  1. There are more probably more expat - Thai marriages/partners in CM than most people realize and it would be fair to say that there are many couples out there such as yourselves who would like to socialize in a mixed setting environment that you live. Most Thai women frown upon their husbands/partners patronizing the bars for obvious and understandable reasons.

I make no apologies or excuses for unashamedly promoting The Bear’s Den as one such venue growing popularity each week as people discover its charms. We have many such customers where new friendships are being developed each week – the guys and girls each enjoying the chance to communicate with ease in their native tongue whilst enjoying their favourite food from our brand new International/Pub Grub/Thai menu, or tipple in a great Ping river setting. The guys also get to enjoy their favourite sports as broadcast live either on the big screen in the main bar, or in the dedicated Sports Bar. With a jam session on Mondays and two live bands on Fridays and Saturdays there is something for everybody.

The pub is professionally run by my partner a long time expat with who has spent his entire career in the hospitality industry – he has a Thai G/F and I myself have been happily married to my Thai wife for nearly 14 years. Pete91846 you have a head start as one of our regular customer couples is Brit/Filipino – drop by some time to see for yourself!

  2. AFTER VISITING CHIANGMAI ON BUSINESS DURING THE LAST TWENTY YEARS MY WIFE AND I ARE PLANNING TO MOVE THERE FOR RETIREMENT.  WE WOULD LIKE TO ASK A FEW QUESTIONS AND HOPE SOME OF YOU CAN HELP:

WHERE ARE THE MORE POPULAR AREAS IN CM FOR FARANG TO LIVE - BOTH RENTAL AND HOME OWNERSHIP?  FOR RESTAURANTS?  AND SHOPPING?  ARE THERE CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS WHERE FARANGS LIKE TO GATHER/SOCIALIZE?WE LOVE THAI PEOPLE VERY MUCH AND APPRECIATE THE CULTURE, BUT WE DON'T WANT TO TOTALLY DIVORCE OURSELVES FROM OUR WESTERN CULTURE.

    THANKS FOR ANY ADVISE.

FONT=Geneva]Hi stuvwg and welcome to Chiang Mai!

earlofwindemere is correct in saying that expats live N, S, E & W of the city. It really all boils down to budget, travel time preferences for shopping, socialising etc. As CM expands the choices increase but I think I would be fair in saying that for most expats the socialising is down town CM.

The Bear's Den is becoming a very popular place for both expat married couples, and expat/Thai couples to meet in a great setting on the Ping river. As and when you arrive in CM pop by The Bear's Den ideally on a Friday evening where you ccan be sure to meet other long time expatriates who could provide their experiences and advice to guide you.[/font]

  3. No idea yet mate. JS will probably pick a venue closer to the time, or we could meet  the Saloon like last time?   :D

Chiang Mai Saloon would be a good place to start the beer flowing and get the old stomach lined but not really walkable to live music places . . . does Foxy Lady have live music? :o

As far as bands are concerned . . . I guess that means places like Brasserie, Good View etc will be on the tour - I've heard that the food at The Bear's Den is back up to scratch, they have live music (every night I believe but don't hold me to it) and . . . and . . . . and . . . . they have Old Speckled Hen on draft since last weekend :D

Off to check out your other thread . . . . . my brother in law plays in a popular (for popular read - does lots of weddings, funerals and other temple related events!) 'Lanna band' - might be too traditional for your needs . . .

    JxP

The Bear's Den certainly does have OSH on draft, the only place in Northern Thailand, a brand new menu, and there are two bands on a Saturday night - all in a great location on the Ping river, perfect for a good piss up. The pub is now under professional owner management and can cater to all sorts of functions - the management being Irish is well versed in piss ups. Admittedly a little out of town but well worth the effort - Give Kevin a call on 09 557 2248!

  4. I have had a water heater installed in my house to heat a shower and bath water .

The problem is that when I just run the water in the bath it is hot but when I switch it to the shower it runs cold.

