  1. hello,

how you getting on with your fault ?

are you in chiang mai ? i'll take a look for you,

if you had some work done last week maybe they disconnected a battery or alternator cable and didn't put it back very well and that's causing your voltage drop.

what car is it and how old is it ?

  2. hi,

i would recommend you buying your bus ticket the day before you travel from the arcade bus station - i think there's 2 night buses one leaves at 7 ish and the other 8 ish ? if you can get the earlier one because it's a 24 seater compared to the 40 seater (just means you'll have longer leg room) .

i've only ever been on the later one and i think the bus company is called crackapon or something.

the bus goes to udon thani then can get a another to non khai(very cheap and they leave every half hour or something) from non khai you can get a tuk tuk etc to the border there's usually other ppl doing the same so sharings a good idea.

when you get to the border you'll walk through and be ferried onto a shuttle bus that drives you accross the bridge to laos (shuttle bus cheap) once your into laos you can get a taxi etc to vientiene which takes about 20 mins ?

what i usually do is go straight to the embassy from the border and put in the visa application because it has to be done in the morning - collections are the next day if open in the afternoon.

there's 2 embassys one is called royal or something but your after the normal one for visas - just tell taxi driver they will know which one to goto .

i would recommend you take 2 passport sized photos with you .

also there's private people outside the gates who will sell you photos but they are more expensive and it gets a bit caotic sometimes - also out side the embassy gates there's ppl who can do the process for you but i wouldn't use them and it's very easy to do anyway if you have your own photos just go inside gates and about 50 meters on the right are the application forms and queuing ticket etc.

one other problem you will probably find is that because they are closed no. 3 and 5 ? you may find that they are very busy no 4 and 6 (maybe 2 or 3 times as many ppl) which means you will want to get there early if not you may be spending hours and hours at the embassy -

from the embassy you can get a tuk tuk to the city center that costs about 60 baht ?

how long are you spending in laos ? are you planning to travel along the river ?

there's a few hotels near the embassy but there's nothing else there maybe you want to head towards the river front and fountain square i think there's 2 large hotels on the river next to each other that ppl recommend and there's a few music bars etc .

during the day you can find many temples and gardens/lakes etc all worth a look but there's not much in the way of entertainment.

    it's an nice quiet city.

good luck and send me some more info. i've been through laos and may be able to help.

the money is called kip and something like 250000 to 1000 baht ? depending on where your going depends on what money you need to be thinking about.

sorry for the essay - got a bit carried away.

  3. hi,

    ok ,

    i've found this info :

    http://www.dopa.go.th/English/servi/birth.htm

it says that we need to take house registration certificate (house owners copy) we're renting a house and landlord gave us a certificate but it's in girl friends name - should i get it changed to mine ?

do you know any fathers in same situation as me who have registered the birth in chiang mai ?

are you sure that i can register the birth in uk ? do you have any internet sites that you can send with info. on etc ?

    all the best,

    chris

  4. hi mario,

    so just to clarify,

when i get my first type o all i need to take is the birth certificate (is the one from the hospital sufficient or do i need to wait for the amphur one ?) to laos and they will issue me with a one year ? do you know the cost ? (do i still need to do border crossings every 3 months ?) then after the first year i need to be legal father and show some money to extend it for another year ? are the extensions done in thailand or do i have to keep going to laos etc ?

so the hospitals just supply the forms and either they or us will take them to the amphur to process ? do the amphur do everything in 1 day ?

if the hospital want to get involved i assume the certificate gets sent back to the hospital and then they contact us ?

what do you mean by legalising the thai birth certificate at the british embassy ? is that not the same as registering it ?

on the final birth certificate what family name will the baby have ? do we decide ? does it really make any difference legally anyway ?

have you seen the form for registering the birth ? can't i just sign it at the bottom instead of my girlfriend or someone at the hospital ?

    regards.

  5. hi,

    thanks for info.

what about the registering in thailand ? i read that it needs doing with in 15 days at the amphur and it's better to have my name as the one who registers ? can i do it on a tourist visa ? seems unlikely to me ? if it makes no difference maybe just let the hospital do it ?

do you know about getting a visa for myself ? apparently i can a get - non imm type o ? can i get one as soon as we have the birth certificate ? would i have to return to uk to get one or can i goto laos or malaysia etc does the hospital write out the birth certifcate and give it to us a day or two after the birth ? on the birth certifcate is the babys name just her first name or do we have to select which family name to use ?

if i return to the uk can i register the birth there instead of the embassy in bangkok ? because i heard they charge 10,000 baht ? also do i need to register for uk citizenship with-in 15 days also ?

how soon can i goto court and legalise fatherhood ? is it something fathers are doing in thailand ? i assume the 3 of us just goto court and fill in some forms ?

are there any other things that i should be doing ?

    thanks guys,

    chris

  6. hi,

we're having our first child in june 2010 and i'm after information about birth certificate, dual registration/citizenship and passports etc.

i'm from the uk on a tourist visa and my girlfriend is thai , we're not married and currently living in chiang mai.

    all advice appreciated,

    chris

  7. hi,

i'm no expert but it sounds like you have a double entry visa which means that you can use it 2 times (on the visa dooes it say number of entries 2 ?)- they will stamp it as used on your second entry.

maybe your previous visas were single ones ?

i don't understand what your travel plans are - send some more info and maybe can help you ?

    chris

  8. hi all,

    thank you for helping,

    we are not married,

sounds like i'm better off registering the birth myself if possible - i don't understand how the family name works my girlfriend says that there will be 2 names or something ? one thai and one english ??

sounds like i have to wait until birth certificate comes through first then sort visa later ? i can goto laos and hope for a third tourist visa if not i'll have to do visa runs every 2 weeks.

i may try to ask for a special 365 day extension to tourist visa but i'm not sure what they need to hear to get one.

    thanks again enjoy the holidays,

    chris

  9. hi,

i need to find out what my options are for staying here in thailand (chiang mai).

i've been here for the past 10 months using double entry 60-day tourist visas issued at laos.

my current one runs out in may and i'm thinking of going back and trying for another one but i'm worried they may say no because i've had 2 already and also they may have changed their policy since march ?

my thai daughter is being born early june.

    thanks for looking,

    chris
