  1. Read what I said. Ya-Ba is not physically addictive. It is only addictive in the sense that people like it and want to do more. A heroin addict goes through withdrawal symptoms and becomes very ill if they stop taking it. A speed freak does not.

Ulysses is absolutely correct. Read each and every word in his statement I am quoting. He doesn't say it's not addictive, he says it's not physically addictive. It's basically not. Look it up. This doesn't mean one wouldn't have physical symptoms when stopping, but the addiction process that happens with heroin, cocaine and tobacco is NOT present with meth abuse. Therefore adding heroin to yaba would add an additional and very different addictive component.

If the intent was to encourage addiction, would it not be better to lace it with something more addictive - such a Crack Cocaine? Or is it just meant as a means to reduce the down of the yaba??? Innocent questions - I know very little of the illicit drugs trade.

Heroin is arguably more addictive than cocaine (crack or otherwise), much cheaper than cocaine and I would think be far more readily available in Southeast Asia than cocaine.

  3. I recall that a Thai was beat to death for smashing a figure at the Erawan Shrine, Bangkok.

I hear ya, mate. But the Russian smashed an abbot figure, the guy at Erawan smashed The Figure, the main part of the shrine. I'm not sure these are equal in stature. BTW, not condoning the Thai guy getting beaten to death. Just suggesting smashing an abbot figure isn't the same as basically destroying the whole shrine.

  4. Re--#1

So a 2 wheel drive car does not get charged a " maintenance fee " " but a 4 X4 DOES --they can be about the same size ??

and is the other 500B "towing fee" on top of the basic 500b fine---??

What was posted indicates the fines are based on the number of wheels, not how many wheels are powered.

This did make me think though.... If they use that tow truck without a dolly on a 4-wheel drive car or truck, it's gonna screw it up good and proper.

But I'm sure the BiB know this and will take the proper measures. whistling.gif

  5. What a load of dross. I went to Phuket in 1991, and the sex shows were alive and well there then. Now, there are even more. Phuket is a steaming turd in the Andaman, and anyone that has spent anytime there knows that Patong is no different than Pattaya. It's a shame, as there are some nice spots there, but most of the comments by the authorities are just usual BS.

So which is it, a "steaming turd" or a place with "some nice places"?

Like many, you confuse Patong, one over built, seedy, smelly beach town with all of Phuket, an island the size of Singapore. Bang Tao, Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Surin, Kamala, Karon, Kata, Kata Noi, Ya Nui, Nai Harn, make up 90% of the west coast and are all nice beaches which cannot accurately be described as part of your "steaming turd". And lets not forget about all the other areas of Phuket that are not Patong such as Rawai, Chalong, Kathu, Phuket Town, Chang Talay, and Thalang. In addition Cape Panwa, Cape Promtheap, Khao Pra Teaw Wildlife Reserve and Sirinat National Marine Park are lovely places and rarely visited by tourists.

    Like * 1,000, Joe.

  6. Liar, liar, pants on fire. I was at Patong a few days ago. The other night I saw no less that SIX slow loris'. SIX. I lived in Thailand for 11 years and before, I don't think I have ever seen more than one. "Problem solved" Thai style!

Just like the governments promise that there would be no more flooding in Bangkok and the very next day I'm walking through a foot of water to get home.

  7. I think we're all missing the point here. Going to places full of alpha males who have a high probability of being intoxicated is a high risk scenario. Ego's are high and reasoning is low.

Why would an "alpha male" be looking to pay for sex with a prostitute in a low grade bar in a third world country?

Spicy is not a "low grade" bar. Thailand is not a "third world" country. If you really want to know though, I'm sure you can find plenty of alpha males looking to pay for sex with a prostitute whom you could ask. smile.png

  8. WOW....gives you great insight into how the minds of BiB work...a simple commerical dispute and firearms are pulled and these people are suppose to serve and protect a population, this incident should be enough for BiB concerned to be kicked out of the police force

Not sure BiB is strictly correct heresmile.png

Bimbo in Brown...? or could be B*tch in Brown....take your pick...biggrin.png

Babe in Brown. Bird in Brown. We could go on....

  9. Winnie you have posted some good posts re this topic. Most readers see the headline and their judgement is totally clouded.

