Straight from the horses mouth...mind you, my son has never lived in the UK....and he is British by descent. If he has his name on a tabien bahhn in thailand, then he will get a letter in the post by default at his conscription date, although I've read if he's not living in Thailand, then can get a waiver from the Thai embassy BEFOREHAND (i.e don't leave it to the last minute). Not sure whether it would satisfy the UK forces, but since there are a lot of applications for entering the service due to limited prospects due to covid, then they are taking on only 1st British Nationalities.

Thank you for your email dated the 18th January 2021.

I’m pleased to hear that your son is interested in joining the Royal Navy!

I can confirm that due to the large amount of applications received, we are currently only accepting applications from applicants who hold British nationality. Dual nationals are able to apply if they hold British as their first nationality.

This applies to the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines and we do not have a time frame as to when these positions will reopen for Commonwealth applicants and dual nationals who do not hold British as a first nationality.

We are therefore advising those potential applicants to keep an eye on our website below in order to keep updated with any changes. Once positions reopen the website will be updated accordingly. You can then submit an expression of interest for your chosen role providing you are still interested in joining and meet the basic eligibility criteria.

    https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/careers/joining/commonwealth-and-non-british

We are also advising candidates not to travel to the UK unless they are advised to do so by the recruitment team, you can find more guidance by using our website above.

    Kind regards,

After reading this I checked army, navy, and RAF eligibility and they are all different so I'm hoping for my younger stepson he can follow his brother, the RAF just says dual nationality no mention of conscription, here's hoping?

If he has Thai citizenship, he will not get in the British forces without a waiver from the Thai army/government, or of course if he is exempted post-lottery. British MoD are pretty hot on this now, having had issues in the past with previous states that observe national service where conscripts have joined a foreign force. Badgered AFCO here for 12 months and took it right up the COCommand.

Not true, my stepson came to uk in 2011 has Thai/British passport and is now in his 3rd year serving in the RAF,

  3. my wife and stepson already have uk passports but we didnt bother with the soon to be 14yr old stepson (financial reasons at the time) but now my wife has got it into her head that we should apply for his uk citizenship now rather than leave it until he is old enough to decide what he actually wants to do, can anyone shed some light on it, are we allowed to do this, will he have to give up any of his other passports etc???

  4. wife and son applied 9th sept so posted on the 10th via checking agency, recieved letter this morning but date on it was 7th oct, so just short of a month for decision. next step ceremony and then passport.

  5. Yeah however I think this is more of a formality. Even a brit born in this country has to now have an interview for first passport. So plane sailing really.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

my wife has just applied for hers earlier this month can i ask how long yours has taken just for a rough guide please?

  6. If asking about the passport interview after being granted citizenship, it shouldn't take longer than 6 weeks to get one; but this obviously depends upon demand.

If asking about the processing time for the actual citizenship application, that is difficult to say; and other's experience is not really a useful guide.

This is because they often make further enquiries and take up references, and individual processing times can depend on how long they have to wait to receive replies to these.

    Thanks 7by7,

We have our citizenship meeting with the council on Oct 8th and I've just booked the return flights for Feb 27th. Hopefully that will be long enough to get the citizenship and passport.

    4.5 months, fingers crossed........... ;-)

as i said we had our meeting with checking service yesterday, she told us she is telling everyone around 3 mths before we get reply but she also said because of the new rules coming in next month they are fully booked now until the end of october so it may take a bit longer as everyone wants to put in before that date?

  7. I'd also be interested in knowing how long passport applications take from start to finish. Can we add that to this thread or is there one existing already?

    From British citizenship basics

This can be a lengthy process. The naturalisation application may take at least 3 months to be decided, possibly 6 or even longer. Once naturalised you may have to wait up to three months for a citizenship ceremony, though usually less, and then up to 6 weeks for a passport interview.

Hi 7by7 thanks for the response - excellent as usual ;-) I know the recommended time, but I was looking for recent experiences of applications. From the little I've read recently it would appear that the citizenship has been taking a lot less than 6 months but those posts were two or three months old or more, hence my question.

a friend of ours got hers about a month or so back, and hers took only 6wks from form going in at checking centre to her having ceremony at the same place, my wife and kid are putting their forms in this afternoon at the same place so hopefully we will be as quick???

  8. hi due to the changes due in october weve decided to apply for my wifes citizenship now as she has been here 3yrs middle of this month, my question is this, like i say she came on 16th aug 2010 and her 2 boys came on 11th june 2011, now we know she has every right to apply but can anyone please explain about the boys because they have only been here just over 2yrs, but they did get ilr same time as their mum so does the same apply to citizenship or do they have to wait the 3yrs??? thanks in advance for any of you knowlegable members advice.

  9. I have my mother in law here at present she came in june and will return in october, we had no probs getting her a visa although we had to get someone in thailand to do it for us because of work commitments, i must say she has nothing in thailand, no house, no land, no job etc, and the only reason we could give for her return was her son and daughter and 3 grand children still over there, and her other daughter and 2 grand kids over here, so in my letter i played on the fact that because of work we couldnt possibly get over to see her and for the reason of future visits to the uk she would not jeapordise this by not returning to thailand after her stay here, worked for us??

  10. surely they must understand how awkward it is for my wife to go pick her up, i cant get my wife a return from uk because her mum wouldnt be on the same flight back. the only other way to do it is my wife a single to bkk then 2 returns from bkk then my wife a single from bkk when she takes her mum back home, and why is returns so much more expensive if from bkk then they are from LHR?

  11. Hi, just asking for anyones experiences in the past, we are awaiting result of my wifes mothers family visit visa application and looking at flights incase she gets it approved. as she wont fly alone my wife will go get her and return her at the end of her stay here and ive found the best and cheapest way to do it is for my wife to go on a single and get 2 singles back, what im asking is will there be problems at immigration in uk even if she explained it is down to cost and her mother may want to go home if she cannot acclimatise over here, thanks for any replies.

  12. When we brought my wifes 2 sons over in 2011 my wife went as sponsor but then we were advised to change it and i went as sponsor by the agent we used in thailand, if it would help i would show you a copy of the letter?, i didnt sign the form though because we were both here in the uk and had to use an agent as i say so they did the form for us.

  13. Good Luck to all you applying for ILR, I will be in the same Situation in September, Has anyone thought about making an appointment for the same day service and getting to know that day, I know it costs more, but least you get to know that day and saves on the stress of waiting.

I Am sure there will be a few People on the forum submitting there applications very soon , Can you share any Tips on getting the perfect application,

    Merry Xmas

    Malc

In my opinion there is no stress in waiting and if you are in no rush to travel anywhere and all your paperwork over the last 2yrs is in order why pay the extra on which in my opinion is already an over inflated price for what it is, i had to do wifes and 2 kids together so could not justify going on the day at the prices they are, i felt no stress because we are a genuine family, and if you are genuinely still together there is nothing at all to stress about, it is definately nothing like when we were waiting for the settlement visas.
