The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A fire broke out at Robinson Department Store’s Bang Rak branch on Charoen Krung Road on Thursday at about 11am.

Initial report said it started on the first floor and thick column of smoke floated to the second floor.

Shoppers and people in a hotel nearby were evacuated while firemen and rescue workers tried to extinguish the blaze.

The place was just recently closed for refurbishment which makes it even more suspicious.

Oh, OK, that could be suspicious or in fact of course could be a valid reason - construction labourers are not usually the sharpest tools in the box, and doing dopey things that result in a fire is quite within their scope, as happens on building sites from time to time...

"Shoppers and people in a hotel nearby ..."

Hotel?? Central Point Silom?? Actually serviced apartments. The elevator area at the back of the lobby connects directly to the Robinson ground floor, right? Don't recall if fire escape stairways would have opened in the same area or away from the department store.

Have stayed there before, but if there was a lot of smoke sucked in, that might add something to the ambience to be avoided for awhile.

went to go to tops/robinsons there a week or so ago and yes it was closed and workers were destroying the facings and stuff. felt sad for the local street sellers because obviously pedestrian traffic would suffer. thought it was permanent shutdown not just a remake. remake makes more sense as they did have numerous customers previously. they had good bread things at that tops branch.

by the way, wheres the next closest tops in the meantime?

Fire at Bang Rak Robinson
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A fire broke out yesterday morning at Bangkok's Bang Rak branch of Robinson shopping mall, causing workers to flee and black smoke to also enter the Centre Point Hotel next door. The department store has been under renovation since early this month.

No deaths or injuries were reported except for a hotel maid who fainted after inhaling smoke.

The fire, which broke out at 10am, was reportedly sparked in a main circuit box on the first floor. It took some 40 fire-trucks and firefighters up to 20 minutes to get the blaze under control. The hotel was evacuated as a precaution.
