  1. Ive just had Sunday lunch at the olde bell for the first time even though ive lived in chiang mai for 6 years, it was a nice dinner, myself and friend had pork, the wife had beef and my daughter had Thai food, all four of us enjoyed the food. Has a Yorkshireman I can say that the puddings were ok but not as good as my mam makes :) . Thanks also for the free glass of wine even though the waitress said it wasn't on offer anymore, she asked someone and it appeared a few minutes later. I'll definatley be back. Cheers.

With all the TV members that are having Sunday lunch there, it seems strange that the waitress wouldn't know the deal for the entire month of May.

Maybe it's not advertised openly, only TV members know about it and only those who know, ask and get?

That is correct sir! The offer is only advertised to TV members and Olde Bell Gold Card Holders, it's not for the general public! That said, the waitress did know about it, but it can be very difficult to persaude the locals that you are giving something away! So she phoned me first - just to confirm- which I did. No harm in that!

  2. Well we had a good night. Sang a few of the old songs: Lili Marlene, It's a Long Way to Tipperary, White Cliffs of Dover, Etc. Enjoyed a buffet and a few of the very same yarns about our mums and dads experiences. All in all a worthwhile experience in this corner of a foreign field that is.....etc etc.

no one present felt their mums or dads would have fought for the Germans if they'd seen Britian today. I respect your personal view bigwheelman, but fortunately most Brits of my acquiantance still appreciate the old country, warts and all!..even if we don't want to actually live there!

  3. We have no problem with well controlled and well behaved dogs. My wife and son love dogs and so do most of the staff!

We've got an outside area and I'm sure the local dogs will be interested to meet a new friend!!!

  4. Can't be to many people going about Chiang Mai that can remember the WW2. You would have to be 75 years old or more :)

In a place like Chiang Mai there are more than you might think who do remember it, anyway, you don't have to have lived through the war to want to celebrate the liberation of our mums and dads etc!

Well said Millwall, I arrived a year or so after VE Day but:

"...at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them".

Sorry, cannot be at the sing-song tonight so blast our a chorus of Land of Hope and Glory for me.

    We'll certainly do that Rohitsuk!

and seeing you quoted the Act of Remembrance, you may be interested to know that the Chiang Mai branch of the Royal British Legion meets at The Olde Bell on the first and 3rd Wednesday of the Month.

    When you go home

    Think of us and say,

For your tomorrow, we gave our today

    Kohima Epitaph

  6. today is the 65th Anniversary of the final victory in Europe by Allied forces over the nazis.

to celebrate this day, there will be a sing a long this evening at The Olde Bell. British Pub, Loi Kroh Rd, starting at around 8pm. Songs from the war years will feature, together with a few excerpts from Churchills speeches.

There'll also be a FREE buffet for customers.

    All Welcome!

  7. for those of us who haven't been following your threads, Gonzo, why not give us a flavour of what you do? Mrs Millwall_fan and I are always looking for new places for a bit of nosebag!! looked at the map so know where you are, what do you do?

  8. At my daughter's K/G they got 1 hour a day. Seem's to me 2 hour's is a bit long, could be the staff just want it easy. At one of our local school's the kid's look at TV for three hour's in the afternoon. But It's cheap, so maybe it's you pay's your money ect.

Seem's to me you might want to ask your daughter for some guidance on the use of apostrophe's.

As indeed you might yourself. Your final use of the word apostrophe, should not have an apostrophe in it!

  9. I suppose the negatiove reposts are a result of the lack of interesting new threads for some of your guys to trash! This is a forum. On this forum I have informed residents and other interested parties about Sunday Lunch in my Pub. I have paid for the privelige of doing that. Why is that such a problem to some of you? I will be letting the members of this forum know about other events in the forthcoming days and weeks because I am in the process of renewing my sponsorship. I am perfectly happy to discuss alternatives to my pubs humble offerings on the threads I start, as long as they are on topic. There are lots of offerings for Sunday Lunch in Chiang Mai. I merely present my place as a possiblity - a choice. Some of you will like my pub and what it offers and some of you won't. By why you have to subject my pub to your venomous invective I really don't know.

I have a business to run and these are difficult times. There are few tourists here. so I mount promotions and so forth in an attempt to entice you, the resident, public in Chiang Mai to come and part with your hard earned cash in my establishment. This month we're offering a free meal from a list of 14 choices if you spend 240 baht on drinks every Monday and Thursday night (I chose 240 baht because its just under a fiver even at todays lousy rates) I don't make much profit on that but at least my gaff has got people in it while many are empty. i am trying my best, and most of my customers are happy wiht what we set out to achieve. we don't get it right all the time, but we try. End of pious input. Shoot me down guys!!!!