    Any ideas or suggestions appreciated

The dealer has already fitted a replacement but it was the same

    Rob

The most common problem with these things is water pressure. Most homes have a shallow well pump as standard (small round dumpy unit), which simply cannot provide enough through flow pressure for the internal pressure switch to activate the heating element. If removing the restrictor doesn't work then it's likely you need a higher pressure pump. You don't mention if this is a shower type instantaneous water heater or a standalone instantaneous heater - they are different! If it is the latter and the shower head is too far from the heater unit but the bath outlet is nearer, this again suggests a pressure problem which is why you get hot water at the bath but not at the shower.

As a matter of interest if you have purchased a stand alone Siemens type instantaneous water heater then unless you have a minimum 30 to 35 psi of water pressure it won't work. If in doubt contact Llanna Lytics an excellent local company specialising in water delivery systems. Your description of the problem and my own experience suggest you need a high pressure Grundfos or similar pump but be aware you are looking at 15,000 Baht or more!

  5. The Bear's Den on the river.  Maybe a bit too classy looking, not sure if they'd be up for that.

What's classy got to do with it??? The Bear's Den is up for anything and I think you will find we more than fit the bill. Give Dave a call on 01 288 4037 to discuss your requirements in more detail.

    Cheers,

  6. Scheduled to start next year, the study will be completed within 10 months, following which the bidding process to select key contractors will be started.

"The construction period should not be longer than two years," he said.

Two years... yeah, right. They've been dicking around with all of the highway underpass construction for what, about the last six months now, with not an awful lot to show for it. What sort of rail system do you suppose is gonna get constructed in two year's time? :D

Don't hold your breath waiting for a subway in CM. The last Govt had a feasibility study carried out by International Consultants a few years ago who projected a ridership of 1.5M per day - pretty good really considering the population of CM!!! :D

The 140M study by CMU is a smoke screen by Toxin to show his folks that he is doing something for CM and to build it in 2 years - dream on Metros are a minimum 4-5 year programme at best although I suppose that now we have built one in BKK we have a pool oof highly skilled Thai Metro engineers who can undertake the task! :o

Ever wondered why we have so many new underpasses instead of round-abouts? Round-abouts are cheaper less divvies to go around... :D

  7. For the just past Thanksgiving Holiday I cooked a couple of Thai Turkeys....   Mine were very, very high in fat content and consequently oily...... I would be interested in hearing from you after you roast the turkey, how it came out

If possible look at and under the front chest cavity below the neck...  there must have been a 1/2 inch of fat all across this area....

Also if you would , what was the price per kilo and the weight of the bird ?

Look forward to hearing your report

    Happy turkey eating...

I won't be thawing and roasting her until xmas, so it will be awhile before I can give a full report. The price is 150 baht a kilo. This bird weighs 5.24 kg. The price tag says that it is a CP turkey, but the wrapper lists some other company from Pratum Thani.

Is this a fair thought for Xmas :o

I Am Glad I Picked You

I saw you across a crowded room.

Among all the others that were there,

The lights seemed to shine down on you alone.

I knew then I had to have you for my own.

Willingly, you came with me to my home.

From the car, I carried you in and through the door.

Looking at you, I admire your body, your well-shaped legs, and breasts.

Slowly I remove what wraps around your body so tightly,

Fitting you like a glove, exposing your tender skin.

From your neck I remove your charms

And carry you off in my arms, to the warm water that awaits.

The water cascades down your neck

Flowing over your soft breasts then, making your legs glisten with wetness.

Droplets of water cover your taut skin.

My hands rub your body, ummmm running them threw the beads of water.

Making them trickle down off your body.

I place my fingers inside you.

You are warm and moist, so ready.

I carry your still dripping body, to a laying place,

So that I can put inside you what was well prepared to enter you

Before we even came through the door.

As soon as I lay you down your legs spread open wide.

You are ready now and so am I.

I put a little in slowly at first, getting a feel for how much you can take in.

I put in more, you take it willingly.

In anticipation, faster and faster I put it in

Pushing it in deeply as far as I can, until I can't put any more in,

    You are so tight.

    With your legs wrapped tightly

Not wanting to release any of it

I make you so hot for a very long time

Until you’re sweet juices escape from within.

