  1. ah cool Ill have a look round

Ill be staying at jalan ampang in Kl so hopeuflly there will be some choice. Hopefully Ill be able to get a decent sandwich....?

If you are staying at Jalan Ampang, you'd be close to KLCC (the twin towers). Lots of food choices, anything from rustic local at the food court (4th floor) to western fare (all around but mainly at the bottom level). Or take a cab to the Golden Triangle a few clicks away, (Lot 10, Starhill, Berjaya), You'd be spoilt for choice !

Actually on top floor of KLCC you have quite a few good restaurants too, and one of them is serving Malaysian food. The name of the place is Madam Kwan. I think it is a good way to get introduced to Malaysian food.

As for goign to Bukit Bintang, I would advise you to venture in Jalan Alor, the mecca of Chinese hawkers downtown. Quite an institution with all the Malaysian Chinese eateries there. Stroll down the street until you arrive near Nova hotel, and nearly opposite the hotel there si what used to be my fav place to get seafood. Can't remember the name, but all 3 restaurants side by side serve the same food.

And besides, after eating, you can walk back to Changkat Bukit Bintang and hit the clubs and pubs there! The cheapest pub is Bar Ceylon. The trendy places are 21, Envie and Elixir. Don't go to Gypsies (unless you are interested ph34r.gif ) , it is more of a hookers' place (as are a few other places downtown, including Hard Rock Cafe)

  2. Check what the local laws say about debt prescribing. In my home country if you owe anybody any money and they don't take steps to recover it; that debt prescribes after three years. They have to prove they contacted you to recover debt and that you received notices.

    Debt cannot be outstanding indefinitely.

Well it is is in French, but that is an official government website: http://www.minefi.go...ption_dette.htm

They say 5 years for rents and 5 years for electricity.

I guess that settles it then, unless it is a possibility to transfer the debt to a private creditor company.

Same laws applies to them. Actually there is even a decree explaining how these agencies can be contracted and what they can do.

  3. The creditors send out a small notice in local papers in the area where he had his last known address.

    In which country? blink.gif

Because the only notice I usually in French newspaper with names on them are obituaries... ph34r.gif

Has been done for as long as I can remember in the Scandinavian countries.

These notices will NOT state what it is about, but only this or that person should please contact this or that office.

I think it was last year (or earlier this year) Bangkok Post actually had one litle notice from a creditor company in Norway, where they wanted to get hold of Norwegian bloke, last address Pattaya.

I am pretty sure that somebody doing that in France could well be sued for defamation and/or harassment.

  5. Parking fines were most probably handed by the City police, which is not the National Police, so you can pretty much forget about it.

Speeding tickets, well, a different matter since they are kept on your record and if you go back to France one day and the cops ask you for your driving license they might find you owe money to the state. And get you to pay for them, or give a legit address where they can force you to pay.

If you are not a French national and/or have no permanent address in France you can forget about it.

As for the deposit, you'd have better dealt with the landlord before hand. I don't get why it would have taken one month to get your deposit back btw. The use is to visit the apartment before handling back the keys, and if everything is fine he hands you back your deposit by cheque. No cheque = no return of the keys, you can always tell them to keep a part of it for the power bill based on your previous bills, and that would have been settled.

  6. Repose en paix, Rest in Peace.

This story has been touching me deeply for some obvious reasons. We were of the same age, and my twins are 4 yo and I have lived in terror in Beijing for 2 years and a half because we had to live in a high rise apartment there. I hope whatever there is after, if there is, they are now together...

Naam, my sincere condolences to your wife and you for your loss. I know words don't mean much, but my thoughts are with you.

  7. Where will you stay and what are you looking for eating?

If you want to eat like locals, hit any local hawker centers (open food court) and try what looks god to you. The hawkers centers are mostly serving local Chinese food, which in my opinion is really really good.

In the morni\ng you could try some roti canai, or if you prefer something sweet, roti pisang (banana thin pancake), and some Kopi-o (sweet coffee). You should also try the Teh Tarik (milk "pulled" tea).

If you can take spicy food, give a try to Beef Rendang, Nasi Goreng Kampung (village fried rice), Laksa... These are Malay food.

And last but not least, depending where you are, you shoudl try the Bah Ku Teh (Google it).

But again, if you end up in a city center, you msot probably be spoiled for choice with local and non local restaurant...

  8. I coincidently spend the weekend with a friend who is using StrongVPN. He told me he had a maximum on number of items per month he could switch IP addresses (like 20 times?)

We compared our experiences (mine with Witopia, him with strongVPN). At the end of the day, he decided to give a try to the one I have been using since he can switch whenever he wants and now can also use French, Belgium, Holland IPs or Malaysian gateways.

