  1. What happened to the hostel Simon?

Have you re-branded or moved on?

    (posting from my simon43 nick)

Mkawish - the room rates are only 1 click away - easy to find in a few seconds if you need accommodation.

Also, just like my other hotel, I do not use booking agents in Thailand. I do not need to use them when I can fill my rooms 100% using direct marketing strategies and use of international booking agents.

The best way to fill the rooms is the method with the lowest premium to pay (ie commission). That would be via on-line bookings on my web-site

    Simon

  2. How much can you get for an oilpalm bunch?

A motorcycle sidecar full doesn't seem worth killing 2 people for unless it is mightyy expensive .....

I'm with you CH, completely senseless, I mean how much time would they have gotten anyway if caught........

They are obviously very poor, so they would have got quite a lot of time if caught.

You mean because they are poor they wouldn't be able to buy themselves out of trouble or you think poor people get longer sentences?

But that still means they are only looking at the statutory sentence.

A lot less time than they are now looking at presumably ............

I would still like to know how much palmoil bunches go for, if anyone knows.

  3. I drove from Phuket to Krabi last Tuesday during heavy rain.

There is a short cut that avoids Ao Leuk and Tha Phut and this road was under a lot of water when I went through.

There were at least two hours more heavy rain after this, so there might be serious damage to this road.

I would definitely advise you to avoid this short cut and stay on Highway 4 which I would think will be ok.

I took the shortcut last sunday "Charliharper", and everything is ok ;)

    Good to know "aonangman" ;)

  5. To a point, it depends what you mean by decent.

If you are talking about the top international schools in Phuket then I am sure you are going to be disappointed.

If you are talking about thai government schools I don't know if they are any better or worse in Krabi than in Phuket.

Like you I have heard nothing good about schools in Krabi personally but there are a couple of recommendations here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/413084-krabi-schools/

IMHO, I would be looking at moving my kids away from Krabi for their education, not to Krabi as it is at the moment.

  6. Usually the electricity and water bills are kept in the landlord's name.

As TaninThai said, this often leads to the landlord adding a surcharge.

This is a common practice in Thailand so not worth giving up your house for as the next landlord is likely to do the same.

Just make sure you know how much you will be paying before you sign the contract.

I am currently looking for a small place to rent in Phuket and have been quoted 5-7 baht for electricity and 100 - 150 baht for water, per month.

At these rates I would expect to pay 1,000 - 1,500 baht per month for electricity in a one bedroom apartment with one air con unit used every night.

The real water bill would probably be 25 - 50 baht per month.

  7. Next to the corn flakes .........

If they are the small pieces of polystyrene type stuff that you put into packages to protect the contents, then I would look in stationery shops.

There is a good one very near to the night market in Krabi Town and also a good one on the same side as the mosque in Klong Haeng (just outside Ao Nang) going towards the sea.

  8. I am no expert on this, but what I can see are this:

If seeking employment then you are probably looking in the wrong place dependng on your particular work skills. The only employed farangs I know are teachers, English teachers and dive instructors. Oh, and swimming pool consultant.

Own businesses are the usual suspects: restaurant, bar, guest house/hotel (hostel!), dive shop, travel agency. A few farang real estate err...... enterprises - best way to put it!

I am not sure if any of them have struck it rich, but some of the early bird business owners may do IF they own the real estate and IF they can sell it.

Some of the business owners do have a comfortable lifestyle, but some do not.

As others have said, tread carefully if you are going down this route but the sponsor of this forum might be someone useful to ask as his business is growing.

    Hope this helps.

  9. Fair enough but it might be faster to have him buy one in the UK and mail it to you

I will do that if necessary, it isn't desperately urgent.

Just don't want to get stung with some huge duty fee.

  10. >The 3G version of Kindle works everywhere Kindle is supported. I don't know the exact list but people report that it works in Thailand as well.

Anyone care to verify this from experience? Is it fast and simple enough?

I can verify this. It is fast and simple enough.

One of the best additions to travel and/or life in Thailand.

  11. Why would you want to buy one in Thailand?

Errrr ........ because I want to use it in Thailand ........:jap:

I already have one in UK, but a friend wants to watch Thai TV in UK

  12. What is a non-italian style pizza?

    The Pizza Co. thick crust

    OK, got it.

Thick crust also available in Italy.

    Doubt Pizza Co is though.

Went there last month and I chose the thin crust - thin crust being my preference.

