  1. Have you checked?

The photomail toolbar doesn't show up in Firefox, like a number of Yahoo! features that only work with IE based browsers :o but you can certainly view photomail with Firefox as that is my usual browser.

  2. Let me reword that last sentence. :o

For Yahoo! users wishing to download this new function for their Yahoo! account, you need to:

    • Be on a computer using Win2000/WinXP.
    • Use IE to access the download site.

The person at the other end doesn't have to be using IE and l doubt if it matters what version of Windows etc. they're using.

  3. Yahoo! have a new service available that lets you insert up to 300 photos into a single e-mail without having to send them as an attachment. Each thumbnail is only three to five kb so even if you send 300 photos, the inbox at the other end is unlikely to reject your mail because it's too big, (not so applicable to e-mail with large storage like Google of course).

I've only used it a couple of times and so far so good. It takes a little while to send the e-mail as the pictures are being stored by Yahoo! but the person at the other end gets to see the photos lots quicker. It saves having to resize photos for e-mailing.

    You can download here from:

    Yahoo!

NB: you need to have Win2000/WinXP and be using Internet Explorer.

  4. ORE, with Dtac pre-paid, the best cards l've found are the 400 baht ones that give you 50 days access. They can be hard to find as many small shops won't stock them due to the high price.

The one reliable place to get them is at the service counter of Tops supermarket branches.

I was offered a 500 baht card in one phone shop but strangely that was only good for 30 days. :o

  5. SaveFlights are very good. I used them recently for an Australian trip, very helpful, they reply to e-mails promptly, and prices were competitive. :D

I travelled on Malaysian Airlines for the first time, new planes with all the latest entertainment even in economy, good service, leaves Thai Airways for dead imo, and it was a much better price. I've even joined the MAS frequent flyer program as l think l will be using them again. :o

One warning however, and it's not about SaveFlights themselves.

If you book by credit card you use a company called Thai epay, who handle credit card payments for a number of Thai websites. I use separate disposable e-mail addresses for every company l deal with and the one l created just for Thai epay started receiving spam a month after l set it up, so if you are using a credit card do not give out your primary e-mail account to Thai epay unless you want to be spammed.

  6. Thanks again, your answers have given me something to go on when l venture out to get my old PC up and running again. :o

I'll check out the used stuff. If it's very cheap l might take a chance. All that superceded stuff has got to end up somewhere. Most of the computer places l've been to are happy to install stuff for you and get it up and running for little or no charge anyway.

The TV interest was more curiosity rather than needing that option.

    cheers

  7. Just delete them and while you're at it, take a look at the options in your e-mail account and learn how to set up filters to cut down on junk like that making it into your inbox in the first place.

There's a website l saw once where someguy carried out a correspondence with some of these scam artists, even meeting up in Nigeria with one of them, funny stuff.

  8. www.maxthon.com

While l prefer Firefox, Maxthon is also good. It uses the Internet Explorer engine but adds a lot more functionality such as tabbed browsing. Plenty of info on the site, lots better than using IE. You don't delete IE, you just have another browser option.

Give it a try, you will like it l think.

  9. I was interested in buying a Dell a while back but gave up. I ran into too many deadends when trying to contact them myself. :o

You do see a few used laptops for sale in some of the computer shops at Zeer Rangsit but maybe they're just ones people have sold up before going home. I've also seen a few in use in offices and at the local Honda dealer. I always thought it strange that Dell don't make an effort to sell to the public here, HP, Toshiba etc seem to have made a go of it.

  10. There should still be a few VHS recorders about. Places like Carrefour and Central still carry a couple of models, sometimes combined with a DVD/VCD player. I bought an LG VHS/VCD combo model last year at Carrefour.

If you have any electronic repair shops out your way try asking them if they have any VHS models in stock. Thai's don't use them anymore, prefering VCD. I'll still be using VHS for a while yet, l'm even bringing over one that l had in storage as DVD recording models are not what l'd call cheap just yet. I was in an electronics shop yesterday and the price range was 25,000-85,000 baht.

    Here's a selection starting from 20,000 baht.

  11. Thanks for all the replies. :D

The link to Radeon was useful. Looks like a Radeon 8500SE might work, discontinued but seems to be available locally and not so expensive.

I think a 64Mb card is what is in there at the moment but l don't have a hard copy of the original specs to check. :o I'll probably need to take it to a dealer to insert a card to check all the system details and see what is compatible. The system memory l think is PC133/256. SDRAM?

I do know that the mainboard is a Jetway Motherboard 867AS for which l have the user's manual. This is a link to the specs (l think) which will mean more to you than to me as l'm not a gamer and have never needed to know anything about this sort of hardware before. Any comments?

One other question. Would you contemplate buying a used card? I see plenty of used monitors etc. etc. at my local computer mall, the amazing Zeer Rangsit (it's gotta be the biggest IT Mall in Thailand) but l've never thought to enquire about internal parts. Worth looking at or avoid completely?

  12. I have a three year old computer which l'm shipping over here. Last time l tried to run it back home it wouldn't work but a friend who checked it out was able to get it working by swapping over the video display card with his.

The PC in question is either a 900Mhz or a 1.3Ghz model (not sure which) with 256RAM. It currently runs WinXP but l'm probably going to switch to a Linux OS, as a learning exercise as much as anything else.

    • Are video cards even worth trying to fix?
    • If l buy a new one, what brands should l be looking at in Thailand ?

The main uses for this PC which will be left upcountry as a second PC will be internet surfing, downloading photos and Word/Open Office. Any games played will likely be a few years old, certainly not the latest versions of Doom or whatever is cutting edge these days. Any ideas on what might be suitable fron this listing at www.famous.co.th?