  10. It is extremely difficult for a foreigner to obtain eployment in The Kingdom. Many jobs are reserved for Thai nationals. Unless you open your own business with a large (by Thai standards) amount of capital which would qualify you for a work permit, the only relaistic option is to teach. you could teach in an International School if you have a teaching qualification (in a few cases a degree from the University of Khao San Road will sufice), or you try teaching English, for which the requirements vary from a full RSA CELTA certificate downto the basic requirement that you have English as a first language.

Other options are to land a job with a foreign company outside Thailand and get posted here or get a job with an NGO that is based here. That's about it unless you have a very specialised skill or something that a Thai can't do.

  11. I'm not sure how informing TV members about our Sunday Lunches is Spam? Kindly present your evidence that I have shouted down anyone's comments about other options at other restaurants. I have no problem with anyone mentioning other options - but I can understand the mods pulling posts that discuss sushi on a Sunday Lunch thread!

  12. Thaihog: It hardly seems fair to exclude me from a thread because the mods delete your posts! I am not a moderator nor do i have any influence over their activities. I can report if I think something is wrong - just the same as you can. For the record I did not press the report button over off topic comments on the Sunday Lunch thread.

Toolz: I say to you as well, I had nothing to do with the moderation of my Sunday lunch thread

  13. Please try to differentiate between my (paid for) promotion of my pub and the moderation of threads - over which I have no control and am not consulted on. For the record, I have no problem with anyone discussing other establishments that do Sunday Lunch. The Pub do a fine one and have done for years, but i am not a moderator so don't blame me for what they see fit to leave and what they remove.

  14. I'm afraid not,. As I run a pub, I don't generally do promotions on soft drinks as people don't tend to drink so many of them.

We do a full range of soft drinks though: Coke, Diet Coke, Fanta Sprite, Manao Soda, Ginger Ale,

Freshly squezed Pineapple, Melon, Apple and Orange

    banana, vanilla and chocolate shakes

A range of British Teas, coffees

so you should find something to wash down your Sunday Roast!

  15. you've got a bee in your bonnet 'originalposter'!! If you have a view on Sunday Lunches lets hear it. I don't think the mods would pull that. To my knowledge they only pulled a couple of off topic points. Why don't you share with Chiang Mai TV members your considered views on Sunday Lunch in this fine city. Have you tried ours at The Olde Bell or sunday Lunch at The Pub, or somewhere else. do let us hear of your experiences.

hmm... this post doesn't make sense now that Originalposters 2nd and more vitriolic missive has bee pulled.

  16. The list of points apart form #1 which everyone can agree wiht, are a pious collection of platitiudes that could cover a whole host of hidden agendas...but, that said, this is a chance for peace. If there is no hidden agenda, the Red Shirts should grab it! Why, Why, Why though, couldn't he hold it in October...before Loi Kratong and before the high season kicks in.

  17. Chiang Mai is a safe and exciting place to bring up kids with the zoo, the countryside and mountains all nearby. There are schools to suit all budgets and although you need to conduct extensive research there are good quality schools here. The fact that your daughter is too old for a pushchair is a major advantage. My lads 2 1/2 and still need a pushchair on long walks - they're a nightmare on Chiang Mai's pavements.

  18. One other piece of 'blatant self promotion' that I forgot to include in my hurry to post this on Saturday, was that with each Sunday lunch sold during the month of May, we're giving offering a FREE glass of house red or white wine. Just ask the waitress!

So during May you can get a roast pork dinner and a glass of vino for 195 baht (or 180 baht once you've got our Gold Card).

That's cheaper than pie and liquor in Manzies pie shop down the Old Kent Rd!

  19. Yunnie: Prices range from 195 baht for the Roast pork to 325 baht for the Garlic Lamb. If you are resident in Chiang Mai for more than 4 months of the year you can apply for our gold Card which gives you 10% off our prices.

Toolz: I think you'll find our portions are pretty large! Try us out and if your not full, I'll give you a refill free. How about that?

Sounds good. I'd like to break open my secret stash and get the Garlic Lamb. Do I have to say "It's Toolz" or can I just go: "<cough cough> Thaivisa, member # greater than 15,000, less than 20,000"? :)

@cmdream: Loi Kroh, left, past 7 Eleven, near yellow exchange kiosk, set in from the street, you don't see it till you're right in front.

Edit: definitely probably not going to be back by 31st May, but assuming you'll continue to be as "customer focused" throughout the year! :D

Something like that would do! or you could just PM me before you come along so that I can tell the staff!

BTW: you're evidently not in town at the moment but when were you last her? 'Cos I'm not even sure if the Queen Vic are doing their all you can eat Sunday Carvery anymore.

  20. OK!, now the cat's out of the bag, I might as well come clean: Gordon came over to Chiang Mai because he'd heard how good our Sunday Lunches were at The Olde Bell and wanted to pick up a few tips to take back home! He's heading up to our chef's Lahu hill tribe village next week, to discuss just how she makes her Yorkshire Puddings taste so good! I warned him he might get spotted by TV members if he went to the bar beer centre, but you know how headstrong he can be!
