No problems at all for me with my AIS POSTPAY SIM in the UK since mid-April. I don't subscribe to any roaming packages while in the UK but simply keep the SIM in the phone as second SIM for receiving any OTPs from Kbank. Their mobile App is good and no reason not to use it though IMO.

Earlier this year while in Thailand, the SIM went dead with no notice. No service. Took it to AIS and they told me it was an "old" SIM (only from Aug 2020) and they replaced it immediately at no charge. Advise you get a new SIM once back in Thailand.

Thanks for the message mine has been working same as yours until recently but will think over getting a new SIM too.   Have emailed AIS so hope they can shed some more light on the problem.

  2. I am with Kasikorn Bank (KBank) and have been for many years but I refuse to use their K-Biz mobile app but they insist on me using SMS Text OTP codes to authorise payments for even tiny amounts e.g. 20 THB top-ups. In the past this hasn't been a problem as my Thai SIM has worked both in Thailand and UK until recently when I've discovered I only get a signal for a short time then it cuts out.  Not 100% sure I know why but I've noticed AIS are now trying to sell roaming packages for DATA and also Voice & SMS calls !?  Previously this was free though you paid extra charges for SMS and Voice calls but now it seems they're trying to screw more out of people who travel abroad.  Anyone else had the same problem?

Many thanks! so was the company above?? the one you mentioned for 1200 pounds six months cover duration and 10 million limit with only 150 deductible??

Have you actually made any claims ?did you pay first or paid directly to hospital by insurer?

Thanks! info appreciated plenty to work with.

Yes it was Justtravel.com I used with the cover mentioned but you may have to use state hospitals rather than private but many hospitals offer both.  At least I was covered regardless which is the key thing.  Never made any claims yet but check insurers reviews beforehand to establish track record. Details of payment terms are in policy wording.

Returning to the Uk soon and will be looking for a policy to cover coming back for visits months at a time. Roughly the same age with diabetes etc , your policy sounds ideal with 10 million cover and such a low 150 excess, could you reveal the company details policy name etc.

    Many thanks

For travel insurance which covers pre-existing conditions I have used several companies over the years and have to approach them for a new quote each time as they all seem reluctant to store personal medical information unfortunately.   I've listed below the companies I've used who offer cover for pre-existing although it may come with 'strings' attached which you need to read the policy documents for carefully.

JustTravelcover.com used recently was a single trip quote with a level of cover called "Unity Travel AIG Single Bronze" and by excluding the Cancellation & Baggage cover you can reduce the costs significantly which is what I did.

Before them I've used the following ALL Single Trip policies :-

Insureandgo               Backpacker Bronze used for 3 years but age limit kicked in (they may have increased this of course)

Holidaysafe                HS Backpacker & Longstay Platinum used 3 times

Coverforyou.com        Silver level used 2 times

Freedom Insurance     Travel Single Trip Scheme used 8 times but then was age limited (I believe)

That should give you a head start on your search for a travel insurance quote for up to 6 months anyway.

  5. Have been going through a similar situation trying to find insurers willing to quote for health insurance to people with pre-existing conditions. I'm slightly younger than you but have had two heart attacks and recently had diabetes diagnosed.  Currently I get around the health issues by spending 6 months out of the country in the UK on NHS cover and then get 6 months travel insurance (including cover for above) costing £1,200 with £10 million cover and £150 excess.  The only company I've found that say they would consider me if I had a medical first has been Pacific Cross but no figures or conditions discussed yet.  All the others would exclude my pre-existing which would make insurance from them pointless.  Good luck with your search and keep us informed how you get on please.

  6. Just a thought, but as you are in an 'at-risk' group it might be worth investing in a water misting system on the exterior doorways and windows you open on a regular basis. Have heard they not only cool the air but trap the particulates as well before they can get inside via those routes anyway.

  7. Thais are programmed to accept noise as an every day occurrence.  As soon as they are born their parents stick them in a cot under the family TV playing at full blast.  Their brains are then scrambled by the dross they call entertainment with dopey presenters and cartoon sound effects (and that is for the adults) the kids get hours of Chinese movies with the same story told a thousand ways.

Later in life they cannot sleep or feel comfortable unless a radio, TV or Karaoke is blaring in the corner of the room at home or every public establishment they visit.   Unless the authorities take the problem seriously there will be many deaths in similar circumstances.

  8. Many years ago I setup my own Kasikorn Bank account because they have a good online system and are English language friendly (in most cases).  One of the options available to KBank account holders is a facility known as a 'K Online Debit Card' which gives you a card number which you can use to pay for online purchases from Lazada etc.  You get no physical card for your wallet just the number to use.  I seldom use it as I prefer to pay 'cash on delivery' usually but it can be useful if the supplier does not do COD.  I presume most of the other Thai banks offer a similar facility so may be worth investigating as an alternative to Paypal perhaps?

  9. The story I heard was that a passenger was killed by a heavy bag falling onto his/her head from a compartment and subsequently airlines have reduced the cabin baggage allowance from 10kg to 7kg but as you say once people are through security most just chuck everything back into the cabin bag which kind of defeats the purpose of the regulation.

  10. Question.    Some of the supporting documents I have like my Thai Marriage Certificate and BKK Condo Deeds are written it Thai (obviously) but in the guidance webpage located here  it states Documents in foreign languages must be translated into English and the translation must be certified  by the relevant embassy in London am I OK to send documents written in Thai or should I send translations please?

  11. Can anyone who has used the E-Visa application system in the UK tell me if there is anywhere within it which allows the applicant to send a message to the immigration person who is dealing with the application ?

Just I want to apply for a 3 months Non Imm (Marriage) visa but will be staying for 6 months as I plan to extend once I get there.  I'm concerned that when they see from my return flight date and number of days quoted is longer than 3 months visa applied for they will reject the application without recourse and I lose £60 in the process.  So need somewhere to explain that is what my intention is.     Anyone else tried this already ?

  12. We do this drive regularly and use Soda Resort, Kamphaeng Phet as our overnight resting spot most times.  Well run clean and spacious rooms and nice and quiet so a good sleep and was 450 THB for room per night including breakfast.  Mostly Thais staying there and gardens kept immaculate.

  13. My wife says it's a term of endearment when Thais call us farang but I don't think so.  It is a lazy way of pointing out the obvious which is you are a foreigner and I find its use discourteous sometimes.   In the UK we wouldn't usually use such generalisations like foreigner or worse alien when referring to someone within earshot preferring instead the more polite 'lady' or 'gentleman' but things are starting to get confusing over here nowadays with the various gender misfits who we are all supposed to be conscious of and not offend.  It won't be long until everyone is called 'Ms'.
