  1. Dear Mistephenso

We will travel from Chiang Mai to Phayao and intend to stay in the The Win Hotel. As we are a group I would like to make a reservation.

Unfortunately I could not find (I googled: may be I did something not right) the Win Hotel.

Do you have any contact details of the Win Hotel?

Any contact information ist mostly welcome.

    Thank you very much.

    Best regards,

    Robert

The Win Hotel in the centre of Phayao is the best place to stay now (IMO)...

It's brand new, has air-con and internet connections and is not too expensive. You can get a basic room for 250 baht a night, or a larger room with air-con and internet for ~600/700 baht a night.

The hotel is bang in the centre of Phayao, just down a small Soi opposite the back of the department store. It's a big, bright yellow building, so you 'shouldn't' be able to miss it. The Gateway is a little tired now and there isn't much more choice around Phayao really.

    Hope this helps!?

    Hi Robert,

Sorry, I've only just seen your reply...

I had a look around on the internet (searching in Thai too) and you are correct, the hotel does not publish its number anywhere?? They are not even registered with the Thai 'Directory Enquiries' for reasons unknown to me. There are advertising boards in Phayao with the number, but that's not much help for anyone outside of Phayao!

    Anyway, their number is:

    +66(0)54-480333

If you want to see some pictures, you can check them out here: Win Hotel pics

    Have fun on your travels...!

  2. I guess I have a bad case of BO (bad odor for those who do not understand this abbreviation) with 99 reads and no posts about the situation there in Phayao/Dok kham tai. Guess you guys up north have no flooding problems where people can not go get food because the streets are so high with water and lowing so fast. Especially those posters in the Phayao area who did not give any feedback on since my post. "Thanks for the feedback"! I have the highest piece of land along my street and almost inside the house. I can just image the other folks in the Dok kham tai area (posters here), not saying anything. Wishing those having problems the best of luck, wishes and not being there and calling all the time from the USA to family, I would have appreciated any comments from the Phayao city area.

    WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's been raining heavily on and off for weeks, but I think Phayao has escaped the worst of it.... There hasn't been any bad flooding in Phayao (Ampur Muang) at all - only in the Dok Khamtai district. As I have no reason to go to Dok Khamtai, I couldn't really comment on the flooding there I'm afraid?!

I hope your house/land is OK now anyway? From what I can see here: News (Thai), or here: Blog, the flood waters have dropped to previous levels, with the 5th/6th of May being the worst.

And humble apologies for the lack of 'feedback' before now. Unfortunately, I don't have time to sit on here all day, every day.... ermm.gif

  3. Good luck and have fun on Sunday. Just make sure you have PLENTY of 20 baht notes in envelopes if you have to go through the '3 gates' on your Khan Maak parade?? I got mauled on my wedding day... smile.gif

Anyhow, I'm sure you'll have an awesome day whatever your plans!

  4. Object lesson number one: "Garbage in, garbage out." Most seemed to get that.

Object lesson number two: It is inconsiderate and irresponsible to start a topic and not follow up.

Object lesson number three: Paranoia and assuming the worst intent in other's words or actions is unflattering and sad. The world is not out to get you. It doesn't even know who you are.

Object lesson number five : Engage brain before writing any disrespectful drivel and stop yourself :D

    Another good example here.

One could huff and puff, and proclaim himself the victim of a slanderous slight. Then launch into an emotional and personal assault on the perpetrator, all the while proclaiming the need for respect, calm and understanding.

On the other hand, one could laugh, admire and bestow style points for the clever follow-on and dry humor. :)

    My preference is clear.

Alternatively, one could claim 'hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia' and say:

"Me no like - you no nice to me...!"

Would that cover most of the points above; without hurting people's feelings...?? blink.gif

  5. Hi,

I have a wedding to go to next week and want to pick up a new shirt and a pair of trousers. Normally, I would head over to Chiang Mai, but I don't really have time this weekend and Chiang Rai is half the distance...

Are there any decent department stores or shops that anyone can recommend please? The choice in Phayao is not great and I don't know Chiang Rai that well at all.

    Cheers,

    M

  6. Hi Ginoooo,

You can forget about using a '3G' dongle here in Phayao if you want an anything near decent internet connection... The infrastructure simply isn't here (and is not likely to be for some time). I can just about get 'edge' speeds through my mobile (which is 3G capable), but nothing more than that.

