  1. Where else in the region do they fingerprint tourist arrivals like this?

Presumably going to be checked against biometrics?

Do they even have automated readers yet? Doesn't Somchai still key the data in by hand. At least, once its done the whole system will be automated and less open to abuse.

They might even catch a few Thai criminals . kamnan po only hung out in his own house for 10 years. I am sure the other major criminals will just get caught at a border post.

    Cambodia and Malaysia at least.

Do they fingerprint in Malaysia? All arrivals?

    I don't remember that.

In 2011 I was in Malaysia with a Singapore grand prix tour. We stayed at the old Hyatt in JB in Malaysia just over the border and crossed back and forward every day, for five days.

On the second day I was singled out for finger printing because I did not look like the photo in my 2003 passport. I don't know what good that would have done, as my prints are not on record at home in Australia or anywhere else?

I used to travel to the US several times a year, but since they started the finger print nonsense I have not bothered, I decided to spend my dollars elsewhere. I probably give Thailand the flick as I live here now.

Maybe Malaysia are finger printing everyone, after the infamous aircraft disappearance.

  2. I am guessing that the verdict will be read late in the day. This will give the 'authorities' time organize for ant planned disturbance. Very unlikely to see a repeat of 2010. Both sides have learned from that. Let's hope some kind of compromise can be reached. The country simply cannot afford to let this impasse go on for much longer. There are those on this forum who I suspect would like to see another confrontation. I for one, do not. It is time for negotiation, not confrontation.

Oh my God! Even the ants are joining? I hope it's not the red ones, they really sting!ohmy.png

  3. I hate to disappoint the naysayers, but these types of promotions typically involve corporate sponsors and contributions from hotels, restaurants and other service sectors. For the Spice and Splash promotion there were large numbers of supporting businesses.

Unfortunately, the story posted has left out additional background information. I don't know if it was intentional or just the typical shoddy Thai style of reporting.

Further, it would appear to be a loss leader type of promotion as a part of the show, and would likely form part of the shows promotional budget. Other packages are offered from 1,000 to 4,000 baht. The article points out it is for domestic travel, therefore you would expect it to be mainly for Thais.

  4. Gotta love the Thai's...They have absolutely no problem asking "How much do you make?", " Nice car, how much did it cost you? Nice House, how much did you pay?" In the States we consider such questions RUDE!

But here we are in Thailand ....so gotta put aside our western ways (sometimes) as we are in Thailand! Seems to me that the Thai's are kinda like curious children sometimes not recognizing the rules of life or even thinking about it ....it might give them a headache...

    Oh Well

And do you think they answer truthfully? I have been in LOS for fifteen years, and can listen to a Thai or Issan conversation without difficulty. Some of the answers I have heard to these questions, from mine and others around her, are unbelievable, literally!

  5. The only way tourism will come back is if the government lowers the baht like the dollar, euro and pound did the last 2 years.. A retour flight from Europe cost already 40,000 baht and then getting 40-41 baht for 1 euro makes the holiday to expensive, same for dollar and pound. :annoyed:

Well now it may disappoint you to learn that the value of the Thai Baht is not solely determined by manipulation and whim of Thai government and financial institutions. Consider that Thailand is now the second largest economy in Southeast Asia, next to Indonesia. Consider that the GDP grew 21% in 2009 and 8% in 2010. Take a look at the great upswing in bond prices and the high growth of Thai exchange traded funds. The strength of the Baht is influenced by these things. Thailand is considered to be an emerging industrial nation and it is kicking-ass.

Or if you wish you can just fall back on the old favorite and blame us dam_n Yanks. The US Dollar Index is down 12.5% since June of last year and it is only looking as good as it is because it began to rally in the beginning of Sept. Dollar goes down and exchange rates weaken.

I do not like getting less bang for my buck either but whatyagonna do? Tell them they should stop with all the automotive and electronics and sell only rice, textiles and tours? :wai:

Isn't the issue here, about how the Thai government would devalue its currency?

Surely no one is suggesting, after all the pain the country suffered in the late 90's, that they would legislate to turn back the hands of time, and move to a managed or fixed regime.

Like Australia (my home country) it is supply and demand that dictates the exchange rate in a floating currency. At the moment there is much less demand for the euro, dollar and pound and more demand for emerging economies currencies. The BOT could sell the baht down but that would be highly unlikely, only have short term results, and perhaps even be irresponsible.

Sorry guys you're whinging about the wrong government, write to your own governments and tell them to get their sh-t sorted then your currencies will resurge against the baht.

Three years ago I was getting 50c Aussie against the US dollar, a couple of months ago it reached 1.10 thats the markets. In Australia, we are lucky we have a big country with a lot of stuff in the ground.biggrin.gif

  6. I found some information you might share with your spouse/girlfriend/mother-in-law. These are simple informational pieces about flooding in Thailand, why it happens in the Thai context, how it's gotten rid of, and steps one can take to de-stress, filter information from TV, radio and other channels, and think clearly about what to do, and prepare the right response for your area. They are short (less than 5 minutes each) and concise and in Thai language with English subtitles. I wish these were available two weeks ago before the panic began!!

Thank you. After watching this video, I am now clear on what's going on. Bangkok is being attacked by 50 million blue (and white) whales.

What a cover up. No wonder the Government is reluctant to give information. Run for your lives! ohmy.gif

  7. But it wont affect tourism!blink.gif

Dropping friends off at the airport 3 hours ago, the car park was full, as were all the roads leading in and out of the terminal and car park (used as parking lots). After a senior security officer allowed one of his mates into the car park he told me the car park was full and to go to the long term park and catch a bus back.

Quite a round trip. Of course when I arrived at the long term car park, I was told it was full.

The cronies of the AOT get to park above water level, while customers get turned away.

I understand that these are troubling times, and there is great hardship, but this situation is quite ridiculous.

The haves and the have nots, an interesting contrast.

  8. I have spent most of my life involved in advertising and marketing, much of the time in similar campaigns to the one mentioned in the story. Some worked and some didn't.

I am not sure who TAT is marketing to with this campaign, or how it will take shape, so it is a bit difficult to have an opinion either way at this stage.

I did like the Amazing Thailand campaign but thought it was under-utilised by the industry as a whole. More attention needs to be given to fostering ownership of the campaign by the tourism industry.

In terms of a slogan "Miracle Thailand" does not make sense. "Miraculous Thailand" perhaps?

Anyway I am sure the actual pitch to the government was much more detailed than this news grab.
