As this topic is 'Chiang Mai Immigration" specific it should be in the Chiang Mai Forum ?

The concept of standardization of rules as regards Thai Immigration is a leap too far, everything is "my patch" based at officer and location level.

Unfortunately, end of the day (ultimate decision time) this is too true! There is supposed to be 'standardisation' but given that the person in charge at any Consulate or Embassy - or Immigration Office - has been given the ultimate say-so (or not) on our applications, then yes, it will, at least CAN, come down, to a 'My patch..!' scenario, especially if, as I see so many, 'alien-applicants' (us!) go in with a 'No, no! You're NOT going to mess ME around!!' attitude! Having just returned to Thailand from an extended period working in China, I can at least say that here such things are usually relatively straight forward as that 'dispensation' various authorities have there to deal with you as they will can be no less than soul-destroying!!!  :wai:

  2. WHITE or BLUE background? Er.. YES.

Seems to me, going by my last couple of years experiences travelling out and back into Thailand, that at least 2 'pasport size' 6x4cm pics, WHITE background will always be required for the visa itself, whichever country you apply in, and then later when you go to Thai immigration, locally, to extend your stay, those WHITE background pics, any you have left, you will be told are of no use now, and so you will have to go 'next door' to get your pics taken again but with a BLUE background (for 200bt).. Vice versa, of course, any BLUE background ones you have left will be deemed unacceptable next time you need to go elsewhere and start the visa process over again.. Just the way of it, now, it seems. :wai:

Really ... being a gentleman here is synonymous with looser .

Ps.we are same age and young

You can't even spell loser.. yes l.o.s.e.r. - let alone recognise yourself for what you clearly are!! Suppose you think your 'story' makes you sound tough and no-nonsense.. well, guess what... (nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) :wai:

Just send her over some money to help with medical expenses.

I think her dad is getting sick too.

The laws are not very strict on deadbeat fathers and you are about to be one.

Make sure you get to see her place, real fast...

lock up or put away all valuables, in a safe place...

put well hidden covert "nanny cams" in all the rooms of your house, to get footage on what she's upto when you are away...

leave some 100THB notes hanging around..not to obviously visible but accessible enough for her to find and see what happens when you are away...

this could be a good for a start.

Yeah test her. But then again, don't. That's just playing silly games. What would you say.." Ah, I knew it!! I left a 100 baht sticking out from under my pillow, and one just partly under the towel rack, and now they've gone. No excuses love, I've got your number.. now, let's be avving you along!!'???

Not even the point nor the question of the original post, anyway, is it? Personally, I'd think someone who suddenly puts themselves forward to come and stay with you for a week in all likelihood has a much less temporary period in mind! Either the intent is to convince you of how good that would  be for you also, or maybe she could just refuse to leave after the 7 days are up. Could be a genuine 'trip' to come stay a short while with someone she thinks she really likes, of course, but then you won't know that until she's here.. say, after 6 of the 7 days! Just a thought. :wai:

  6. It is safest to have an onward flight booked, otherwise the airline may not allow you to check in. Thai immigration does not actually check. If you look affluent, and speak to the supervisor, the airline will usually allow you to check in if you sign a form indemnifying them against any financial cost they could incur if you are refused entry into Thailand. I have quite frequently traveled to Thailand without a visa, and never been refused boarding, but airlines are becoming more strict. If you are of a nervous disposition, have either a visa or an onward flight reservation.

On my return to Thailand, from the UK (Manchester) this year, just after Christmas, the young woman on the check-in desk suddenly announced I wouldn't be allowed to board the (KLM) flight and so obviously wasn't allowed to check-in, as I had no flight booked OUT of Thailand, and was flying in intending on getting just the standard 30-day visa-exempt stamp. Even though I pointed out that I hadn't arranged a 'proper' Thai visa simply because I would actually be flying out of Thailand again two weeks later to start work in China (and had the China Z visa, from London, in place to show for it!), still I was told I would have to book a ticket and return to check-in again.

