  1. Hehe, here's another BKK Taxi Driver:

That's Bt3,000 for the ride, sir, now get out

    Published on Dec 18, 2003

A taxi driver was arrested yesterday after a foreign passenger told police he had been charged Bt3,000 for a ride into town but had then been ejected from the taxi while still at the airport.

Taxi driver Panya sae-Lim, 43, was arrested in his blue and red taxi at Bangkok airport's international terminal 1 after his Sri Lankan passenger, Dayaguna Chaminda, told police Panya had picked him up then told him to get out at the cargo terminal.

Panya allegedly cited traffic congestion for not wanting to drive into town.

He was looking for a new passenger when he was arrested, police said. Lt-Colonel Warat Worapratyakun, who arrested Panya, said the driver had been charged with driving to the airport without a passenger and without a permit. Warat said Panya would lose his driver's licence and face a fine of up to Bt300.

Panya pleaded guilty to the charge and said he made five to six journeys to the airport daily.

Despite his ordeal, Chaminda said he had been to Thailand several times, was happy to be visiting again and that he enjoyed Thai people's hospitality. He said he did not want to pursue the case.

Panya returned the money and apologised for his actions.

  2. Yes and no. Thanks for bringing this up. This forum is in no way affiliated with anything Government.

We have been in contact with them, asking for advice how to handle for example political issues on this forum and asked for advice regarding if we can discuss or not. Should we censure or monitor harder? We have been told to be "reasonable" and "sensible", which I believe we are here.

We have also been told that several high ranking officials are reading this forum as a good source of input for their govt. work with farang related issues, immigration, labour, law etc.

The moderators of this forum are continiously monitoring this forum, and are also deleting or moving inappropriate postings.

Please read our TOS, Terms Of Service and Forum Rules, which also applies to similar web sites in Thailand.

For your information, this web site and forum is NOT hosted in the Kingdom of Thailand, so it cannot be easily cut off.

If they want to stop this website they are in a bit of trouble, becuase it can be surfed by open proxies free of charge to anyone.

We have not heard anything that should motivate us to be more "netiquette" than we are here. The moderators would like to you thank all users for your support!

My wish, as a moderator, is that we use more sensible language when we speak about government officials or about politics when we are critical.

Sometimes we get criticism from forum members here when we delete or move posts. We take that criticism rather than being notified by the "government".

It's free speech a la Thailand! Please respect that!

  3. Where can I find a new IT visa?

It was reported that the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology wants top IT workers in Phuket and will encourage them by granting them a visa in one day. I am an IT expert. I have worked for the German stock exchange, the Bank of Germany and Commerzbank as an IT project manager.

I am now in Phuket – and free to stay for a long time to help the island become an IT province. Last week I went looking for an application form for the new one-year IT visa and the friendly officer told me that I could only get this form at Immigration in Bangkok. Perhaps if Phuket is to be an IT province, it should also have those forms?

Meanwhile my visa expires on September 14 and I can only extend it for a maximum of 15 days. What can I do?

    Uwe Baumann, IT Expert Phuket

    (Phuket Gazette)

    Answer:

“Phuket Immigration does not have the form for the IT expert visa yet. You will have to get the form from Bangkok Immigration. You should contact the personnel department of the organization you are planning to work for, and ask them to write letters confirming your status.

The Bangkok address is: Soi Suan Plu, South Sathorn Road, Bangkok 10120 Thailand. Tel: 02-2873101-10. Office hours: Mon-Fri 9 am-noon, 1 pm -4:30 pm. Saturday 9 am-noon.

There’s also a one-stop service for visas and work permits on Ratchadapisek Road, Bangkok. Tel: 02-6939333-8 ”

  4. Retirees importing personal belongings

My wife and I have non-resident retiree O-A multiple-entry visas. We entered Thailand in June and are looking to build or buy property for our retirement.

Our moving company told us that our used furniture and personal effects, which are being stored in a shipping container, should enter Thailand within six months of our arrival to avoid customs duty.

We are concerned because we have not yet found a suitable property and will be leaving Thailand for about a month in October.

Does the six-month period begin from when we intially entered Thailand? If a person leaves the country, can it begin when that person returns?

    Larry Lawson, Phuket

    Answer:

“The period of six months starts from the date that you initially entered Thailand on the retirement O-A visa, regardless whether you leave and re-enter Thailand after that date.

However, the deadline is somewhat flexible. If your personal items are due to arrive in Thailand more than six months after the entry date, you should inform Customs about this at least two months before the six-month deadline.

If, after entering Thailand, you have been granted a permit to stay for a year or more, your belongings will not be taxed. However, if your permit to stay is for less than one year, these items will be taxed 20% import duty plus 7% value-added tax.

If your belongings arrive while you are away, you can have them stored at the deep sea port, where I presume they will arrive. If you leave your items at the port longer than two months, you should inform Customs so we know that you will collect them later. ”

  7. For one year we have operated Thaivisda.com under the quiet terms of a contributionware site. It continues to be our goal to raise the quality of material available on Thaivisa.com and to remain an independent site that serves the community. It has been by the generosity of our sponsor members we have not only been able to do that, but have become known net wide as an authoritative source on everything Thailand.

As with any top site that achieves the success on the order that we have, expenses also grow. Dozens of gigabytes of bandwidth per day, multiple servers, legal and business expenses have all grown dramatically in the last year to account for our (just plain) awesome growth.

Our administrators works in shifts online 24/7 without salaries or renumeration.

We are now experimenting with different advertising models, and it's not perfect yet. The page loading speed is currently an issue, and I am working on that now.

We could scrap ads completely if someone comes up with an idea that can generate income to cover the cost. Member donations?

  8. "In a related action, the Immigration Bureau has approved a new regulation governing the requirements for qualifying for extensions of visas. However, at present it is planned to implement this regulation in July 2004. "

Does anyone know what this regulation states? I have seen no discussion of this in any forum, yet it may be more important than increase in fees.

The money requirement for a year extension besed on marriage to Thai citizen will be raised from 200,000 Baht to 400,000 Baht from July, 2004.

*Unconfirmed* info speaks about raising the money requirement for a one year extension based on retirement from 800,000 Baht to 1,500,000 Baht.
