  1. The curve, notoriously dangerous especially in the rain, has been the site of many serious accidents resulting in injury and death over the years, they said.

so why have they not put crash barriers on the curve then????

    RIP

At the speed he was travelling the end result would be exactly the same.

If you want the 'wrapped in cotton wool '' approach to deal with all and sundry as it is in the west, you're living in the wrong country IMO. TIT and i enjoy living and driving here without all the bullsh-t. Its up to you...drive to suit the conditions and be alert at all times, drive defensively, anywhere you are, but especially so here in LOS

Look at the west, with all the stealthy 'big brother' approach to road safety and barriers and rules ad nauseum and strict policing and cotton wool syndrome...people still die in huge numbers,

Im' a fatalist and firmly believe that when your numbers up...your numbers up!! end of story...like this guy ..fate!

people who drive like this young guy did, anywhere in the world are dicing with death, and all the safety protection available wont change this. 'driver behavior ' is the cause, and this is where it has to change...but again TIT :realangry: so it wont...

  2. Someone that doesn't know what irony is

Here is a guy that died in accident after having spent his free time helping others, and you quibble about semantics? :redcard1:

Irony or not..it is another wasted life RIP..only a young man.

Sad fact is that this guy who spent a lot of time tending to others deaths and injuries, a guy who frequently got to see the result of many others mistakes on the roads , yet apparently never 'took on board '' these experiences to the extent that he clearly and sadly put himself in a situation where he was likely to become a victem and not the helper.

The situation he allowed himself to get into took his life. The old 'it wont happen to me' syndrome again.

A friend of mine [taxi driver] stopped after the crash and he said '' car was quick, quick!

That i think would be an understatement for sure.

  3. There is a new online health food store. Great selection. some things are available at Villa but some things are not and things I have no see elsewhere...

I ordered and was pleased I just picked it up in Kata and didn't have to pay for shipping or local delivery.

I got natural mosquito coils, sun dried tomato with no sugar, raw cacao..Himalayan sea salt...

organic soy sauce with no wheat....

These are all things I don't mind paying a little extra for.

I hardly think chemical sugar free food is a fad.

www.healthfoodthailand.com THey sponsor the health forum here too.

goodluck with your new eating habits. If you like wine too you can always find organic at Wine Connection. Some nice brands.

I've always eaten 'healthy natural foods' fruit, veges , grains etc, and low salt, low sugar intake and have benefitted immensely, but every body is different and there can not be any hard and fast rules on diet.

Very hard these days i admit, to buy any type of processed food that has not been overloaded with sugars, salts and a multitude of potentially toxic chemicals,..quite disgusting what they do to food at times and i am sure it has added imensely to the huge increase in ''controllable illnesses[ diabetes and many more.] So there are times that one has to buy , and pay a premium for the benefit of un adulterated food if this is what you want.

Please tell me more about 'himalayan sea salt' is this just a play on words or is it ancient ocean salt deposits there? Thanks M/M..Also ,is it iodised please?

Lack of iodine has been a major issue in using uniodised salt.

  4. Unfortunately not new; burglaries with this MO have been happening occasionally in the Kata/Chalong/Nai Harn/Rawai areas to my knowledge since 2002.

Always cash, small valuable items, watches, camera, etc missing; occupants always sleep through the whole burglary - I am certain it's the same team every time.

I have heard of at least three cases, one involved a friend of mine who also had a large dog in the house at the time which did not wake up or bark; so it must have been some kind of disabling gas.

it is impossible to put gas into home through the A/C

It has been explained by many...do you not read previous posts?

An AC unit outside a house is a sealed unit. You cannot put anything into it which could possibly enter the room the inside unit is in. It is simply a heat exchanger. Sorry for your loss but would look elsewhere for the cause of you not hearing the burglary

Air Conditioning units recycle the air in the room they do not draw air from outside.

So its not possible, they would have to be in the room with you wearing gas masks

Even if they did feel groggy when they woke up

How do you put something into the A/C from outside the home?

    You can not :jap: ..

Wow, if it were true...wouldn't 'the guns under the pillow'' crew be beside themselves..

  5. Mind you I think Phuket made a big mistake many years ago putting the roads right in front of the beaches. I think it works much better in Samui where they are 100m back.

There used to be a school where Club Med is now but it was moved up the road. I think that Club Meds lease is coming up soon. I dont know whether it is still with MLT but at least they wont be able to build high rises there. Hopefully it will stay as it is or something similar. I fear the beach is so nice that someone is going to feel compelled to spoil it.

12 meters/4 storys on 70% of the land is legal.

Club Med is on 12-15% of the land and few buildings high, so I still think Club Med is a blessing for Kata Beach:)

i agree that Club Med is indeed a blessing for Kata beach and i for one hope against hope that the situation stays as it is...but TIT

I bet you what ever you like that many greedy eyes have been ,and still are on the remaining available 55% unbuilt land to bring up to the legal 70%.

Then of course the ''baht under the table'' agreement to use all the remaining land as well and build over the 4 story limit..

Oceanside land such as this can only appreciate immensely over time and sadly the scenario i present is only a matter of when, not if!! :annoyed:

  6. On the west coast half of the year the beaches are no go areas and the onshore winds make living by the beach a pain.

I live by the beach. I love it. No pain. If you dont like the sea or beach, perhaps better somwhere else.

Kata beach sunchairs are120% rented out 150 days a year, 50% 180 days a year.

