  1. I just looked at this sale, wanted to book BKK to Penang but Penang wasn't part of the sale.

BKK - Colombo isn't 790, it's listed at 1990. 790 is only for certain domestic destinations. It is pretty clear on the air asia website.

Just looked at the mail again. It lists all destination for the low fare. Colombo IS one of them. It's true that when you get in to book your flight, fares start at 1990tb. Looks to me like a scam though.

I just looked at the website and you can get flights for 1990 baht, not the 790 bath as advertised so your right but holy crap you've got to be pretty hard up to complain about a flight from Bangkok to Colombo costing you US$64 each way.

Actually its 23$ (700 Baht) less as Airasia doesn't get to keep the Thai departure tax. So what OP really wants is a flight for 3$ (so 90 baht as in 790 baht all-in fare minus airport tax).

  2. You have to hunt the site and find the exact date that offers that price. It might only be one day.

I did, each day separately. and if you read my post, i even spoke to an agent about it, who admitted the price didn't exist although it's on promotion, and it's there only to draw attention!!!

Maybe you need to stop believing every word you hear. I have spoken to Thai customer service representatives all over the place and they will tell you anything ("no have", "finish", "yes", etc) just to get out of a conversation or because they cannot admit that they don't know something (loss of face). I have flown Airasia from Australia to Europe and back virtually for free so I know that their advertised fares do exist, however

    - they are more than likely sold out within the first few minutes. Because the servers don't work during a sale (overload), use their mobile page instead

    - Airasia credit card holders get priority booking I think one or two days before the fares go on sale to the public. It is possible that some fares have been already snapped up by then (I do agree that the fare shouldn't be advertised to the public then)

In ALL communication with Airasia I have always received the true bookable prices stating the destinations. I think a practice like the one described in the OP would be deceptive, maybe he can post a screenshot of the email?

And by the way, it could have simply been an error. Airasia usually doesn't advertise fares from 790 baht when in reality they are from 1990 baht.

  3. US gas prices seem to be anywhere between $3.78 and $4.23 a gallon, so thats 31.5 Baht per litre if we take an average of 4$ for calculation. When you look at the numbers above you will see that nobody is taking the piss in Thailand when it comes to gas prices as it all adds up, even the refinery prices .

The first petrol stations in Europe just hit $10 a gallon and you're seriously complaining about the fair and transparent petrol pricing in here... Get your car converted to LPG or NGV if you want to save, more environmentally friendly anyway.

  4. On this site you can view the detailed composition of the fuel price updated every day. Don't talk rubbish like 50% tax if you don't know.

    Interesting things to note:

Ethanol went down from being nearly twice as expensive as petrol at the refinery level to being roughly same price.

There is a huge difference in markups. While the retailer markup for 91 unleaded is under 2 Baht, its 12 Baht for E85, the final price of which is still only half of the price of 91.

Whatever happened to 91 being cheaper than gasohol when they scrapped the oil fund contribution for non-ethanol gasoline (7 Baht I think) I don't know. When they did it a couple of months ago 91RON was 42 and gasohol 35 Baht. The next day they were both the same price. Now 91 is back to 42 Baht and gasohol is still 5 Baht cheaper though it contains only 10% ethanol.

  5. I cannot comment on the lost card scenario, but when we moved to another province my wife and I both had seperate SCB accounts with debit cards and she advised me we should make a new account in the province we moved to since there is an ATM charge on each transaction if using the SCB card from another province,,, I thought this BS but I did take her advice. but whether its correct or not i'm not sure.

This is correct, I pay 15฿ for each withdrawal at my own bank in a different province. Since it's 20฿ to user other ATMs I am not bothered about where I withdraw. You can change your branch though.

In any case, you get charged for depositing at ADMs (something like 12฿ in the same province and 27฿ in different provinces).

  6. I didn't say it doesn't happen. Green bottles are more likely to get a skunky taste if handled improperly. But I think in >99% of cases the beer is handled properly (to Thai standards) and perfectly fine. If you are so concerned about it getting spoiled I suggest to just buy it by the carton burp.gif.

But your earlier post suggested that it is just different packaging to make it look fancy. It's more than that. Just as another example: If you compare a Singha and a Leo they both come out of the same brewery, have the same alcohol content and have the same bottle colour yet Singha tastes better cause they use better hops or brewing processes. So, in case of Phuket beer or Federbrau, if you cut out the rice and all use premium European hops, don't add chemicals you can be assured that the beer will taste better and it's more than a marketing gimmick.

And I have never really noticed a difference between a German Pilsener in a brown bottle and one in a green bottle. How is that? Do they artificially add Skunk to the brown bottles?

  7. All you guys complaining about rice and chemicals:

    Wikipedia:

" Phuket Beer and Federbrau are the only Thai beers brewed according to the German purification laws or Reinheitsgebot;"

Phuket is probably the best beer in Thailand, but it's expensive and fairly hard to get hold of.

Federbrau (made by Chang) is cheaper than Heineken and sometimes even Singha, tastes a lot better and is available in many places

About 32 baht for a small can or bottle in TOPS, Big C Extra etc.

Big ones only in Family Mart (54baht) or 7-Eleven (65 baht).

But then again I drink Archa which they managed to push up from 30 baht a bottle to 39 baht in convenience stores mad.gif.

What Phuket beer, Federbrau, Heinekin, and Carlsbad have in common is green bottles and a frequently skunky taste that comes from the beer being spoiled by being light-struck . It's that skunky taste that many people think is the hallmark of "good" beers. Put Leo in a green bottles and it would be just as excellent as Carlsberg.