Then I taste you, with my tongue at first,

Your skin is so soft and tender.

I taste more of you with my mouth

You are so hot, and moist, you taste so good.

    Your juices coating my mouth

Making me drool in anticipation of eating you more, with every taste.

"Oh yes", I say to you,

    "I must say Grace"

"Thank God for Butterball turkey.... Amen" :D

  8. It's been said before but I'll say it again at the risk of being accused of being commercial, The Bear's Den British Pub/Bar & Restaurant would be pleased to host regular meetings for Forum Members. It's an ideal centralish location next to the Rimping Condo, car parking, loads of space, great beer terrace or awesome inside bar with pool, dart and big screen TV for the sports. A discount could be arranged for Thai Forum Members - call Dave 01 288 4037.

And why not promote the venue if it is in context with the topic! A meeting place is wanted, suggestions are offered, no harm in that. Yes, I have a financial interest but as a pub we take a lot onf interest in the Chiang Mai community hosting International Ladies Luncheons, a Slimming Club, Birthday Parties, Kid's Cricket Functions (CMSCA), Charity events etc.

I hope you can work something out - sadly the bear will be off on assignment in India so I can't join you - have fun, and as TBD slogan goes "Where Good Friends Meet" (or have yet to meet?).

Drop by CT and have fun playing pool with the girls!

  9. If you have a love of cricket and are retired or 'involuntarily leisured' (between jobs), or in full time leisure and are bored did you know that Chaing Mai has a very successful Junior Cricket Development programme?

Allow me to introduce Chiang Mai Schools Cricket Alliance (CMSCA).

This is a very worthy organisation which has developed from funds generated through the popular annual Chiang Mai 6's and now has a full time paid Director of Coaching with ECB accreditation.

If you can help they have big ambitions and are in need of volunteers and sponsors to take the programme to greater heights. Full contact details on their web site.

  10. As to a meeting place...... no one yet has mentioned The Bears Den......

  11. The Bear's Den.. not sure if it gets busy these days

The Bear's Den British Pub/Bar & Restaurant must be one of Chiang Mai's best kept secrets. A quiet hideaway with an awesome bar, great ambience and no BG's. Yes Chanchao it has got busier but in the nicest possible way with a good mix of regular expats and Thai. Perhaps its not busy every day of the week but then you can't be all things to all men! The new pool table is proving to be very popular especially on Wednesdays with the Thai wives having a great time - check it out again sometime.

    Cheers,

    The Bear

  12. I see the Chief Financial Officer of TT&T has just been made CEO of CAT Telecom. In the long run, I think this will be good news for all you guys using CAT/TT&T broadband services - IF this guy can overcome the bureaucratic ways entrenched at CAT for so many years.

It's not often that we get the opportunity to throw out boquets but when it comes to TT&T they at least try. When I moved into my present home more than 2 years ago the local TOT/TT&T offices were quoting a 2 year wait for a land line - a fax to the President of TT&T saw not one, but two lines installed within 3 days!!!

A similar situation occured recently when I applied for ADSL. The original promotion was back in March I think when they were offering the free modem but I dithered and missed the boat. (Beware the small print of the present promotion of free modem - I'm told it only covers outlying areas, not the 'established' areas such as CM city & boundaries). When I checked in the TT&T office four weeks ago, the guy in the shop quoted a 6 month wait for my area (near CM prison). I took the forms anyway, filled them in and faxed to BKK, service in 3 weeks!

So if its not the CFO at TT&T himself who is responsible for the good service, they do at least seem to have a responsible corporate attitude.

For those of you interested in the ADSL what can I say? Compared to dial up it is brilliant. We had a bit of a shaky start though because the modem sat there for five days blinking away with no connection. Numerous calls to the customer support (*997, 24 hours, English speaking, very courteous), to configure/reconfigure eventually led to a Technician calling at the house who after methodically checking through everything discovered that the ADSL link had not been made at the exchange! Teething problems perhaps within the organisation but at least they tried and eventually solved the problem.

