  1. I've taken my dog to a few national parks, so the rules are not the same for every park. They can clearly see there's a dog in the car when I'm paying the entrance fee and they've still let me in. I do keep my dog on a leash and he wears a harness, not just a collar (and I bring a plastic bag in case he decides to go to the bathroom, so I can pick it up). But they don't know any of this when they let me in, so the rules are obviously not the same for every national park.

  2.  I reckon I'm going to breach this rule then and pay up the 2k when caught. Replacing the passport with all it's stamps if it's stolen is a far larger risk.

Me too. The only time I had to replace a passport before expiration date (years ago, in another country) was when I got caught in the rain and passport got so wet, it was worthless. I'd rather pay the fine if caught.

  3. Thinking of leaving Thailand soon and you need to have your dogs microchipped in order to bring it to your home country. Went to a vet and was told they don't do microchip ping in Bangkok! Quite odd....

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

You need to do a lot more than just microchipping. You also need a special blood test that must be done at least 4 months before your trip. This is for any country in Europe, as well as Singapore and other places. If you're from the US, then you don't need this. I'd recommend calling Thonglor Animal Hospital to get all the details. I'm taking three dogs to Europe in a few months and I can tell you it's a long, slow process...

  4. If you didn't penetrate her and the baby cannot possibly be yours then why even ask? This is a bar girl you are talking about? Since you think there are others it's safe to say she is a bit of a slag?

Of all the replies, yours is by far the least helpful - no surprises but was it even vaguely possible that you might have addressed the question re abortion ? Would you completely turn your back on a woman back in your own country if she told you she had nowhere else to turn to ? All I'm looking for here is some way to dig her out of the hole some lowlife has dug for her - you know and I know how few Farang in Thailand are serious about wearing a condom - branding her a slag helps no one,

Since I'm a woman, I can tell you it's the WOMAN's responsibility to prevent pregnancy. You do not leave that to the guy. It's nice if the guy cares and all that, but in the end, it's your body, so you should care more.

Condoms are for preventing disease. If you want to use them as your only method of contraception and you end up pregnant, you really are an idiot.

Aside from that, if you want to help her because you're a friend, then by all means do that. But I don't think giving her money is the answer. Doesn't she get free healthcare during the pregnancy? Unless she has a medical condition that affects her pregnancy, she really shouldn't have any added expenses until after the baby is born.

  5. If I make a mistake with a golden tree snake then I don't die.

If I set a golden tree snake free and it comes back then it won't kill my children.

This does not apply to cobras, vipers and the like. I want to make sure those don't come back! wink.png

Why not just relocate the cobra or whatever snake it can be, further away from your house..

If you can relocate it all, it means you have it under somewhat control, and should be able to place it in a container of some sort.. Then drive a little out of the city with it.. Or is that asking to much..

I don't have an issue with relocating the snake IF somebody else can catch it. I'm not risking getting bit.

  6. They more or less just sit around all day suffering in the heat.

That is pretty much what soi dogs do...as do Thais...they do not know they are suffering as they are acclimated to the climate...

You have a kind heart...turn it toward the street children who are in dire need of a physicians care...vaccinations...and a decent meal from time to time...

Try not to save the world...just a few at the time...good luck...

I hate it when people respond to a question by saying "your heart is in the wrong place, go help somebody else." The question wasn't about helping children (maybe the OP does that too) or poor people or whatever. If you feel strongly about street children, YOU help them.

  7. I took in an adult soi dog three years ago and I thought she was boring too. Turns out she was just sad/scared. These are dogs that have spent their entire lives on the streets and they don't know anything else. They don't have time to enjoy life or be playful because they're always stressed about surviving.

With time, my dog came out of her shell and is now more playful and lively. I still think of her as "the boring one" when compared to the other two, but I think it's because she's more independent and my other two dogs are more... needy (which I like).