Of course this is complete nonsense as beer is being transported in cartons and therefore should have no exposure to sunlight at all (I always shake my head when I see the Coke truck going around town with the PET-packs on top without a cover). Surely it won't get spoiled by the 2 Megawatts of fluorescent light in your local Family Mart?

Apart from UV light beer gets spoiled by heat but that would apply to the other brands too.

Try a Federbrau, it DOES taste completely different and comes very close to German or Czech beers (tastes a bit like Pilsner Urquell actually).

  9. Hi,

I'm on a tourist visa extension. The original visa (sticker) is in my old passport however when extending the visa the entry stamp was transferred to the new passport. The immigration officer wrote down the number of the old passport and put it next to the new stamp in the new passport.

Now my old passport is at the motorbike shop and I won't have time to pick it up if I want to leave the country on the same day.

You think that taking only the new one is sufficient?

  10. Hi,

I think this has been asked before but has never been properly answered by the people concerned.

Today, I got word that the ministry of education refused issuing me a visa extension letter as I am 'too close to the expiry of my visa'. It seems I haven't been to school for one or two weeks so I was there too late to sign the documents.

My visa expired today and I am now on a 7-day extension. I really don't think the new letter would come through within 7 days, so I think I will have to leave the country.

My question is: Will I be able to obtain a re-entry permit? I can't obtain a new visa outside the country cause my passport is full. There is a big USED stamp over the visa, but I think multiple entry visa holders can just leave every 90 days and never worry about the documentation from school, right? So am I right by thinking that a multiple re-entry permit would (technically) convert my single entry into multiple entry?

Please advise... I'm a bit stuck here :/

  11. I can't edit my last post. I read though the tout thread on 'the other forum' and it seems rather common. I guess one of the guys at the door was sneaking up behind me. Also, what I hear is that the touts are now 'offically licensed' and A-gogo owners will get threatened if they don't play the game, i.e. accept giving the touts a huge commission when they bring in customers. They are not necessarily employed by the A-gogos themselves.

  12. Went to Roxy A-GoGo the other day and expected to pay 130 baht for a beer same as last year. But I requested the drinks menu nevertheless. 500 for a beer and 800 for an OJ? I laughed and asked for the real menu. She wouldn't bring it. So we just left, luckily we didn't get hassled no more.

A couple of days later, one of the promoter guys on the street comes and stops me "come A-gogo A-gogo". I asked "which one?". He said "Roxy's". So I said no, I don't wanna pay 500 for a beer. He said "okok 400". I said no. He goes on "ok 300". What kind of business is this?

Also, while the nice and honest gogo bars (Rock-Hard A-Gogo, Suzie Wong's 3 A-Gogos in Soi SeaDragon) had next to no customers, Roxy's was absolutely packed and it was hard to get a seat (mind u it's a rather huge A-Gogo). I just don't understand people?

You were almost certainly followed into Roxy by a tout. The tout demands a commission from the bar which you pay for, hence the 500 baht beers.

It's a well known scam in Patong.

I didn't know Roxy were using the touts. Suzy Wong group a-gogos don't allow them, so you're safe from inflated menus in those establishments.

Most tourists don't know this of course but the golden rule in Pating is not to go anywhere with a tout and look behind you when you go into any bars of this type. And finally, as has been said before on this thread, if you don't like the menu prices just leave.

Did not. Went in by ourselves and got shown what seemed a real menu. Correct me if you're sure that they still got another or the old menu.

  13. Agreed! and indeed I am mystified at where all his information comes from! I have seen some of those things mentioned happen, but they were not from Farang owned bars only! Indeed how do you get beaten up by going to another bar. Do they watch you when you walk down the street and if you don't enter into their bar do they send a squad of goons into the bar you are in and beat you up??? What cobbelers! Overcharging in bars is done by everyone who thinks they can get away with it!

Friends of mine took other friends to a go go bar, got overcharged (500 baht a drink and not as advertised) they were not allowed to leave until the bill was settled. Tourist police were called. When the wife spoke to one the tourist police on the side to enquire why this happens he screemed at her to %&*$ off from Thailand! Finally the reality of how it really is here...if you don't tow the line and just cough up like all good "quality" tourists should then £$%& off.

  14. I applied for a Non-Immigrant ED visa in Brisbane a while ago, no worries, very friendly lady, done in 20 minutes. Was told I had to get multiple entry because I would have to leave the country every 3 months (which is untrue, but she wouldn't listen to me).

Applied for another one in Cambodia last week and was told "you only get single entry" and now have to wait 5 days for processing...

  15. Yes I was talking incl. tax, this was last year, I am not sure how different it is now. But I been coming and going many times and even on the shortest notice I never paid more than just under 800 Euros ... so advertising the same route for 900+ is a bit silly.

It's usually between 26,000 and 30,000฿.... hey when Airasia started flying to Europe and even picked up nearly free flights so ended up paying something like 12,000 return. But if you're using Airasia you have to make your way to Kuala Lumpur first and in Europe they only fly to Paris and London (London-Standsted connects nicely to the rest of Europe via Ryanair for an average of 35 EUR per ticket all charges incl.).

  16. Sorry but there is absolutely nothing special about a "promotion" for nearly 1000 Euros to Europe.

The Middle Eastern airlines (Etihad, Qatar, not sure about Emirates) often have normal fares of about 27,000 baht, when there is a promotion they can even go as low as 22,000. And if you don't mind flying dodgy you could try Egyptian airlines or Russian Transaero. All regular fares. I been told Finnair is cheap too and they do connections to the rest of Europe (although only cheap from Thailand - last time I checked it was 700 EUR return from BKK and 800 EUR for the same ONE-WAY flight from Europe).

    37,300 ฿... what a joke!