I am not usually of anxious disposition, far from it, but pretty flustered at 4am(!!), and not having ever encountered such a scenario previously on my many flights to Thailand, since first coming in 2007, I struggled somewhat to 'calmly' argue my point, before being sent to the KLM Customer Service Desk, where I again began to embark on lengthy discussion/ debate (I wasn't embarking on anything else, it seemed!!.. sorry.) as previous. What I had to accept, however, was that airline policy for certain countries, including Thailand, and something which is determined according to KLM's decreed understanding of actual Immigration policy of the respective country/ ies (they've got a hefty manual for it!!) meant technically I really should not be allowed to fly into Thailand WITHOUT a valid onward or return ticket showing I will be leaving again before the expiration of the permitted 'stay' period, in my case 30 days.

Having looked through my passport and accepting my (now calm as possible, just tired!) reasoning that I'd simply never had a problem before entering Thailand, and regularly flew [back] in, albeit usually with a long-stay visa, tourist or otherwise, MINUS said evidence of future departure, the Customer Service Manager lady decided that I could, after all, be allowed to check-in and so, later, (thankfully) board!! (Phew!!). I was however, still stirred enough to dwell more than I'd wish on what may happen at the Thai end, in Bangkok, if these rules were truly being enforced, and so found a ticket online whilst in Departure (to China, my intended future work destination), the details of which I saved to my phone.. just in case. I couldn't actually even book the ticket, for some online technical reason, but I hoped the details of the flight would suffice if needed. At Bangkok, the tough-looking lady on the desk end of my Immigration queue, simply looked slightly quizically through my 'busy' passport and then actually seemed pretty happy, when I told her 'No.. no visa this time', to just do me the 'honour' of quickly stamping the 30 days therein, just as always I'd always intended/ hoped/ prayed!!..

Sorry to seem so long-winded, but these events did happen, and did catch me totally unawares, and my full realisation, including on a sleepless and very long flight into Thailand, was that I really could have been flatly turned away at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, without any recourse or right of reply. Not a pleasant thought, especially as I was very much looking forward to a brief, relaxing, return to Thailand, before work commitments would take me elsewhere for some time. (.. and yes, I'm posting this from China!) wai.gif

  7. And these were NOT Thais, dear posters, but Norwegians........over a game of darts............

So you don't forget when you start bashing the Thais on other similar incidents.

May the victim Rests in Peace and the killer rots in jail.

    Killer shot himself

Excellent point. So the Norwegian killer, realized he had made an incredible

mistake by shooting his friend, then turns the gun on himself in order to

commit instant justice. A Thai guy would have just done a runner.......So you see Costas, rationalizing can cut both ways... :-)

So.. Norwegians are so 'good' that even when they are bad they instantly realise that their actions are so unforgivable as to enforce instant punishment upon themselves?.. yeah right, 'cos that's how the sort of a guy who shoots his 'friend' thinks, I'm sure!.. mmm... but a Thai, you know, like someone not involved at all in this case.. WOULD HAVE fled if HE HAD BEEN involved.. again, mmm.. pretty sure I'm seeing where your dubious thinking's headed (though still not WHY!!).. and so.. basically, your only input on this, is.. let's see how we can round this story off, about a story of some Norwegian guy going off his head, into another slight at Thais, yeah? Aahh.. gottit!!! thumbsup.gif wai.gif

  8. A new Thai constitution being drafted by the ruling junta is a throwback to an era when a royalist and military elite had a stranglehold on politics, analysts and politicians say, warning of dire consequences for democracy.

To all the junta lovers/ anti election posters here, please read the above twice and reconsider your support to the Thai elite!!

Your are supporting people and a system belonging in a long gone century!!

And cut your "but Yingluck" BS.

    but Yingluck.......................

What democracy are you referring to JOC?

Democracy never existed in Thailand and I very much doubt that it will ever exist.

At least an effort is being made now to bring Thailand to a more civilized world with less corruption and better police force.

Ideals are for the masses, reality and common sense applies more to the right thinking person.

How'd you work that one out? That a military rule instigating more military and elitist rule is an effort 'being made now to bring Thailand to a more civilized world with less corruption and better police force'??? ...

