  1. Furthermore

If Thaksin was truly corrupt he would have left office with not 1 billion but 20 billion. He would have milked the system.

    Not 20 billion. 400 Billion:

Thaksin Shinawatra has some 300 to 400 billion baht worth of assets.

He is believed to be generating 4 to 5 billion baht in profits a year, and has in total 400 billion baht worth of total wealth.

  2. Tarit's wife is alleged to have taken a bribe in exchange for paying less tax. I doubt very much Mr Tarit signed a receipt for the so called bribe.

Wife cheat, & hubby did not know?

    I may be naive, but . . . .

No buts about it, what you post is naive.

    1. It's only an allegation, no one has gone to court yet.

    2. Wife or husband cheats and the spouse doesn't know- very common my friend.

It's intriguing to watch the real Thais put the fake Thais away.

    Congratulations, Siripon.

  3. In addition to Thaksin, the DSI list of suspects included Veera Musigapong

I hope the law here actually carries out some serious sentencing. Sooner the better...

Veera Musikapong, a senior leader of the anti-government "red shirt" movement, arrives to appeal for his temporary release, at a criminal court in Bangkok July 28, 2010. The court postponed the decision on whether to grant him bail to Thursday. Veera and several other "red shirt" leaders face terrorism charges which theoretically carry a maximum penalty of death.

  4. Speaking of the Dynamic Duo, and in a separate case than the terrorism indictment, Thaksin had another arrest warrant issued against him for defrauding the Thai nation today. I believe it's the eleventh case now that is anxiously awaiting his return to his homeland:

New arrest warrant for Thaksin over filing false assets statement

    MCOT

    29 ก.ค. 2553

BANGKOK, July 29 - Thailand's Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for fugitive ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra for filing a false assets statement, but temporarily suspended the case until he is arrested.

The court decision was taken as neither Mr Thaksin or his representative appeared to hear the charges, which was deemed as possible flight.

As the court still does not know when the accused will report to court, the panel of nine judges agreed to temporarily suspend the trial until the fugitive premier is apprehended.

The court said the case will be considered again once Mr Thaksin is brought to trial.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) earlier filed its case with the court after the Supreme Court Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on February 26 ruled that Mr Thaksin and his former wife had concealed their declarable assets and that the ex-premier had abused his position as prime minister to enrich their personal businesses.

The court ruled to seize assets valued at Bt46 billion (US$1.4 billion) from the former prime minister and his family.

The NACC said the court ruling means Mr Thaksin falsified his financial statement by hiding the assets in the names of his children and other family members. The panel of nine judges therefore agreed to proceed with the case as filed by the anti-graft agency.

  5. In addition to Thaksin, the DSI'list of suspects included Veera Musigapong, Jatuporn Promphan, Natthawut Saikua, weng Tojirakarn, Waipot Arpornrat, Arisman Pongruangrong and Adisorn Piengket.

The others are Suporn Attawong, Kokaew Pikulthong, Kwanchai Praipana, Yoswarit Chuklom aka Jeng Dokchik, Nisit Sinthuprai, Karun Hosakul, Payap Panket, Wiphuthalaeng Pattanaphuthai, Phumkitti Sukchindathong, Suksek Pholteu, Charan Loypool, Amnat Intachote, Chayut Laicharoen, Sombat Makthong, Surachai Thewarat, Rachata Wongyod and Yongyuth Tuammee.

  6. Thai police seek terrorism indictment against former premier

    DPA

    Thu, 29 Jul 2010 08:12:19 GMT

Bangkok - Thai police on Thursday recommended that terrorism charges be filed against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and 24 others for their alleged roles in the deadly clashes between anti-government protestors and security forces in April and May.

Department of Special Investigation Director-General Tharit Pengdit handed 60 reports on the suspects over to the Attorney-General's Office.

The reports describe the suspects' alleged activities during the anti-government rallies and violence from March 14 to May 19, which caused the deaths of 91 people and injured over 1,800.

The list of suspects includes most of the top leaders of the so-called red-shirt movement that organized the demonstrations.

In addition to Thaksin, who is living abroad to avoid a two-year jail sentence for corruption, five more of the suspects remain at large and are believed to have fled abroad.

Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, alias Seh Daeng, who was on the original list of 26 suspects, was shot dead at a demonstration site on May 15.

Although Thaksin was abroad during the demonstrations, he spoke to the crowds in live and recorded broadcasts, urging them to carry on with efforts to bring down the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Deputy Attorney-General Waiwut Lortrakul said prosecutors would try to finish consideration of evidence and prepare indictments for submission to the Criminal Court by August 10.