In the end, it doesn't matter. She's such a grateful dog. Sweet, loving and obviously so happy to have a home and somebody who loves her. Please do take the dogs in if you can. You get huge karma points for it, but more than anything, you'll give these dogs a chance to a good life. Nothing beats that.

To everybody else asking for suggestions, please catch the females and spay them. Then return them to the streets if there's no other option. At least you'll prevent more puppies from being born. My local vet here will sell me a sleeping pill I can give the wild dogs (inside a piece of meat). They don't completely fall asleep, but it knocks them out enough that I can pick them up, put them in the car and drive them to the vet to get sterilized. Even sterilizing ONE dog makes a world of difference, so please do that if you can't do anything else.

  8. I don't agree with the death penalty in general. Death penalty for pot? Hmmm... no. That's just stupid.

However, I don't feel sorry for people who are caught and sentenced. If you're stupid enough to traffic drugs (or guns or whatever it is) in a country that has the death penalty for it, then it's absolutely your fault. Too stupid to understand the consequences? Sorry, there's no provision in the law of any country for stupidity.

  9. I have three dogs. One is too stupid to stay away from snakes and one (a Thai dog) insists on hunting them. The third one doesn't care, so that's the only one that's safe.

I don't like killing anything. I'm a vegetarian and except for mosquitoes and roaches, I pretty much leave everything else alone.

If it comes to choosing between my dogs and the snake, however, the snake will go. I can't rely on the two dogs being smart enough to avoid getting bit. So it's up to me to keep them safe. I give the snake time to leave on its own if that's possible, but if that's not working, then I'm calling the security guard to take care of it.

  10. You would do well to bring the dog in to the vet and get all the vaccinations and check for worms.

    Good luck.

I would recommend having him/her de-sexed too unless you really want to breed more dogs. Good luck and I hope it all works out OK and you will have a loyal friend.

It may be difficult to find a Thai vet to neuter a dog.

    Buddhist thing, I guess.

What? Every single vet in Thailand neuters/spays.

  11. Vets make house calls in Thailand. I have a soi dog. We keep a cage in the car port and put the dog in the cage when the vet comes to give shots. I leash her and hold her head to the front of the cage and the vet gives her shots in the back. The rests of the time she has free run of our property as it is surrounded by a high wall and is walked outside twice a day. She gets a bath every two weeks. I use Bayer advocate for flea and ticks and all the other stuff

    • heartworm prevention
    • flea and lice treatment and prevention of flea infestations. The product can be also used as part of a treatment strategy for FAD (Flea Allergy Dermatitis)
    • gastrointestinal worm control including several larval stages
    • treatment and prevention of lungworms in dogs (Angiostrongylus vasorum and treatment of crenosoma vulpis)
    • control of ear mites in cats and dogs
    • control of sarcoptic mange in dogs
    • control of Demodex mites in dogs

I don't know if it really protects against all that stuff but I've had no problems. She is an outside dog and sleeps most nights on a raised storage area in the car port giving her a view over the fence.

As far as I know, Advocate doesn't protect against ticks, right? What do you do for ticks?

  12. Our soi dog never needed any toilet training. He naturally knew to make his business outside and as far away from where he stays at possible.

Absolute best guard dog, he always woke us up 1-2 hours before the junk collectors come (the come 3-5 AM) and not stopped till the left biggrin.png

Else a great dog, who never cared if he is alone.

Yeah, my soi dog never needed any toilet training either. She sleeps inside and has never had an accident.

I wasn't really planning on adopting her (she was an adult dog when I got her), but she started showing up at my gate and one of my other dogs fell in love with her. I figured I might as well let them be a couple and live happily ever after (that does happen in the dog world). So I just grabbed her and took her straight to the vet, had her neutered and vaccinated/dewormed/etc. and then brought her home. She's been with me for three years and is the most grateful dog I've ever met.

My other two dogs are brats who have no idea of how lucky they are.

