  1. Its comical the way the amateur journalists always do a much, much better job getting actual useless footage. Probably because they are clueless and fearlessly wandering into the wrong places. That clip and the clip from Rajdomeon Ave, are the two best I have seen.

The CNN people are always huddled behind something safe :)

  2. Guys,

I think that is what we could very well see. The Thai government really puts it to these guys to give up Thaksin or face the hangman. They testify that he was behind it all. The government also has financial transactions. They go after those people. Same deal. They put it all on Thaksin. They dissolve the Peau Thai Party. Then they make it known that any future "Red Shirt Leaders" who claim to be willing to die better be prepared to actually do so.

Then, perhaps, with the help of the US/UK, they are able to extradite Thaksin from one of these nations (This will probably be harder as long as the international press keeps backing him up) and that is the end of the Thaksin era.

  3. I have no experience with regards to employment in Thailand but if one company is hiring the best person around and the other is hiring their cousin, the laws of survival of the fittest will come into play. The latter might work in the entertainment biz (although you are still making less money because you are producing a substandard product) when you have a total monopoly but how could it possibly work in engineering, especially considering how much work is done behind the scenes (not in view of the customer)?

  4. It's quite possible that these guys really didn't know what Thaksin had planned all along. He could have told them to make the fire speeches without informing them that this was his actual intention. They wanted to cut the deal remember? Probably saw their freedom and nice salary dangling in front of them when he pulled the rug out. At least that is what Sae Daeng claimed.

  5. The funny thing is, I think Thaksin actually had a decent chance of winning if he would have avoided violence and simply took his time propagandizing different provinces of Thailand. I guess he never considered the option of actually maintaining a majority of seats like TRT did previously. It couldn't have been all that hard, look at how much time and money they spent on these protests, they could have spent that on campaigning. He is now following a Mao doctrine and I don't think it will work. The US gov was previously on the fence, now they will be doing more to help the Thai government in apprehending him. He is really going to have to be careful with his travel. As if Thailand can't buy off the Montenegro government?

Amazingly though, the foreign press continues to view him in a more positive light than the Thai government. So who knows.

  6. The Issan folk are survivers and some good education would enhance their huge potential

    No it wouldn't.

I educate Isaan folk (at least 70% from rural farm families), and watch them to go on and get Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees. They are still ostracized from the well-paying jobs in Bangkok and elsewhere in Central Thailand because of the color of their skin and lack of "pedigree." One of my good Isaan friends, a high-achieving graduate from Chulalongkorn Uni. cannot advance much beyond his entry level job in his field due to the social stigma of being from Isaan (and looking like it, too). He is surrounded by hi-so Thai-Chinese co-workers who all seem to be on a strange professional slippery slide which advances them only in the upward direction.

Such is the nature of a hierarchical society which has inherited its genes and world-and-life outlook from thousands of years of a peasant/feudal lord society structure.

An earlier post chided the Thai farmer for not banding into cooperatives to fight against the millers and middle-men who exploit them. They've tried and end up in an early grave. Hit-men hired by moneyed middle-men are alive and well in Thailand's northeast, and many others sponsored by Central Thai middle-men. No one dares stand up to them for fear of their lives and family's lives. Such is the currently still thriving feudal system in Thailand.

The social barriers are still too high to climb, even with advanced education or falling into new money (farang spouse, for example). Yes, they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Hence, the source of much of the anger you are seeing lately. No it doesn't excuse the violence, but it does add perspective to it.

Your "education-cures-all-woes" western pipe-dream doesn't fly here. Sorry.

Why not build their own establishments and hire only Isaanites? They can even do it in Bangkok.

7/11 Lang Suan... not gone up in smoke, but looted beyond recognition, as many, many other shops all over.

yeah, but come on be reasonable...they did it peacefully!!

I remember seeing Nattawut/Jutaporn? on video calling for more reds to join the 'peaceful protest' and adding that they need not bring petrol as they had more than enough to burn Bangkok to the ground 'peacefully'.

But maybe it was a 'fake' red leader on a 'fake' video??

Actually Korat City Hall was not subject to any attack last night. I have eye witness testamony.

I wonder how many other "exagerations" are on this list...

You don't know hot to spell exaggerations, nor do you understand quotation marks.

But please point out any mistakes on the list. That is why it was posted.

Can anyone confirm the level of damage to Seacon Square, IT Seer Mall Rangsit, Tesco Rama IV, and Big C Lad Prao?

Also, add QS MRT to the list.

  10. Who underwrites the insurance of Central World? I'd be interested to know in reality who's pocket just took a caning... :)

More than likely they are in the same family. :D

Would be surprised if there is not some government assistance.

what about all those mom & pop stores in Siam Square

So many people's lives and livelihoods have been destroyed, runied or badly damaged today by these disgraceful acts of terror

Real Estate is insured, but as others have mentioned, there are often terrorism clauses in insurance contracts. I believe Siam Square is owned by one family.

I doubt anyone is insured for stock. Did they get the high priced automobiles out of Central World? :D

  11. What a load of BS. All these people are, are terrorists. That word is over used these days, but anyone who would kill, bomb, burn the residents and businesses of a city are clearly a threat.

After its all said and done it seems that the reds will lose the respect they had earned, and the bargaining chips they had are gone.

Nope, they are freedom fighters going to extraordinary lengths to achieve the outcome most of us take for granted.

Is the French Revolution regarded as acts of terrorism? Did anyone call the Greece rioters terrorists? And you haven't seen the last of Europe in flames either, guaranteed.

And it really is none of our f**king business...

Well for some of us it is "our f**king business". By burning down CentralWorld they have also burned down over 1 million baht worth of my stuff in it. That does make it "my business".

what is ur biz if u wanna share?

  12. I think Arisman is going to get the death penalty. The little petrol speech is inescapable. There needs to be something in it for the government to let these guys go. If they can sing... If not... What does their offshore money have to do with it? They aren't buying their way out of a jail sentence, not when they just did 5-10-15 USD billion worth of damage to the country (Lost Tourism)?

I also think its very likely that Mr. Thaksin is going to end up extradited out of one of these countries that he thinks he is welcome in (through back door deals with the Thai/US government). He is going to land somewhere to refill his gas tank on a G5 and get dragged out of the plane head first.
