  1. I have been involved in several prison riots in NY and was the comander of the riot squad for 8 years, and never heard of riot cauased by confiscated cell phones. They were contraband and all the inmates knew it and took it for granted it would be confiscated and they would be locked up if they were caught with one, which was very rare. The big problem was getting the employees from bringing them into the prison, as they were not allowed to do this either. First time a guard or employee was caught doing this was usually 3 month suspension. Second time they got fired. One time I fogot i had it i n my pocket and I was talking to the captain when it rang. Luckily he cut me a break that time. As for transferring prisoners, this is standard procedure following a riot. The main participants get shipped off around the state, or in this case the country, and if found guilty of being involved get locked in cell a long time. This is Thailand though so I dont know what happens next. Perhaps they will jst take them out and shoot them. I often wished we could have done that back in NY, actually.

Was this just before you joined the Green Berets in Nam? LOL

  2. Basically this is a good idea.

7/11 staff do know the word for police.

There are not many tourist police stations, so 7/11 should have the

number for the nearest one and get an English speaker or some equivalent

    to show up from there.

I do not think there are any tourist police stations, there is only 1.

As per OP staff will be calling the general number not the station number.

Being tourist police, one would expect that all tourist police speak English.

As for understanding "police help, police help" for starters i would not be so sure it will be understood(it always takes 3 go's IN THAI to buy 500 baht phone card, and while my Thai may not be the best, but speaking in Thai and showing 5 fingers and hearing words like DTAC, i would of thought would be enough to get the idea, but sadly it is not and i always need to repeat myself and show my fingers minimum 3 times) So to understand "police help" may be little harder then you imagine.

Not to mention if someone was in such a need, last thing on their mind would be to run to nearest 7-11 in hope its the one that offers help.

And lastly while it might in some freakish way be a great idea, but usually all the crime against tourists d'not occur in tourist heavily populated areas.

Wow, you must speak some seriously bad Thai. I have never had such a problem and my Thai ain't great. Are you sure you're actually in Thailand? LOL

Also, please expand on evidence you have that "ALL the crime against tourists does not occur in heavily populated tourist areas". I personally find that very difficult to believe!

  3. They can worry about second languages as soon as children get a good grasp of Thai.

Absolutely wrong. Infants are quite capable of learning 2 languages at the same time. In our home my twin daughters were exposed to both. My wife would only speak to them in Thai, but use English to speak to me (she didn't want me to learn Thai). I would speak to the girls in English and repeat in pidgin Thai, and they certainly understood - the problem was that they would only speak Thai, at least while their mother was around.

Why on earth would your wife not want you to learn Thai?? The only people I've encountered that don't like me speaking Thai are bargirls because they don't like it when they can't talk behind your back and keep secrets from you. If I were u I'd start learning Thai ASAP :)

  4. Thai men should learn to teat us with more respect. Else ... you know what may happen.

Would have to agree with you despite the unveiled threat. Thai guys do not treat their women with much respect that I have seen. Seems the Farang have a head start here as most are at least polite and look after their Thai women/girl friends. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but if you stay away from bars and their 'fare', easy to find a nice lady who will reciprocate the respect. ... But the craziness is still there - just ask my wife! wink.gif

I disagree. At least Thais try to keep their affairs hidden. A huge proportion of Thai based expats cheat on their Thai partners rampantly.

Yes low class Thais may berate their wives in public but our working classes can be just as bad

  5. Incidents like these are the reason why I left Pattaya years back..... :bah:

This could happen anywhere in the world.

But this one happened in pattaya

The point is if you left every area that there were bar room brawls every so often there wouldn't be many places left to move to. In any case I would say that most people who get a kicking in Pattaya were not just minding their own business and beaten up randomly. The fact is that Pattaya generally attracts a low class of visitor, some of whom are swift to be verbally abusive and would not have the brains to walk away from a volatile situation.

This is a tragic case because of the newborn baby and wife he leaves behind, but it appears on the face of it that this guy was his own worst enemy.

  6. Excluding hospital treatment or a family emergency there is really no excuse for overstaying more than a day or two. I would suggest that a fair proportion of those who overstay are the sort of expat that the kingdom wants rid of and most decent expats want rid of.

I'm not sure about banging people up for this but I'm all for blacklisting those without a valid excuse and making them pay their own way home. US and Australia to name but a few wouldn't stand for this crap, so why should Thailand. Play the game straight and you don't get into bother

  7. All the bus drivers race each other to get to the stops first to get the fares.

The solution to this is to sort out public transport employee wages and stop them competing, not asking the drivers to slow down...

That is complete nonsense you have written. I used to have to catch a bus from Phrom Phong to Bang Na intersection to get a minivan to work. The problem is getting a bus to stop as they can't be bothered pulling into the inside lanes. If they were so concerned about fares they would be cutting up traffic to pick you up.

Try to make statements based on some semblance of fact please.

  8. What an idiot, or does he have mental health issues? Not content with alleging a fake consipracy against the government of Thailand (they "could have" planted drugs, but they didn't did they?) he now wants to take on the Australian government.

At least the other Red Shirt British gentleman has had the decency to shut his mouth about it once he was deported.

But you must remember he is of Irish descent.

The Irish can take a joke as well as anybody but what place does a stupid comment like this have on this board, tongue in cheek or not? Bear in mind that the Irish education system is one of the best in the world.

How many Irish people have disgraced themselves as visitors abroad?

    How about Bono....

haha. ok I concede that one
