad the depths some people will sink to...... So, tell us all about the "mass murderers" you're referring to since Chatchai (excepting Suchinda) and tell us exactly which govt. contained the greater number of convicted criminals than this present "lamentable government" (hand-picked by your paragon of virture Toxin).
