We Wanna Learn Sailing!

we live in samui and are looking for someone who likes to teach us sailing on his own sailboat. we dont prefer the traditional sailing school, but someone who feels like having some fun time with an asia experienced german couple in their 30s. prost!

You want a private boat owner to take you on his boat and teach you how to sail? You better bring lots of money with you. Private lessons on a private boat arenot cheap. Are you expecting to be on the boat all day? You are looking at a few hundred american dollars per person each day for something like that. Remember if a guy can afford a boat he had to pay to learn somewhere and sailors realize early in their sailing life a person either pays or doesnot stay.An owner has major investment in a boat. Boat owners donot just let anyone board their boats.

But try being a dock rat for a few months see if any sailors take a liking toyou and will let you board their boat. Sailing a boat with a complete stranger can be stressful to say the least.You will find most guys donot want to bother and donot have the time.

Being a dock rat long enough you maybe able to get on racing boats that need railmeat.You will be able to sit on the high side stay reasonably dry and enjoy the view.

My suggestion is go the sailing school route and let them help you enter the sailing community.You may feel it is a waste but it is pay upfront and get in with the crowd.

Find a racing yacht club. There are often boat owners / skippers that are looking for extra crew. It won't be personal lessons, but you will learn.

The Samui Regatta is coming up, and sometimes there is need for crew. But don't expect someone to actively teach you sailing. You will be mostly used as ballast. But you may pick up on some of the tactics associated with racing yachts while on board. (Depends which boat you are on though!).

If you truly want to learn sailing, start small. The best way to learn sailing is on small dinghies, then move up to catamarans and trimarans if you prefer more speed. Only after a solid dinghy training should you consider boarding a larger craft. Although once skilled in a fast dinghy or multihull, you will be truly bored on most larger boats. A large yacht will never give the feedback the way a dinghy does. Expect as much time in the water as on it for the first couple of days out on a dinghy, but what better place to do this then in the tropical waters of Samui. The only place I know on Samui that offers (private) instruction on dinghies to adults is in Chaweng: http://www.asia-hydrosail.com Although their website mostly mentions trimarans, they have Laser dinghies and several catamarans available as well.

You could try Sunsail in the Fishermans Village. They have boats for charter and could probably provide some instruction but as said before it depends how much you want to pay.