  9. As Buddhism rightly 'preaches'.. all things are impermanent and will not last forever. Yet still bus drivers keep 'testing' their breaks over here without any thought that ONE DAY (no matter even how good they've been right up to that point!!) THEY WILL just pack in!!!!!!! (.. and if it was driver loss of control, rather than brake failure then it's just THEMSELVES they've been testing day in day out!!.. absolutely fine EXCEPT FOR ALL THOSE POOR OTHERS AND THEIR FAMILIES you've taken to their graves/ left grieving!!!).. so sad, and as others have said, needless, in the end.. RIP.. wai.gif

  10. High five's for riverhigh whop whop whop (not sure what his hang up is with 30+ UK guys)

Seriously good for the lads if they did do it on a spare of the moment. They must have had money to get there and they harmed no one (that we are aware of) why bash them for doing something like this?

Some strange people on TV lets bash turn everything into a negative because I'm a grumpy miserable T**T

You current day UK guys are bunch of pussies. If you want spontaneity involving complete lack of thought where "planning" was only considered an academic concept, come to my error back in the mid 70' s - Canada style. Go to a local bar and find yourself a couple of days later 1000 miles away form home with your car in a ditch or sleeping with someone's relative. Remember waking up and lifting the car out of the ditch with my 3 buddies. It was hilarious at the time. Just a minor set back as we continued on our adventure to Northern Canada. Remember meeting new friends on the way and being invited to barbecues. We were young lads in our 20's not like these old UK geezers of 30 plus with passports, credit cards, cell phones just in case of emergency, Lets's say drinking and driving was not strictly enforced. Safe sex, AIDS, ... never heard of it back then. Back in the day we made young Thais look like responsible adults - no easy task!

Yep, riverhigh certainly seems proud of his exploits as a pissed up prat.

No doubt many of us have been in similar exploits - although the ease and convenience of travel was not always the same, nor the size of disposable income. Most of us grow out of it. Looking back some great stupid times, and a few dangerous. But hell, riverhigh is right. Good fun for young men, seems to get more tacky and less laughable the older people doing it get though. 30 somethings, some married with kids ............... not really.

'(UK guys are a bunch of) pussies?'.. Don't even need to get myself (our ourselves) hung up on that one.. your blah blah blah blah blah U.S me-we chest-out macho-ism speaks out for itself, enough said.. enjoy your strut-filled memories Captain America, we salute you!!! clap2.gifwai.gif

  11. I often have traveled on 1/2 day notice. Several of my work contracts have ended quite suddenly. Once I got a phone call Friday night at the mall telling me no need to report Monday. Once on a Thursday I turned around to go back into the lab and my badge no longer worked! Once a dumb looking company security guy came to my desk and said go. OK. I travel light as I work away from home. I give the landlord any remaining notice or rent, or check out of the hotel, put the stuff in the car, and off to the airport. Sometimes I am lucky enough to be near some people I know that let me park my car with them. Other times I just have to go for the long term parking at the airport, or in Seattle found a great deal with the Self Storage place. First month $ 39, second month $1.

'I often.. once I got a.. once (on a Thursday) I.. sometimes I.. other times I...' What's up gk? Feeling left out? .. at least you'll always have your Seattle Self-Storage Deal! (..wasn't that a Nirvana song?)... wai.gif

  12. These guys got taken for everything by a Thai girl, and could not stand to go back home broke and humiliated.

    OR

They love Thailand so much they would rather kill themselves than leave ; )

    NS

Notwithstanding a lot of these guys come for a go at another life or in someway to live a youth they might have missed out on. It must be absolutely devastating when the girl leaves you and all the money is gone too, which is usually the reason for the girl leaving in the first place. Most people I have known of in this situation considered suicide at some stage or another. The goose that lays the golden egg is just a turkey once the egg

is all eaten up, the girl usually goes looking for another goose. Of course there could be many other reasons why this chap took his own life.

Thailand forever or back to Germany, maybe for the reasons you suggested, hey? Go figure! wai.gif

  13. 3-4 a year on same spot, sound suppernaturel, something about that place , like the bridge in scotland or england where the dogs always jump off.

need to be investigated, not by the thai police offcourse

Hardly supernatural is it? (or 'suppernaturel' !).. Seems if you're that way inclined, you do what other such 'tortured souls' did before, and often WHERE they did it!!.. more a mystery - interesting too! - about the dogs and cats, really - have to look that one up! (ps: sorry, but going by the rest of your spelling is your name supposed to be Tony Dandelion?.. just wondered.)... wacko.pngwai.gif

  14. Off you go to the monkey house. Probably not the first time they try to go to the detention center - I hope they like the jail facilities in Thailand.