I have never seen a thread explode like this. I think we have a lot of nervous posters who think their hip pocket my be dented when this impact will be very small There have been 5 new post since I have started typing

I basically agree with your point, Koo, except in this case, the headline is just dead-nuts wrong. Not just misleading. Just plain wrong.

    Who wrote the headline?

  10. OMG - 8 pages of whining for a small price hike.

The excise for imported whiskey is 360 thb/l today. Tomorrow it will be 400 thb/l.

Please note that the news article says excise will be increased TO 400 thb/l, not BY 400 thb/l.

I missed that. I bet I'm not the only one! Good catch, mate.

    The article's headline is incorrect...

  11. Good say, you right i live 4 year here never had problems, i am from Belgium i think it is more safe here

Sadly, your perception is incorrect. A person is 4x as likely to be murdered in Thailand (per 100,000 populations) as in Belgium:

    Source, the UN. http://www.unodc.org...es-05012009.pdf

    Belgium: 1.6- 2.1 intentional homicides per 100,000. Thailand: 8.2- 9.0.

A person in Thailand is also probably several times more likely to be killed in traffic (per 100 million vehicle miles driven) than in Europe. I haven't looked that one up for Europe, but my recollection is that the factor for the USA is 12x more likely to be killed in traffic in Thailand.

This might be the best reply I have ever seen on ThaiVisa.Com. clap2.gif

  12. But that happens almost every year. Ratchadaphisek floods, the mouth of the lower Sois Sukhumvit flood, but they are quick receding (usually within a couple hours of the rain stopping).

The only difference is that it wasn't raining when this happened.

I guess this shows an increased flow in the sewage system under the roads.

    OH! I stand corrected, sir.

Then what you are seeing is exactly what I was talking about--something never seen beofre. Water coming out of the sewers there without a rainfall within an hour or two?! Wow.

  13. Earlier today there was water coming up out of the drains on Sukhumvit Soi 23 by the Jasmine and 7/11 but it stopped after a while.

But that happens almost every year. Ratchadaphisek floods, the mouth of the lower Sois Sukhumvit flood, but they are quick receding (usually within a couple hours of the rain stopping).

I think we're in for something different, but again, no one seems to know what parts of central Bangkok SPECIFICALLY will flood.

I've lived here 9 years and the water that is coming down from the North has never come down like this before. I really don't think any of our past experiences are going to help predict what's going to happen.

BTW, if you don't like Pattaya, I'm in Phuket for the next couple days and there are no floods here... :whistling:

  14. I live on the "u" in Pathum Thani on that map just down & across the highway from Dreamworld. Still dry here somehow. The Dreamworld side of the canal isn't though afaik.

Ar you saying that Dreamworld has been flooded? sad.gif I had plans on going there on sunday.

I think you probably ought to change your plans. In fact, no one should probably make plans to go to Pathum until this has passed. The flooding around Future Park makes for insane travel through there. As in, it took me 1 hour to get from Zeer Rangsit to Future Park.

  15. Are there any users actually in Bankgok? I keep hearing about the disaster happening but never see pictures. Pictures please.

I was there a couple days ago but had a scheduled trip to Phuket. I'll be back Sunday.

I have some pictures but nothing too dramatic. Here's a link to a friends facebook album with some he took up in Pathum Thani. I don't know his security settings and whether you can see them or not, but you can try.

  16. There's no victory in suffering, there can only be less future suffering by holding incompetent officials accountable.

And this is the forum where said officials will be held accountable?

    :cheesy:

    I can't work this out--is that a straw-man argument or just a joke? ;)

The joke was your initial reply.

Oh it just keeps getting better! You gave three straw-man arguments in terms of answering the original question. Or maybe you really believe that post is going to accomplish those things?

Your points are spot on, mate, I'm not disputing that. But the original question was "Can you please enlighten me, what you expect to gain by posts like this one?" Do you really think that post has any chance of gaining those things? On a silly forum for foreigners?! Seriously?!

I stand by DocN and my original sentiment that it's totally a "I told you so" deal.

I'll let you have the last word if you care to have it, but I don't think this is all that constructive and I'm ready to let it drop...