Before 8am there are 30-50 farang (mostly expats) and tai enjoying the beach 350 days a year, and after 5 pm its 100-500 farang and thai enjoing the beach 350 days a year. Ever been here?

I live also Kata beach on Phuket, south of Karon now 5 years and also love the beach.

The figures you quote above tell me that you must live at another Kata beach somewhere else in the world, or do you you work for TAT?

I thought only they come out with such inflated stats.:whistling:

Sure a lot of us walk the beach,Am and PM but 100-500 @ 350 days a year, sorry bud, no way in the world [90-120 days high season yes]

And 50% beachchair occupancy for 180 days low season???:D Surely you jest/yes!

  7. Look for Tri Trang Beach, south of Patong beach and up and over a small hill.

Perfect all year, but magic now [low season ] as it is north facing and well protected from wind and is flat as the pancake, so great for kids

Has toilets, a few eateries and NO hawkers , NO JETSKI"S!!! and is the cleanest beach [litterwise] that i have seen here..a few people cleaning up even leaves on the ground, and are real proud of it obviously!

Also is surrounded a hundred or so mters out by a floating rope so if you are out of depth [or energy] can grab a hold.

The bottom is not so sandy, but a mix of coarse ground corals and stone, is different from the usual sandy beaches , but not unpleasant at all.

  8. To the OP..depends on what you define as decent to a large degree, everyone has a vastly different interpretation of decent as far as bars go, IMO..maybe you could be more specific in what you want to find.

  9. i heard the price is 260baht /hour...any more info on this

i realise that the tables are really good, but..?

Maybe will ensure only serious players, and not the drunken mob playing on basic bar type pool tables everywhere else

  10. As a parent looking for a school i have been informed, and i think also psrents with kids at the school have been informed.

Maybe the thread can be closed?

Do you really think thats its your call stevenl?

Its real easy if you have all the info that YOU need, just don't click on this thread. :)

    .

There is a thread running about a meet-up for "like-minded" individuals, which kinda infers that people that don't think in a certain way are not welcome.

Anybody else noticed this increased "I'm better than you attitude"? If so, any other examples/

Oh dear, oh dear, poor old karen, you tried so hard to make a problem out of petercallens simple, innocent desire to get a few likeminded people together for some social interaction, but had your sh-tstirring post deleted,so now under the guise of this one,you are trying again to make a big scene .There are a lot of very lonely , bored ,bitter and twisted expats with too much time on their hands huh!.You could have easily just turned up on Sunday, saw for yourself that you definately do not fit the easy going, likeminded request and gone home and sulked.Your excuse for not wanting to turn up was that ''there are too many rules etc...like the military !'' You deduce this from the fact that it was encouraging ''likeminded''people. How on earth did you come to that conclusion karen? IMO, from your posting sarcastic and often smarta-se posts, you already knew that you wern't in the same boat as the guys that were organising this get together..Yes?[ I personally know these people and they are as genuine and well meaning as you will find anywhere. Fact!]

I mentioned in another post that many on this forum are full of vitriol and nastiness and as with your headline, go take a look in a mirror k/b. You to a tee! Your inability to just let these people do their own thing, without your having to keep stirring , shows us all that your decision not to attend was the correct one! We are all, no doubt delighted that you will not be there to put a downer on the afternoon.Thank you for this rare display of consideration toward others.

PS Does n;t just being an expat by definition mean you are resident.? Maybe i'm wrong and if so please define a 'resident expat'..anybody

  12. My understanding, as a British citizen, is that my country doesn't extradite her citizens in cases where the death penalty could be applied. This is because we believe it to be barbaric and it must be said that, at present, it looks like our decision is right with our murder rate per capita standing being 46, whilst Thailand is at 14 and the US is at 24. But I digress.

So in England the punishment is less severe for murder, and that's the reason there's less cases of murder?

Umm... There's many a slip between a cup and a lip. That theory is so full of holes...I'll just digress.

Umm...England 46 Thailand 14 how does that make england have less? I"ll just digress myself...Do you not understand sarcasm by the way?

  13. Sorry s/b , but absolutely nothing to do with the 2007 1,2,go crash.

The same rules and regulations still apply now as they did then.

That [2007]was purely a result of pilot error..All airports have a set of criteria regards weather conditions and these have to be ,and are strictly adhered to.In conditions within the criteria a landing is classed as safely acheivable [this is a world wide system ,although each airport has its own individual set criteria depending on local geography and other factors].The diversion to Krabi simply meant that at the time of wanting to land at Phuket ,the safety criteria were not met so the plane HAD to divert elsewhere or if forecast is for improvement the aircraft may circle until criteria are met. This is part of international rules and regulations .Happens all over the world on a regular basis if criteria are not met.The 1,2,GO crash happened because of a lack of comunication and probable negligence between the two pilots in a situation of possible wind shear, where a competent crew would not have crashed.Weather conditions were not perfect at the time but were within the set limits, and should have been easily coped with by a professional crew who are extensively trained for all adverse conditions.

  14. If the 900 baht bus ticket hurts.. Wait till he sees the 750 baht buger and fries on the menu !! :D

you obviously dont eat and drink in the 'norm' joints

  15. i have been lent a car by a mate who went back to UK for a short time.this has now become a 'longtime' because of personal issues for him.the car id due for re-registration next month.can i register it on his behalf without any authority from him?I have agreed to pay for it in return for using the car, no problems there, but would there be problems with the rego office? I have all relevant insurance papers and book so am hoping i can just pay as if its my car.