If the prosecutors were unable to submit indictments to the Criminal Court by that time, the suspects currently being held would be released, he said.

  7. Interesting topic - funny that such a high percentage of posts (about the same as that of the losing Red candidate) come from the one poster, and another posts blatant mis-statements of the nature of the electorate.

To start with, a 15,000 winning margin is not a politician's nightmare - losing is the nightmare.

  8. Ratchadamri Blast Case Forwarded to DSI

    TAN Network

    UPDATE : 29 July 2010

Police have forwarded the Big C Ratchadamri bus stop bombing case to the Department of Special Investigation for further investigation with strong belief the incident is tied to other blasts.

National police chief's adviser Police General Panupong Singhara Na Ayutthaya disclosed this morning that the bomb attack at the bus stop in front of Big C Ratchadamri has been forwarded by deputy metropolitan police chief Police Major General Amnuay Nimmano to the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI.

Panupong stated that considerable progress has been made in the case thanks to surveillance camera footage.

Police have been able to draw ties between the blast and similar bombing incidents in the capital, including attacks on Kok Kram and Nang Loeng police stations.

Similar bomb-making techniques were cited as another strong indication of the attack's connection to past incidents.

Police will continue to investigate the Big C blast while the DSI is following up on the case's ties to other crimes.

  9. Big C blast linked to previous bomb attacks

BANGKOK, 29 July 2010 (NNT) – The Metropolitan Police Bureau has found evidence indicating that the recent blast in front of Big C Rajdamri in Bangkok is linked to several previous other bombing cases.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief Police Major-General Amnuay Nimmano revealed on Wednesday that the latest bomb that took place on Sunday night might be linked to the terrorist cases occurred during the anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) rally earlier this year.

He believed the series of crime including the latest were committed by the same group of suspects as the bomb wiring method and the explosive material used were similar.

The Metropolitan Police will pass the case to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) within the next few days because the existing evidence suggests they are terrorist-related.

  13. I believe his lawyers have appealed the decision of the court to confiscate his billions of Baht.

Yes, we'll hear the Supreme Court's decision soon, on August 11.

I wouldn't mind betting that he will get some if not all of it back

Given the strict criteria and guidelines for winning on appeal in a Supreme Court case, that's a risky wager.

I say he's out the 46 Billion Baht from losing on this appeal.

But that still leaves him with over 350 Billion Baht.

and do his time at home with an ankle bracelet on and then run for PM and sh*t it in again. Give it time.

That's much a more likely scenario. He's still got the vast resources to create turmoil and possibly even to the point he returns as you say. Hopefully, it doesn't. A thirty year prison sentence (from all the other pending cases) would go a long way in trying to turn the tide on corruption for this country. When he was PM, he was always on about being the first at something as a PM. Always shining the spotlight on his unprecedented status from a PM over this thing or that.

Well... Let him now be the first PM to ever serve a life sentence (he'd be 91 at the end of that stretch).

Let him set the precedent that corruption like his begets a three decade sentence and follow it up with anyone else that pulls his crap. See if that doesn't rattle some cages and begin to set this country on a proper path. Let him go down in history as the one that Thailand turned over a new leaf with.

  14. Udom Prongfa, personal legal adviser of the fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to file a suit against Prime Minister Abhisit and other 12 persons at Criminal Court.

Criminal Court rejects freelance reporters' suit against PM

must file a suit against the prime minister with the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Office, not the Criminal Court.

:cheesy: Another crackerjack lawyer from Team Thaksin.

Udom still ranks behind the pastry-box division lawyer duo on the Team's Top Buffoons List as they actually had to serve 6 months in prison for their shenanigans, and yet remarkably, upon release, one of them who surprisingly was not apparently disbarred, Phichit Chuenban, returned as a lawyer for Thaksin again last month when he was the one to submit the appeal against the Criminal Court's approval of the terrorism arrest warrant against Thaksin.

Still, Udom is well in the running for the Top 10 on the list of dozens as just last May he had struck out again in another of Thaksin's endeavors:

Suthep acquitted of libel suit filed by Thaksin

    The Nation

    May 21, 2010

The Criminal Court on Monday acquitted Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban of defamation charges over his remark that ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra hoped to return as president.

The court ruled that the defendant made a frank criticism with no intent to defame the plaintiff, thus the charge was groundless.

Udom Prongfa, authorised lawyer of Thaksin brought the libel suit against Suthep.

    ======================================================================================================

For someone who has 400 Billion Baht, Thaksin sure does seem to pick some of the cheesiest lawyers that money can buy. :cheesy:

btw, Amsterdam tops the List easily on just the sheer amount of money Thaksin has wasted on him and who hasn't done squat for his client and Noppadope is in a solid second place.