If you want a decent internet connection, you will need to fork out for a 'fixed' line connection. I use 3BB and have been very impressed so far - there have been the odd glitches, but (touch wood) nothing too serious, and there are various packages to choose from (depending on the speed you need and price you want to pay).

The other option is CAT telecom, but they weren't as good when I used them in our old house a couple of years ago...

    Cheers,

    M

  8. Kao Soi is traditionally a Northern dish - the only place I've had it in Bangkok is at the 'food court' in Central Lad Phrao. This was a while ago though?!

I now live in the north, and have a VERY nice Kao Soi shop just around the corner from my house. It's awesome with leg pork...!

In answer to the OP's question about the Thai on the menu; it simply says 'Kao Soi moo-bplah-gai'. That just translates to Kao Soi with pork, fish or chicken...

Good luck on your Kao Soi hunt

  9. My GF calls me Khun Mark and I call her Khun Jim

You call her Jim? I hope you get the tone correct on that word :)

(Check into the Thai language forum if you need some clarification...)

    Simon

LOL - I was thinking exactly the same thing!

That could be a bit embarrassing for your GF out in public with Thai friends if you're not careful...

  10. I enjoy reading and have a small eBook collection going on if people are interested!? Got fed up with trying to find decent 'real' books over here, so decided to invest....

I've got a BeBook Neo which uses Adobe Digital Editions, so all of my eBooks are in 'epub' format (i.e. not compatible with a Kindle). Anyway, PM me if you want a list of what I have available?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  11. Hi Ginoooo,

There's a good air-con shop on the main (Pahonyotin) road that runs through Phayao. It's between the Phayao Ram hospital and Pradtuu Chai junction on the same side as the Esso garage. Family run place and cheaper than the other shops in the Phayao area....

We've just bought 2 units for our new house here and will be purchasing another 2 very soon. Ended up going for Mitsubishi inverters, which seem very good so far and are extremely quiet! I'm not sure what you mean when you say an 'outside' air-con unit, but these come with the wall mounted unit inside with an external 'compressor' (if that's what you call it?) that sits outside.

You won't find a decent bed in Phayao though. I'm all for a comfy mattress and we picked a decent one up in Chiang Mai in the end - I'm sure you'd find something in Chiang Rai, just make sure you check about delivery prices unless you are transporting it yourself?!

    Cheers,

    Mike

  12. Only just seen this post, but I'm not far from Mae Chai (I think) - I assume you mean แม่ใจ (or 'mother heart' literally translated, which I would pronounce 'maair jai')...!?

Enough of the language lessons before you get bored though; I live in Phayao, about 20km south from there. I'm not that familiar with Mae Chai to be honest, but I know Phayao pretty well. Were you after anything in particular or just random farangs like me to hook up with for beers...? :)

Let me know if you do need help with anything and I will if I can!

  13. I guess I'll try and bring this back on topic....

    @cmjantje:

I would assume you are heading down 'Super Highway' #1 on your trip down to Pattaya? If so, I can recommend stopping in Kamphaeng Phet to break the trip nicely in two. The in-laws live there, so I know the town fairly well. The best hotel to stay at would be the Chakungrao Riverview Hotel (http://www.agoda.com/asia/thailand/kamphaengphet/chakungrao_riverview_hotel.html) - it's bang in the centre of town and, despite what the first 'review' says on Agoda, the river is about 250 metres opposite the front doors of the hotel...!?

Nakhon Sawan would be my next 'best' suggestion for a stopover, but it's about another hour's drive further on. Phitsanulok is a bit off the main highway (although admittedly not that far), but I would go for either Kamphaeng Phet or Nakhon Sawan so you don't need to go too far off track. I'm afraid my knowledge of Nakhon Sawan is very limited, but it's a fair size so you shouldn't have problems finding a decent hotel if you did decide to stop there?

I've driven the route a couple fo times, but personally prefer Cha-Am and Hua-Hin side myself. Maybe a suggestion for your next holiday!?

  14. Thanks kandahar and VF - yes, I'll be floating around on here in the future...

Will take a look at those links in a bit. Farangs are definitely a minority in Phayao, although it is good for getting stuck into the Thai 'way of life' I guess!?

  15. Although I've been lurking in the background on ThaiVisa for a while now, I thought I'd pop my posting 'cherry' with an easy reply here...

I'm about 90kms south of Chiang Rai in Phayao - that qualifies me as 'Further Out'.