I should have checked earlier about the French and Malaysian being available, since as we have something to BBC player in Frogland, and MS office, Windows and all other software are really cheaper in KL, but you need to activate them from Malaysia, hence the interest of the Malaysian IP!

  9. I agree with you on the 15baht fare for the 30km journey (with no train change). It's dirt cheap. In comparison, KLIA Transit 'commuter train' in Kuala Lumpur requires one to take a train to, say, Putrajaya (RM6+), then alight there, buy another ticket to KL Sentral (RM9+) and wait for another train (20 minutes) to save 50% of the RM35 express fare. That's for a journey of 75km. Therefore km-by-km, Suvarnabhumi's airport link is far cheaper. In Thailand it's state-run whereas in Kuala Lumpur, it's state-crony-run. :-D

Last time I checked people travelling on such a tight budget that they would do that to save RM15 on a trip to the airport were not taking the train, but the RM9 bus to LCCT ;)

There is no train from LCCT !! You can catch a bus to KL Sentral for RM8 or from KLIA RM10

Well I think I mentioned a bus to LCCT, not a train... Let me make it clearer: if people are on such a tighe budget that they have to save 15RM on the transportation to the aiport, they most probably travel by Air Asia and then don't go to KLIA but to LCCT (or to Subang if they use Firefly)

  10. Then again maybe both MalaysianVisa.com and EnglishVisa.com are both full of whingey expats complaining about that very same thing, has anyone checked?

Don't know about the second one wink.gif, but you are quite right about the first one (only difference is that it was on a smaller scale than here, and over 5 years ago,

  11. I have been using Witopia for 2 years + (http://www.witopia.net/welcome.php). That was the most reliable one for me when living in China, thanks to their SSL/PPTP combo.

I also liekd the fact I could choose among pleny of possible IPs in HK, UK and US. You can even get the software to scan all UK possible IPs and choose the most reliable one

  12. Seriously, why is Thailand so terrible at getting things done on time and getting them done right? Is it the corruption?

Regarding the airport link, I heard from what I think are reputable sources (but I can't guarantee they were right), that a major reason of the delay was that the contract for the railways was asking for the contractor to be in charge of renting or buying the lands on which the railways was passing through. Which led to complications as the landlords were not quite ready to let the land go at low prices...

I would not be surprised it is true since I replied to a tender from Airports not long ago for installing equipments, and they were also asking for s to take care of the land use.

  13. My only real complaint is that just like the BTS, there are almost no DOWN escalators: 100 plus steps from the platform to the street is not fun on old knees such as mine, nor would I want to have to carry a heavy suitcase such a long way down.

You just gave me a very good reason not to try it. No way I carry my 20kg suitcase such a long way down...

  15. What's more would you expect?? Come to Malaysia and compare, you will be disgusted and disappointed with what Malaysian railways has to offer.

While I do agree on Malaysian railways at a whole, the issue here is the Airport train. Of course the one in KL ain't that cheap (35RM, for about 80km distance), but from your experience, can I expect the same kind of ride?

  16. comparing with HongKong is utterly stupid. HK is a fast world country. Installing such massive elevated train as such is very appreciable and i'm sure Thai's will soon figure it out.

wait and see, we will start to enjoy this service very soon.

Then comparing to Malaysia might be more relevant. I had been using KLIA Xpress for 4 years at least twice a month, mostly on my back back to KL.

This coming Friday I wanted to try the Airport Link when coming back to Bangkok. But from what I read now, I am not so sure... even if just need to stop in Ramkhamhaeng

  17. We have over 20 different regional styles of pizza, some very unique

    Hawaiian? laugh.gif

See I am half Italian by descent, and in my home town you can get pizza anywhere everywhere (restaurant, on-the-go outlets, pizza trucks with wood fired ovens on the side of the road, etc.), some very original recipes too, but I would never argue with an Italian about pizza and what a real pizza is wink.gif (and not only because of the mafias, after all I am from French connection city ph34r.gif )

  18. Wolfie, Jimmy Wong and his daughter have very good reputations, and they are both still working on Soi 5. This article is four years old but someone I know went there recently.

Another one with a good rep is Lek New York, who has done a lot of VJs, etc. He used to have his studio upstairs inside the Lido cinema building, and this website looks current (just a guess of course):

    http://www.saklaitattoo.com/artist/

I had one done in Lek New York a year ago (White Tiger in front of a cave on the right shoulder) . It was the lady who did it. Very happy with the job she has done and would recommend them.

  19. Those of us who emjoy real Italian pizza are in the minority on Anglo-American-dominated tv.com, and that's fine, as always YMMV.

Thanks for the address, I really need to try them, as I am a member of the minority... smile.gif

Wish I had a wood fire oven in the garden here like back home, so to organize parties with home made pizza, with proper dough and carefully crafted sauce (slightly cooked beforehand, even if not all would agree on that)!