Only pathetic losers starts a bar fight.

"Off you go to the monkey house... pathetic losers'?? Oooh get you! Maybe it was just such terribly hurtful slights which started it all off in the first place! Only so much a man can take, you know!!.. just hope the poor lads didn't have raspberries blown at them and folks pulling gern-faces and shouting 'Nuuuuuurrrrrrr!' down the street as they rode off in the back of the pickup!.. by the way, pick any other good ones up in the schoolyard today? tongue.pnggiggle.gifwai.gif

  15. Easy to see how keeping bars open at 3:30 am is a recipe for disaster...every single time. What do people do at that hour? How about just closing and letting people sleep. (not to mention it is a holiday and they were in violation). Midnight sounds about right, for closing the cash register... although I would agree that door should be locked tight by 1am. That is plenty night life....and people are already drunk enough.

A lot depends if you are 20 or 80 year old

.A lot of people do not venue out until 10 or 11 at night.

That's why it's called night life and not early evening life.

Haha.. yeah.. 'Oooh.. folk nowadays.. wanting to be out till gone midnight...' blah blah drone drone... at least respect that other folks have their own ideas about 'fun' and 'life', and that just because many like to drink until the early hours, it doesn't necessarily follow that trouble will happen.. that it can and sometimes does, as here, is usually more a symptom of those who like to make it happen anyway, from one side or the other.. just the way of [some of] the people in the world we live in.. your right, if it and they are so offensive/ scary/ repugnant (circle as applicable), is to stay away from such places and people not to sit in judgement on what should and shouldn't be allowed, according to your own 'sensibilities'... thumbsup.gifwai.gif

  16. Funny they have to have 'crackdowns' on things which are illegal anyway!! Might as well just admit that the enforcement of the statutory laws aren't actually working and/ or being applied with any real will!.. of course, the rest of the world, and even anyone reading the latest 'THIS TIME we mean it!!' announcement recognise such things for what they really are, a giveaway admission of uselessness in law-enforcement and even naivete about how the rest of the world views such governing agencies' attempts to appear that things are otherwise... wai.gif

  17. It is sad that people have blind faith in Thai healthcare - some pay the price for this, but few realise the risk they are taking.

this person had no option but to follow the course he did - he might have acted quicker when infection set in - but then most people are unaware of what the early signs of infection can be.

Drawing comparisons with procedural delays in other systems is not a valid argument - after many years experience inside the Thai healthcare system and talking to many foreign workers in major hospitals I can tell you that here are SERIOUS flaws in the Thai system. ........ Training and accountability being the foremost.

Don't think that just because there in ONE doctor there who is "good" means the system is good too - the whole system depends on ALL those working there - it doesn't even matter if they have the "latest equipment' if they aren't operating in correctly it doesn't mean a thing.

Personal experience is not valid - many people leave hospitals thinking it was great because they were "cured" - yet they don't have any idea of whether or not they got the most appropriate treatment.... or simply just lucky.

Thai healthcare is a lottery - the guy in the OP is an example of this - an elementary blunder by a Thai Medical practitioner that in any other country would have resulted in some form of official action is here regarded as "just one of those things"

Ok, Doc!.. I and many others I've known have been 'lucky' quite a few times, here, then, yeah? And Personal experience is not valid ? Presumably as it doesn't match with your own viewpoint?... well, nothings perfect and many things in Thailand aren't but then where is? Healthcare-wise, people way too regularly apparently go through hell, even occasionally die seemingly needlessly, in EVERY health system I've heard of, meaning it seems that there will ALWAYS be flaws. But, I suppose it's only valid if we're knocking things here, yeah? Luckily, I (and many others) remain a little more open than this, actually going by those 'invalid personal experiences' - and of those around us - to make (what WE believe to be..) TOTALLY VALID evaluations of what we encounter... wai.gif

  18. Bacteria is different in Thailand? If it's 'stronger' it might just be down to the misuse of antibiotics regularly dispensed for colds and flu which are viral, and for almost anything else.