  15. Thaksin: a populist or an all powerful dictator?

    Tuesday, July 13, 2010

    Thailand Business News

Thaksin’s election, which some consider legitimate despite the buying of votes and the “grants” skillfully distributed (1 million THB per village) the day before the second election, would never have been accepted in a genuinely democratic country.

Of course corruption existed prior to Thaksin, but is that a reason for it to continue? Quite evidently Thailand is capable of progressing towards greater democracy, and the present system is in the process of changing towards more modernity as long as the old barons make way for the young. Of course the old guard hangs on and many of them try to make a democratic name for themselves.

Thaksin is often praised for having improved social matters in Thailand, but this is not true. He gave charity to the poorest and least educated. He promoted consumer loans (and not micro-loans for economic investments). Is that called “social”? A flat rate for all of 30 baht per visit to any hospital establishment is debatable. All public hospitals were free; it was simply to bring the private clinics to charge only 30 baht and for the state to cover the difference.

Thaksin is often praised for having improved social matters in Thailand, but this is not true. He gave charity to the poorest and least educated.

What else has he done for the people? Nothing. What he has mostly done is take care or his own businesses and abused his position to help make them prosper. During his term the value of “Shin Corp” increased four-fold and when part of it was sold off to this Singapore company “Temasek” and the accounts were rendered public, it was discovered that during Thaksin’s term “Shin Corp” had never paid any taxes.

It took for a judge to convict Thaksin and seize part of his assets before the “reds” started to regroup. On the run abroad to avoid having to serve a 2-year sentence for financial misdeeds in another case, Thaksin declared that there were 1 million red demonstrators. At the very height of the demonstration there were at most twenty thousand and they were being paid 500 baht per marching day. At the end there were no more than 3,000.

The reds’ claims were as legally unjustifiable as they were simple: dissolve the parliament, dismiss the government, Thaksin’s pardon and return to Thailand, general elections (rigged of course) for Thaksin to return to power, and a return to the 1997 constitution (to Thaksin’s advantage).

    The UDD’s failed uprising

The movement entitled UDD, “Union for Democracy and against Dictatorship”, misled the world press on the real objective for these political cowboys. Apart from a few very rare exceptions, the media was extremely naïve; had they taken a moment to look into the matter they would have rapidly realized that the UDD’s aim was to accede to power through the rural masses. The real meaning of “UDD” was “Union for Dictatorship and against Democracy”!

With Thaksin on the run, a handful of ambitious political pirates, including some of his earlier lieutenants, stepped in for him in Thailand and press-ganged the reds using entire families as human shields in the event of a military charge.

Just who are these come-what-may nutters encouraging thousands of innocent Thais from the provinces to come to be massacred with the sole goal of acceding to power? They began with brain-washing and emulation did the rest. How could one get the demonstrators on the street to understand that the red leaders’ aim was to take power and create a false republic / real dictatorship, while loud-speakers were pouring out their propaganda on the red “camps” 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, the red elite is busy working on taking over power and pursuing the good old Thai tradition filling ones own.

The latest months events went to their heads, causing them to lose common sense and good measure. To such an extent that even if they won, Thaksin, the initiator and instigator of this wasteful mess, would risk being overthrown by the new leaders of this anti-democratic uprising, now feeling legitimized because of their presence on the ground during the conflict. If victorious, in their thirst for power and money, the red leaders would be at each others throats.

Prime Minister Abhisit did everything in his power to avoid violence and maintain law and order, but these ignorant extremists failed to take up the offer – which in turn resulted in Veera (one of the red leader’s) to resign because of his acceptance of the gentleman’s agreement. The UDD had exceeding the point-of-no-return by repeatedly upping the stakes on the terms of the national reconciliation that the Prime Minister was proposing. Abhisit then had to withdraw his early election offer…he had conceded more than enough.

Sensing looming defeat, the red leaders resigned, abandoning their flock, but not without briefing them one last time: “1 liter of petrol per person multiplied by 1 million make 1 million liters of petrol…enough to set fire to the whole of Bangkok…” That’s the “political breed” that Thailand narrowly escaped. Luckily, not all of the 3,000 remaining demonstrators followed orders and consequently “only” 37 buildings burnt down that night in Bangkok.

    Terrorism, nevertheless.

Only Thaksin, on the run, along with his “generals” can bear the moral responsibility for this sacrifice and resulting damage. They should also have to face the penal responsibility facing the Thai courts, but also the International Tribunal in The Hague, in addition to Thaksin’s condemnation for his cleansing (quaintly named “war-on-drugs”). The least of things would be for any future would-be dictators to think twice before launching into such an enterprise.
