PHUKET: -- The Phuket Red Cross is urging locals and tourists to donate blood in order to get their blood bank ready for the coming festive season when accidents and emergency situations more happen more frequently.

“We believe that during a long holiday the demand for blood will be higher while the supply will be less. This is specifically the case for some blood groups,” Porntip Rattajak, Chief of Phuket Region Blood Centre told The Phuket News yesterday (Dec 9).

She also said that as Phuket has so many foreign tourists, some local bloods groups do not meet with foreigner’s demand. Therefore, she is urging for more foreigners to donate.

“Only 0.3 per cent of Rh Negative blood is found in Thais, but 10% is found in foreigners. In addition, our supply of Rh Negative blood is very low all over the country,” she explained.

“During our blood donation campaign being held between December 21 – January 10, we would like to encourage all locals and tourists to donate their blood on the following days and places:

Giving blood in the festive season is a bit risky, 1. For the farang donor whose alcohol tolerance will be reduced for a few days, and 2. For the recipient of the blood which is likely to have a % alcohol in it. But just the thought of extra blood being needed for the festive season is enough to put potential visitors off coming to Thailand. Maybe a new campaign by TAT "come to the Land of Smiles and give us some of your blood" !!!

It is sad that the Thai Red Cross do not accept blood donations from older people.

I have been a blood doner in other countries for many many years and am AB+ not a common blood type.

When I settled here 5 years ago in my first month I went to donate and was told, "Sorry sir, too old."

That was that.

Many of us older lads are quite ft and able too donate good blood, why reject it due to advanced years?
