  1. Ok made it there today. Took the Red Line up and tried walking along the service road to the plane, but the police turned me away at the road checkpoint. Tried walking around through a construction site and made it across the street from the plane, but couldn't get over to it. So walked back to the main road and found a moto driver who drove along the road, through the checkpoint, and up to the plane. He agreed to wait 5 minutes, but when I pulled out my phone to take photos he started panicking. He was talking so fast I couldn't understand him and my Thai isn't good enough to explain that it's ok - although I guess it wasn't ok. Fearing he would bolt, I took a few more pics and he took me back - 70 THB for the trip which was fair since maybe I could have gotten him in trouble. But I got my pics! ????

  2. Oh man if you could confirm it's still there I'd be so grateful. I'll really be disappointed if it's been hauled off.

I lived in BKK for a few years, then in Phnom Penh where I developed a weird interest in the Khmer Rouge period. I'm now in Hong Kong and COVID restrictions have kept me away from both places for +2 years. I've finally got a return trip to both BKK and PP in June with a list of Khmer Rouge era things to see - including that plane. The plane was Air Cambodge's only Carvelle jet and took Lon Nol from PP to Utapao days before the Khmer Rouge entered the city in 1975. Somehow it made it from Utapao to DMK and (hopefully) remains there.

There were some old DC-3's around DMK (so I've heard) that were part of the transport services that sprang up in the final year of the Khmer Republic. But I can't seem to find the website detailing where they are.

  3. The Bangkok Beatles will play at Black Pagoda on Patpong 2 next Saturday.  I'd like to go and actually listen to the music and relax.  I'm not interested in any company while I'm there or for takeout...just have a few beers and listen to the Beatles.

Has anyone every gone to Black Pagoda's music events?  Just wondered if during their music events there were still girls on the poles and working the room.

  4. Hi everyone. I'm a few years out of LOS so I'm a bit rusty, but I need help ordering ice cream. The Dairy Queen in the small North Carolina beach town I visit has 2 Thai guys working there. I want to order ice cream in Thai to surprise them.

Can you help me translate these phrases...I have no idea how to say "cone" or what the classifiers for ice cream are. :) You can give me the translations in Thai script, but would you please put spaces between the words so I can see it more clearly? Thanks.

Can I have two small vanilla cones dipped in chocolate?

Can I have a hot fudge sundae?

  5. I posted a similar question in 2013 when Mentos Air (not just regular Mentos, but the very strong "Air" flavor) disappeared from 7-11 and someone pointed me to Big C.....I promptly bought every pack of Mentos Air from 3 different Big C's. smile.png

During my annual LOS trip last month, I discovered that neither Big C nor Tesco nor 7-11 nor any other place I looked had them....the ladies in the store said they never heard Mentos Air. sad.png

Has anyone seen Mentos Air around town....anywhere????

  6. Thanks folks...long-haired dictionary is not an option. Not sure that would go over too well with the wife and kids.rolleyes.gif

Looking into glossika. Skype is possible depending on internet speed. Only a 4 hour time difference b/w work and LOS so if the speed works that could be an option.

Luckily, I'm back to BKK in 2 weeks for 15 days of Thai practice and Thai food!!! biggrin.png

    eeya - good chuwit avatar!

  7. Hey everyone. I will be taking a job in a corner of the world where I will not be able to leave my office compound due to safety issues - for 1 year. Since I'll need a hobby, I want to get my Thai up to the next level.

Right now with my Thai skills, I can get around town, order food, give basic directions, a read a street sign or two, but I want to improve.

I will have an internet conenction so any talking with people in Thai will have to be done via skype or the like.

I've tried Rosetta Stone, but I don't like the format. Any suggestions on what method/company I could use for the year?

  8. I can't figure out this sentence structure...I used to live in BKK 2 years ago, but not any more. And when I lived in BKK I lived there for a year. How do I express that? (Forgive the transliteration.)

Pomme u kreung tep song pii leaw.....that's "I've lived in KT 2 years already" so I know that's not it.

Maybe "pomme u kreung tep pen wela song pii leaw"...."I lived in KT time was 2 years already"...still doesn't say I was there for a year.

    How should I say this?

  9. Hello everyone. I'm working here in Jerusalem and walked into a small Asian store...I about dropped my teeth on finding a nice big red bottle of Blue Boy red syrup. My kids loved nom yen daengs when we lived in BKK, but now the exact mix of water, condensed milk, syrup is escaping me. Can anyone assist with the right ratios for me.

    Thanks!

  10. Hello everyone. Curious if someone can share a rule of thumb or grammar rules on how to properly say please. For example, would these be different?

    1)Please give me some tea.

    2) Give me some tea please.

    3) Would I like some tea? Yes, please.

"Noi krub" seems right for #2, but not sure about the others. Also, I see "ka-ru-na" written, but never heard anyone say it.

    Thanks for the pointers.