    Absolutely disgusting.

My beautiful dining companion chose the thick crust.

    Well tasty.

So, maybe in a nutshell we have: Pizza Co good for 'non-italian style' pizza (which means thick crust I have learnt this evening), bad for Italian style pizza (which I assume means thin crust).

    Fair summary?

  13. Has anyone tried to arrange a car share?

Someone rents, or provides a car, and share the costs/driving with two or three others.

    Just an idea.

Could be complicated. If one person needs to visit the consulate and the other two just want aborder crossing.

A true lesson for all who needed it in stating the bleeding obvious.

  14. Pizza company is typical American crap !

Agree. Since when does pizza come with little hot dogs on it? dry.gif

I like La Panza and La Frenza both in Krabi Town near Chao Fa Pier. Both serve more authentic Italian style pizza.

    Italian style pizza is shyt.:bah:

  16. The OP's question is a good one. It caught my eye immediately. There are so many people in differing circumstances though, that it ispossible to answer for all. I know many retirees that are finding it increasingly difficult to survive on just their pension. Some still have income from a property back home, and they tend to be better off, and also still have the option to return home. Then there are those trying to survive on a low income from teaching, for example, who cannot afford the same lifestyle they might have had a few years ago. And then there are those that have relatively high incomes, who can still enjoy a very good lifestyle, compared with what they could expect back in Europe. I have always been of the opinion that one should be careful with ones money, and save for a 'rainy day', so I put all my coins in a bottle, and live a fairly modest lifestyle..! One thing is for sure, the cost of living has gone up considerably since I moved here 20 years ago, and if you don't have some source of income, you will not live very well for long. For those people that 'sold up' everything, and moved to Thailand permanently, they will find it difficult to return to their home country, I would imagine..? One thing is for sure, nobody knows what lies ahead, so the best thing is to plan ahead, and live a modest and sensible life while you can. :jap:

I dont see how you can say the cost of living has gone up considerably over the past 20 years. I dont see it. Yes, the past 1-2 years there has been some big increases but I contribute this to the cost of fuel increase. 20 years ago i think the cost of living was the same if not more expensive, the exchange rate was down around 25B to the USD cost of khow pad was about 15-20B per plate, so yes the cost has gone up to 30B but with inflation and exchange rate i think we are about the same if not lower. it appears you are working as a teacher, Im sure you are getting paid more now than 20 years ago. I have seen the prices of several things come down, i would think this has to due with cheap imports from China and the expansion of industry in Thailand, with Thailand producing more and more goods here for both domestic and exports. Can you give me some examples of things that are considerably increased in the past 20 years but keeping in mind the exchange rate differences. (I agree that things are more expensive now due to exchange rate changes than what they were 10 years ago, when exchange rates were 40-45-50 to the USD) but comparing to 20 years dont agree.

Khow pad going up from 20B to 30B is a 50% increase.

Other things that have gone up are beer, hotels, gasoline, labour, property, land, commodities ......

    We call this inflation.

Everything is clearly more expensive than 20 years ago.

Exchange rate fluctuations may make this greater or smaller depending on currency.

  17. Burp...

Paid a visit to Yunee's. Food seemed about like I remember from when it was Charlie's. Good. She is the same cook, and appears to be using the same dory fillets. I thought the chips were tasty.

Maybe not the place to go if you are in a hurry. She takes her time.

    IMAG0037.jpg

Take away the slice of lemon and that could be a good Greasy Spoon in the UK with that table cloth, vinegar and ketchup in the picture.

Does she also do an All Day Full English? (My mate says if it doesn't include 'All Day' in the description it isn't right !!)

    Looks very tempting.

  18. I don't live in Chiang Mai but the TV is easy.

As already mentioned get the satellite TV service through UBC/True Vision. I have the gold package at 1,568.12 B/month. Includes movies, docs, sports AND CNBC, Bloomberg, CNN and BBC World. I don't know but would presume these channels come with all packages.

    Can find out more here:

    http://www.truevisionstv.com

Assuming you are aiming to live in central Chiang Mai, internet will be no problem also. Can't help with costs or providers but those already mentioned are nationwide as is ToT.

  19. I am having a couple of teak doors put in in a few days.

My main concern is to try and protect them from rain. I would also like to preserve the natural look of the wood if possible

Does anybody have any suggestions/recommendations on a product/brand and colour to treat them with?