Once connected, I found the service to be like a breath of fresh air - there has been the odd occasion where the CAT server was down (quickly verified by a call to *997), and yes at busy times it can slow down a bit. Again to TT&T's credit they include a link to the McAfee speed checker on their website TTT Broadband Speedometer which when I checked 10 minutes ago was registering 355Kbps but 200kbps is nearer the norm, and it can drop to as low as 40kbps at busy times but at least it doesn't drop out!

All of the above coincided with a very timely bit of abuse from Loxinfo whereby they arbitarily locked out my connection claiming non-payment of account which was untrue. A patient conversation with their service rep ended when he told me I should be 'more disciplined' in the payment of my accounts - the bill arrived yesterday, I was not iin arrears and the due payment date was 20th June!

Loxinfo service in my opinion has been rapidly deteriorating since the introduction of CSLoxinfo so all this spurred me on to look for alternatives - enter 'Inet Gold'. a prepaid service of 1 year/300 hours for appprox. 4,200 Baht.

I now think that I have a pretty solid set up (in Thailand) for static and mobile computing on the internet in terms of reliability/speed/access through the combination of TT&T ADSL @ 999Baht per month, Inet Gold @ 4,200/year and Yahoo Pop Plus @ $19.97/year. Since my business is largely internet dependent I reckon that in terms of economies of scale versus what I had before that I am a lot better off, and I'm failrly sure that in the long run I will save money.

For those of you asking why buy Inet/Yahoo as well as ADSL?

    * You do not get an email address with ADSL but you can use the service to send mail if you have a free email address SMTP (Outgoing server mail.cis.cattelecom.com)

    * ADSL is a fixed service, no mobility (which is a must for my business)

*TIT - the CAT server can, and will go down from time to time - dial up is a good back up hence Inet Gold (ISP email address/dial up)

    * Yahoo Pop Plus again mobility but is also great back up if the ADSL or INET servers are busy with slow response as you bypass these direct to the Yahoo server which is often quicker.

No doubt in time the service capacity will be oversold (as it was with the Mobile phone in the early days - TIT), and service may slow down at busy times, i.e. early evening. But then again perhaps not? Let's hope the new CFO at CAT at least has the wherewithall to make sure that the capiital expenditure budget has plenty of padding to support system infrastructure expansiion/upgrade.

For now, I'm well happy - and I still have my fax at the ready should I need to rattle the CFO's cage if the service deteriorates...

  13. CT/JBG

on TBD Web site click 'News', click on any logo (e.g. Bingo), click on Members Card on the navigation bar where you will see a sample of the meembers card front and back with T&C to the side of the Bingo card - that's it - to join just turn up at TBD and see Dave about joining...

  14. > Where exactly? Had a look around but couldn't find it? Or you have to register in person at the bar?

On the website look under news tab for details but to register, you must do so at the bar - see Dave

  15. Is this Forum working???

I have posted a message a couple of weeks back re: SMS no response so far.

    Here are two more queries:

    1. I've uploaded my personal photo within the guidelines posted so many times it is fraying around the edges - Why isn't it loading into the messages?

    2. Why can't the address of my web site in my signature be a hyperlink?

    Hello, anybody out there???

  16. CT,

If you check the web site you will find details of social Membership to TBD. Registering entitles members to a 10% discount on F&B during normal hours with the exception of HH/Promotional activities which is not exclusive to anybody in particular - is that not fair? :o By registering as a social Member the card also carries a set of randomly generated Bingo numbers which you can play for FREE!.

We play this every Wednesday at 9.30pm for a bit of fun, and this week the pot is 3,000Bt. Even if you turn up on the night and don't have your permanent Members card yet, we will give you a temporary card which still entitles you to a discount on the night! More fairnesss!!!! :D:D:D

    See you soon?

  17. It is Dave's intention to show all games Thai police permitting. Our licence is until 2.00am so we are looking at a 3.30am ish finish for the 1.45am starts. To date they have not bothered us if we have stayed open late perhaps because we are not in the Loh Kroh area, and set back from the road we are not so 'visible'. IF the police show up Dave has a few 'strategies' to try to fend them off.

As for me? I'll be tucked up in bed!!!