  13. There will be more costs. You also have vet fees in UK and quarantine fees.

Great to hear of great people doing great things smile.png

There is NO quarantine in the UK anymore as long as you do all your papers before leaving Thailand. Those are the papers that cost 15000 baht. There's no fee to enter any country in Europe with your dogs, so there should be no cost whatsoever once you get to the UK.

EU and UK rules are not the same, have a look here https://www.gov.uk/pet-travel-quarantine

I know to bring dog into Thailand is around US$2000(large size sent with cargo), so i do not see taking one back would be much cheaper

The UK rules changed in 2013 and now are the same as the rest of Europe. The only two countries that still have quarantine for dogs coming from Thailand (even with all the paperwork) in the European continent are Norway and Sweden. There's no quarantine anymore in the UK IF you have the correct paperwork. If you don't, then your dog goes into quarantine. I run a small dog rescue group in Hua Hin and we've sent several dogs to the UK (and many to Germany and Netherlands). One left for England just last week.

If you mean $2000 for the flight, then that depends on the airline, whether you do things yourself or use a pet shipping service, etc. The dog that went to England last week flew with the new owner through Air France. She paid 300 Euros to fly the dog. No other costs (well, the 15000 for the blood test).

around $2000 total including vaccinations, import/export license, agent fees and flight but as cargo not excess luggage.

i know to Germany is pretty easy as many adoptions go to Germany, but not UK

If it is indeed so easy and cheap now, may i suggest you make a thread and let people know or may be even a bigger campaign, hate reading classifieds wherE Brits looking to give away their animal, because returning back to UK

    Sorry to go off topic.

Great idea, I'll do that tomorrow. I think many people from the UK might not be aware that the rules changed recently. Plus, you'd be surprised how many people don't want to pay 15000 baht for the test or don't bother to start the process early -- and then can't wait the necessary four months to get the dog/cat home.

From the $2000 you quoted, I think most would go to agent fees. Since we're a rescue group, we don't charge people anything. We just tell them where to go, what papers to get (export certificate from the airport/customs office is 150 baht), etc. We just want the dogs to have a good life.

Between blood test, flight, etc. I think you're looking at around 800-1000 US dollars to take an animal from Thailand. But there are really no hidden costs and no extra expenses once you board the plane.

and the 90 day wait and blood tests is not quarantine?

This is done here in Thailand, before you leave. The dog stays in your home, not in a quarantine center, so there's no cost You just need to wait 90 days after the blood test results to fly to Europe.

  17. Please can you keep me updated on your process and costs, I am looking to rescue a dog and take home if I can afford it so would be interested, would like to fly him/her back with me

It takes four months to get a dog ready to enter Europe (including the UK). That's one month for the blood test and 90 days you have to wait after the test before he's allowed to fly there. There's no way around that. If you're planning on taking a dog, start early!

  18. Feed them treats. No dry dog food, but yummy food treats from the pet store. They're very cheap and the dogs will love you.

If they're females (probably not; it's the males that tend to be more aggressive and protective of their area), get them spayed. I've paid for the spaying of four soi dogs around my house. No more puppies and the dogs are now friendly and healthy. Good Karma too.

  19. give me break.

Must admit ... a bit OTT even for me.

BTW ... the Farm Dogs, the 3 of them are not allowed in the house due to the number of ticks they carry.

The one exemption is for GrandPa and Matriarch of the Farm is is scared s***less of Fireworks and gunshots, but surprisingly quite OK with the big storms and the thunder doesn't bother him. He pops his head in for a bit of reassurance come New Years Eve etc.

Ticks can kill a dog. There's a 20 baht pill you can give them every month to get rid of the ticks.

  20. If he's only going to be here for three months, he will have no visa run expenses. Just 1900 for the 30-day extension at immigration. No need to pay for health insurance either for a three-month stay. I've been here much longer than that and I don't have insurance. Sure, it's a risk, but if he's on a tight budget, I'd say skip it.

That said, I'm not sure 10,000 is doable. Or if it is, it will be a very boring three months.