I keep seeing cards with TV capability. What sort of TV reception do you get on these? Do you need to hook up the same sort of antenna as for a TV or is there some sort of built in antenna. The TV capability is not important, just wondering really.

  13. In two years, the only thing that didn't make it through the mail to me here was a large parcel of video cassettes. I sometimes wonder what they made of all those tapes of Aussie Rules games. :o

The postmaster was very helpful in trying to track down what happened to it. We were even allowed to go through the registers that listed all the incoming parcels for the past few months, to see if we could locate any reference to it having been received there. No luck, so maybe it never made it that far.

They're actually pretty good at our local post office. I like to use different stamps when l send mail home as l have friends who collect stamps. At Future Park you can only ever seem to get the same basic stamps every time but when l need to buy a new supply the local staff let me go behind the counter to see this guy who opens up a safe where he has albums which must have just about all the stamp issues from the last 5 years. He sits there while l make my selection. The local Tesco also had a stamp counter a while back and the guy there was also very helpful in letting me select whatever l wanted from all these albums that had stamps that weren't otherwise on display. :D

  14. apparently theres a sky train line being built out there at the minute....

I'll believe that when it happens. There have been various reports on extending the BTS out to the current airport (DM) and to Rangsit (Future Park) based on the remnants of the Hopewell project but it will probably be a few years before that happens.

Out Rangsit way on the Nakhon-Nayok Road there are buses that go as far as Khlong 5(?) such as the #538. That gets you to Victory Monument BTS in around an hour for about 20 baht, or you can change near Future Park for a bus that goes to Chatuchak MRT/Morchit BTS.

Most moo baans along Nakhon-Nayok Road are situated beside Rangsit Khlong so getting a motorcycle taxi to the main road is not usually a problem during the day. Late at night a taxi from Sukhumvit takes less than half an hour and costs 200-230 baht.

There are lots of houses being built out this way but if you don't mind renovating there are bargains to be had as older houses are very slow to sell. Lots of development also going on around Fashion Island/Safari World.

  15. Is there an area in Bangkok where l might find a bunch of shops selling used office furniture, filing cabinets etc?

Can't say l've ever noticed shops selling this sort of stuff but l suppose l haven't been looking before. What price reduction would l expect to find for modern used furniture compared to new? I ask that as sometimes used goods seem to sell for almost the same price as new in Thailand.

I know l could check out the local buy and sell magazines but l'd prefer to have a look around some shops with a range of items.

PS If l was looking for a good pair of used stereo speakers, JBL etc. would anyone have some suggestions where l should look for those as well.

  16. While politics may possibly be behind this raid, like penzman l also have a problem on the northern outskirts of Bangkok with one of these community stations. I like to listen to MCOT107.0 broadcasting from Bangkok for the ABC etc. news broadcasts but l can't anymore because there is some local community station broadcasting on almost the same frequency that comes blaring in over the top so you can't understand a word anymore.

Nothing wrong with having community stations but they need to find their own space on the dial. Government regulation of the media in Thailand is a touchy subject but there does need to be some central control over allocation of frequencies to enable everyone to listen to their choice of station.

  17. From The Nation 11.04.2005.

Editor responds: We apologise unreservedly for an editorial oversight that allowed Pattanadesh Asasappakij's Auto Talk column "Shedding light on flashing lights" to be published in the Auto Industry page of the Business Section in the March 31 edition of The Nation.

We neither condone nor approve of such views. It is our policy to maintain a high standard of journalistic quality and integrity.

For some reason the above response from the editor doesn't seem to have made it to the online edition of The Nation.

  18. so long as the actual meaning of the sentence is conveyed correctly what the h3ll does it matter if the grammar is wrong.

and why should we expect non-english speakers to have perfect english and get all upset when we find mistakes.

In the instance l mentioned, then it's pretty important to get the grammar right. Why go to all the time, trouble and expense of producing a full page newspaper advert, yet not go that little bit further to try and ensure that the audience it's aimed at will actually read it all the way through, rather than have their eyes glaze over after trying to read the first couple of paragraphs. It's just money down the drain otherwise.

  19. I think l've seen it mentioned on ThaiVisa elsewhere before, but those full page adverts in The Nation for The Bangkok Tourist Authority. :D Aimed at an English speaking readership yet almost every single sentence filled with errors and written in a very antiquated manner.

Why publish something like that without having a native speaker at least proof read it? Many people would be happy to do it for free yet for months they persisted with full page adverts that many readers would give up trying to read, even if the information provided might be of interest. :D

The Bangkok Post has lots of advertising supplements, e.g. some small company making widgets in Nakon Nowhere can inform us of the history of their enterprise in excellent English, so why can't The Bangkok Tourist Authority employ someone to edit their copy? :D

Lately the message must have got through a little, as the standard of grammar in their adverts has improved considerably. Still not perfect but somewhat more readable. I'm unsure if the current writer is a native English speaker, but it's apparent that it's not the same writer as of a couple of months back. :o

  20. It's service pack 3 for Microsoft .Net framework 1.0 only.

I think you're getting confused with Service Packs 1 + 2 for Windows, which covered a number of different parts of Windows, not just .Net framework.

Btw, it's been a while now since Windows Service Pack 2 came out. Maybe it's time you downloaded that, all the bugs should have been sorted by now if that's why you've been waiting so long.

  21. If you're using Internet Explorer try IE Options//Security and add the site to your trusted site list. Check also that you don't have any pop-up blocker settings affecting things and that you have cookies enabled..

If that doesn't help then maybe take a look at the settings in the Advanced tab next.

If you have no luck there then why not just email the webmaster at MLC with details of your browser settings and see what they have to say. As you're a customer you shouldn't have a problem getting a reply.

Alternatively you could always pm me your log-in details, l'll be happy to test it for you personally. :o
