  1. I believe the Kashmiri red chilli powder is the proper source of the colouring though I know a drop of red colouring would bring about the desired colour but it's the original stuff I'm after.

Sharonb, do you mean Yaowrat in Bangkok? If, so I think I can wait! :)

    Not Yaowarat

    Phahurat. It is little India

Deggji Mirch is a chilli powder that is very red. They also sell something specially for tandoori.

There are lots of shops there selling indian products

Or you can ask them for Kashmri red chilli powder and see if they have it.

There's a variet of chilli powder available there

  2. Thank you everybody for showing how incompetent the government is in this country. Honestly, as much as I don't think Thaksin should come back, he would have the balls to do something about a situation like this. Unlike the current PM who sits in his office and gives empty threats of a crackdown. Maybe the reds are right. Abhisit has sure shown it the last few weeks that he's unfit to handle any critical situations. How can a government be in power that can't even maintain order in its nations capital.

One can't blame PM Abhisit alone

He needs the army to do the crackdown

    Gen Anupong os equally soft

The UDD now know and so that the rest of the world that Thailand has a PM who is soft and the army gen is soft too

    bad combination

  3. Where to get tempeh starter in Thailand? I know that in Indonesia and Malaysia Raprima Ragi Tempeh is used for making tempeh. Haven't found it in Thailand so far. Do Thais from the deep south eat tempeh?

I used to make it myself with commercial starter culture and it worked out very well, wrapped in banana leaves from our garden.

Check with the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok. Ask for the canteen and you may have to order in advance

when there is a diplomatic bazaar they normally sell it at their stall

  4. At some places the liquid inside is bright orange and the taste is so sweet and artificial that it's obviously orange squash, not orange juice. Other places have a bag of squeezed oranges on display but certainly add syrup and probably a lot of water to pad profits and appeal to the Thai sweet tooth. I only buy it from places I know for sure squeeze it fresh and add no other ingredients. Unfortunately, such places seem to be getting squeezed out (unintentional pun) by the unscrupulous orange squash sellers.

Had original pure fresh orange juice today at Or Tor Kor market

no sugar, water or salt added

pricy but at least i got the real stuff

  5. Gotta agree with Polecat, Bonobo and others.

The french loaf (baked twice daily as far as I know) in Saint Etoile is the best shop bought bread I've found in BK. Go just after 5pm to get it fresh from the oven, hurry up though as it sells pretty fast.

The only Saint Etoile I know is in Paragon and sad to say has been closed for so long

any other outlet that is open?

  6. Yes they are just very similar to a satsuma!

And normally to pad the profit out a bit they use a very light sugar syrup almost watery but lots of sugar in it,if you want and are obviously standing there while they make it just ask them not to put any syrup in it,but for sure the quantity will be less but the quality will be better at the same price of course :)

At certain places, they add in a bit of salt too

  7. I find I have to 'shop around', to find a decent loaf of bread.

A lot of breads, have a high sugar (nam tarm) content, which makes it too sweet for my liking.

Cheese, which I shouldn't have, is relatively expensive, so it keeps my consumption down.

Not sure where you stay but I buy my bread from Marriott on Charoen Nakorn

    Very reasonably priced too

    B60 per loaf

they have a very decent selection

I like their dark rye that they call the farmer bread because the loaf is shaped that way

  8. This number seems accurate

My office is at Centralworld and every morning there are lots of people who come to work.

    Lots are out of jobs.

The reds are not only affecting the rich but also the working class and the vendors

Not sure they would be welcomed anywhere

I am staying away from the area as you never know when all hel_l will break loose.

    Soon I hope

They have occupied the area since the 3rd of April and not sure when the circus will end

Times are bad as it is and we certainly don't need them to make it any worse.

I would have respect for them if they had taksin's children amongst themselves since they are fighting for him

If his kids don't want to join you then is he worth fighting for? the children will benefit more than anyone else.

please correct me if i am wrong

  9. OK, I see the Lurpak 250g (mentioned in post 4) is £1.38 (Aprrox B70) at Sainsburys UK online.

How much here? Of course the poor xchange rate (30% down on historical values) does not help!

    The localbutter 'Orchid' is B77

    Lurpak is B175

    Lots of difference

  10. If you're a farang in Thailand and not on the side of the Reds, then you're a traitor to everything the West has achieved in the modern era. You yellow, old-school, old-money supporters posting here would still be in the factory earning less than five dollars a day if it wasn't for socialists fighting for workers rights, true democracies, legal systems functioning equally for rich and poor, and universal healthcare and education. Thaksin is the catalyst for this uprising, whether he's good or bad. The Bangkok elite and their repressive rule is the cause - keeping the poor in their place with fear from every angle for decades. Farang! Stand up and fight for these PEOPLE's rights!

At the beginning,I tolerated their circus. then from April 3rd, my office is closed because it is at Central World. I still felt pity for them. But now enough is enough.

Get off Ratchaprasong. If they dare they should go block the Victory Monument and see what the army does.

They are not fighting for democracy. They are fighting for Taksin. The man who has changed his citizenship. I know this because I have walked thru' the circus and have spoken to them and asked who are you fighting for. Yourselves? the farmers? who?and the answer was Taksin.

Fighting for Taksin is not democracy. I have nothing against him while he was PM. I did well and after the coup my business has gone down too but i have my doubts that even if Taksin was PM problems would be over. Please wake up and realise that he is the one creating all the current problemsin Bangkok.

Thailand is a tourist destination and if you haveno tourists it equates to no business whch means no jobs and therefore no money

I want to know that if your office was closed for 2 weeks what woud your reaction be?

Patient or you would probably be a patient of hypertension.

  11. Thanks everyone

I have tried the local butter "orchid" and isn't tasty

    will try the german butter

any place that sells fresh butter?

fresh butter with sea salt on a slice of toast is heavenly and a cup of coffee or tea to go with it

or toast with butter and marmalade will do

  14. Sure you can squeeze limes... but just as with coconut milk, the Thais have no problem buying Tetra-Pak Aroy-D or or Coconut milk powder when the fresh pressed stuff is 3 meters away... You may in Post #1 be referring to some of the isotonic powders which I see in the 7-11

Call this number and they have lots of stuff that expats need

    0841077867

    sunshine

  15. A friend here on Samui tried for a long time and evidently they are not available. The only thing to do is to make your own though lamb is expensive here but you can get cheap mutton in the Muslim areas. Good luck

There is goat's milk being sold at Rama 2 soi 33

You have to go really deep in the soi and you will find it

    maybe they can help you

another alternative is to go to Nana and ask the people there

  16. I usually go to Bhesaj Chula

Is this related to Chula U? If so, need prescriptions? Can you be a little more specific about location?

    Thanks! :)

It is not related to Chula U but was recomended to me by a doctor

    prices are reasonable

It is between Pan Pacific Hotel and Charn Issara

  17. in my 5 years in BKK, The biggest range and cheapest pharmacy i found is in Sukhumvit.

I do not have the full address, but its BTS Asok or Nana. Find soi 10, right across the road from soi 10 about 20 meters to the right. Its a large pharmacy, inside 99% of the time there is a huge Golden Retriever(dog)

One guy who works there speaks fluent English and they have the largest range of medication and almost half the price of other pharmacy's

Just an example. Clarinese(used for blocked ears and nose) every pharmacy is 250-280 baht, this pharmacy its 160baht.

It is called SOUTHEAST PHARMACY near Soi 15. Best prices I have foundin BKK.

The pharmacies that I use are on Rama 4 Rd near PanPacific Hotel

I usually go to Bhesaj Chula
