  1. Can't say about Bangkok Bank but I have used this method several times with Kasikorn and no problems. They say it takes 40 days to clear and end up in your account. I guess this has a safety margin build in, in fact on every occasion it has taken only 3-4 weeks. My UK bank does not charge for the clearing process and Kasikorn charges 200 Baht/transaction.

  2. Catholics stopped having to eat fish on Fridays in the 1960s. Boy was I happy. :D

Fish was never manatory on a Friday, it was the obligation to abstain from meat that made fish the popular alternative. the rules for fasting and abstinence in the United States are:

    • Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent
    • Every person between the age of 18 and 60 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
    • Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on all other Fridays of the year, unless he or she substitutes some other form of penance for abstinence.

Now what penance would be acceptable in this lovely neck of the woods? <_<

  3. the gold standard is probably the Grandview hotel, IMO, something like 180 baht as I recall

Huli, do they serve a selection of Thai and western food, if so what is an example of the western fare on offer?

  4. You have indicated that price is not of importance, so i suggest you invest some of that money and get yourself to Chiang Mai and look at various areas and properties that are available.

Chiang Mai isn't such a big city and you could cover most of the better condo buildings within 3 or 4 days.

    Good luck

    Howard

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm in Chiang Mai currently and will do just as you suggest. I'm in no hurry to do this, as I'll only be here 3 months this year, but I plan on coming back repeatedly, and its nice to have a place that's yours, where you can store your stuff. And that has private internet :).

I was thinking this might be a good place to start, as obviously many of the buildings do look in desperate need for repair.

Also, my idea of 'best' is whichever building would sell for the most money per square foot not including location.

Wow! Lots of interesting advice Big P. Guess it's a case of "One man's meat..." etc. Just out of curiosity, have you made your decision yet and if so, where did you opt for and why. It's always nice to have closure on hot topics such as this.

    Thanks,

  5. My house doiesn't have barred windows and I've not been burgled. All my friends think I'm crazy, I think they're paranoid.

Having said that, someone's probably hopping out of the window with my laptop right now..... I need a new one anyway.

Paranoid! No way, btw what is your address? :whistling:

  6. Based on NancyL's experience above, I'll stay away from automatic bill payment. Just reading this short thread took almost as much time than my monthly trip to 7-11 for my electric and telephone bill and the monthly (or bi-monthly) trip to the mall for my internet bill.

btw, does anyone know where the closest 7-11 is?

Water bill also, 10 baht extra per item but hassle free makes it well worth the extra.

  7. I called their tech support yesterday after receiving the same email as others had. Basically what they told me is that we don't need to download anything from the link. It was intended for customers who had been having difficulty with keeping a constant connection to their service. At least that's what I understood from their representative.

Since I have not had any problems with 3BB's connection or service, I was told that I don't need to download whatever it is that's on the link.

As an aside, I strongly suggested that, since there are many non-Thai customers using their service, an English translation should accompany their notices. He said he'd pass that message along to his boss. Maybe.

Just change the DNS data in your Network Connections, the router should already be changed. Done mine all works well :)

  8. You can buy International Calling cards from CAT Telecom which give you a cheap rate. They have an office in Times Square on Sukhumvit Road and I'm sure elsewhere.

    Cheers

How do these cards compare in cost if you add the '008' prefix instead of the '001' when using a mobile?

  12. I watched the first three episodes of Himalaya with Michael Palin yesterday.

Top notch quality and Michael, really is great...so watchable.

I have to force myself to turn it off otherwise I'll finish it the same day!

I watched 'Around the World in 80 Days' in 2 days :) You're right, very addictive viewing, and i have forced myself to stay clear of the DVD player today so that i can get on with other stuff :D Can't believe that series is 21 years old, which makes it more interesting today than when if first came out due to the changes around the world since that time.

Nice to see you guys enjoying the fruits of my labour! I have added quite a lot more (movies, travelogues, tv shows etc) from my collection to the index which I will let you have in a day or two. First I have the job of house switching to take care of this weekend. :D

    Cheers,

    TB

Hi TB hope the move went ok :) When you get time can you wing your list off to me, I can smell rain in them there clouds. It could be time for feet up, MOW menu at my side and the DVD player ready to rumble!

  13. There have only been 2 small bombs in CM.

One went off at a place I walked by nearly every day, but it wouldn't have killed me ....... maybe blinded.

Yes, CM is great as long as you don't get blown up, far more likely to get killed in a m/c accident of which there are many.

Of course how wise it is coming to a country that is spiralling into civil war, when you don't have to, is not for me to comment.

There are a lot of very stupid people living here who choose to ignore the reality of the situation.

"I live here so it must be the best and safest place in the world, etc. etc."

I guess we speak as we find, Chiang Mai for me is, in the main, a peaceful, friendly and mostly tolerant area to live, but there again so are many places throughout the world. In todays society where are the guarantees...pass me the map and a pin please. :)