Won't you 'Nay-Sayers' EVER stop trying to find a negative to turn onto Thai people themselves?!! You p*** me off you really do!! Not that all is rosy here and often far from it, but then our own countries are often even worse, in various aspects, whatever lies we tell ourselves (or we'd still be there, though actually I'm sure you doomsday-abroad merchants would be finding something, someone, closer to 'home' to whinge incessantly ad nauseam ad infinitum about!!)...

Hot countries are known to have far more virulent bacteria, hence why so many terrible diseases, pandemics etc seem to come from such hot places.. hot zones, etc.. yeah, yeah someone getting a serious infection in Thailand must be down to 'the misuse' of antibiotics here.. easy and clear, yeah? Not. Instead of dreaming your ridiculously idyllic dreams of 'my beautiful country and people back home', and 'the way things should be done' why not, for a minute, wake up and smell the (very natural) thorns we can all find ourselves stuck amongst!!!... wai.gif

  19. Straight out murder then by a couple of numbskulls.

Mmm.. a difficult case for Columbo, it wasn't!!..

'So, as your friend here corroborates, you simply drew your shotgun, Mister Kanapong, and blasted the man down in the early hours of this morning, in self-defence, fearing for your own life?.. and that it's just a pity that this video camera here (without any film in it anyway) was not only empty of film but was aiming AWAY from the direction of the incident, otherwise it would prove the absolute truth of your claims, yes?'.. 'Well, I put it to you, gentlemen, that this array above our heads of other (fully-loaded) cameras aiming DIRECTLY at where the incident took place, AND this .38 caliber pistol, Mister Mehet the 'would-be attacker' held in his deceased hand, with YOUR name on it, Mister Kabin, tell us a very DIFFERENT story...' wai.gif

  20. "It asks all Thai people to give them warm welcome while assuring that related agencies will help inform the Chinese about Thai customs and culture."

As strange as it might seem to them, driving on the wrong side of the road and sending other motorists to the emergency room is not a Thai custom. I never imagined anyone could make Thai drivers look competent, by the Chinese have accomplished that and in a big way.

Other customs which are not Thai:

    1) Stopping in the middle of the road to look at a map or take photos

    2) Spitting on the floor of a restaurant

    3) Relieving yourself wherever you happen to be

    4) Using sacred/holy vessels to dispose of your used toilet paper.

    5) Talking at such a high level that no one else can even hear themselves think.

Commenters...Please add to the list as you see fit.

Met some apparently lovely Chinese, here, some not so lovely.. as with the Thais themselves.. issue with the whole customs and culture thing, is it tends to be 'used' against you, when it suits. By this, I mean oftentimes the actual issue gets dismissed, is refused to be debated, in favour of the old accusatory, throw away, and easy-out line, You don't understand Thailand/ Thais'. As for the driving, a TV programme I saw a while ago about 'Road Safety', or rather lack of, highlighting (via stats and video'd examples) various countries' dismal driving/ riding practices, gave the worst two places as China and India. Thailand ain't at all great, road users generally highly unaware and/ or easily distracted.. 'What other road users?' - 'Ooh, a tall tree!'.. as I've found during six years aboard my sporty little Honda Click, but there really are much worse places, includng where I spent time teaching last year.. north Vietnam!.. 'Coming at ya!!'??!!.. a nightmare!!! wai.gif

  21. All very well thought out, and researched re: the previous proposition(s) of the idea.. not.. by the self-appointed PM!, '.. the high-speed train project from Bangkok to Pattaya OR Hua Hin MIGHT BE a joint venture in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Thai and.. (er, pleeeeeease!!..) foreign investors were both welcomed, said the premier.'.. not like this is a new, fresh and innovative idea, to be so clueless about it.

Also that he's 'instructed all ministries to integrate information on their investment strategies so that he could use it for his official trips to foreign countries' and still claimimg that those clearly uninformed Americans have a 'misunderstanding of Thailand's internal affairs' but that 'Thailand and the U.S. NEED to continue their trade relations as politics is politics'., just shows how ill-equipped he is for the job, (Basically, just sounds like clueless, naive, statements - soundbites - and 'strategies' I might make and put forward if I was suddenly made PM.. maybe even on my Friday evening special 'my turn' show!).. David Brent for PM, anybody?"... wai.gif
