It also shows how fundamentally different Asian and Western cultures and values are. This is something that a lot of farang posters overlook. You may be married to a Thai. You may have been living here for 20 years. But still, you grew up in a completely different society, with different morals, values and ethics. What's right for the goose may not be right for the gander. You may treat this country as your home. The Thais may treat you as one of them. But, you are and will always be a foreigner and trying to force your values and ethics down the Thai people's throat will merely make them resent you more.

I used to live and work in Thailand. It was a good party for a single man if you did not mind the down sides. But I noticed at the time how all my friends I worked with would leave. In fact, 95% of the guys who worked at my work place were gone after a decade. I am not kidding. When a guy would have kids, the man would almost always take them back to his home nation. That says a lot about Thailand and it is a big negative statement is it not.

Let us take one example here.

If you are a Thai, not even an immigrant, you can buy land America. You can buy land and own it 100%.

He can also get a green card which is permanent residence. using this, the same Thai can get citizenship in 3 years.

A Farang--derogatory name, cannot do any of this in Thailand.

Thais know their laws are stupid but they hold onto them.

Funny Farang telling us how kind some Thais are. Of course that is true. But the institution of discrimination against Farang is still there. Could you imagine how you would laugh had an American from the Old South defended the unfair laws of the 1960s by saying that many white people in the south are fair and kind? Yes--but the laws and institutions were not fair and kind. When you treat people unfairly based upon race, Nationality, sex, or class, you are a disease. You are part of the problems in this world and not part of the solutions.

If you do stay in Thailand, make friends in high places and you will be OK.

Cold is what cold is. If not dressed properly, a person who gets wet can die in windy conditions with temperatures at 50F which is well above freezing. 20 C with wind can be very cold in the right conditions. Thai people do dies in conditions that are well above freezing and we all would if not protected.

The sun reaches it farthest place north on June 21 and that is the longest sunlight day of the year in the entire Northern hemisphere. Also, the hottest day of the year for the northern hemisphere of course does not follow this date exactly. The average month for North America and Europe that is hottest is July. This is because the area can and does continue to warm as long as the sun's energy runs a major plus over the cooling of the night.

Of course the Southern Hemisphere--areas south of the equator have their coldest day do to the lack of daylight at the same time when it is hottest in the northern hemisphere. For those interested, it is not because of the distance of the sun to the earth but rather the angle of the sun hitting a tilted earth that causes the seasons. In fact, in the Northern hemisphere, the sun is farthest from the earth during summer.

Take your hand and tilt it 23%. Then look at a light hitting it and you will see how the directness of the sun hitting a tilted earth causes the peak heat periods for the northern hemisphere in summer but the peak period for the Southern hemisphere occurs exactly at the same time.

I used to live In Tokyo. That area, while hit hard by the Quake, is going to be OK if nothing else happens. The damage was NOT severe there.

Of course as you go up the coast 200 miles, the area has been hit hard.

There was a city built on flat ground in a V shape inland. The Tsunami hit the V and went inland and rose up killing thousands in the city.

The people only had 15 minutes from the time of the quake until the water hit.

The roads were already wrecked and so they were trapped most of them.

Over 10,000 in the one town are missing.

Likely, when we get more info, we will see huge death counts being given.

About the nuclear plants, we must hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

I have 12 years of living and working in Thailand.

Might I ask us all to separate the people of Thailand we meet from the obvious unfairness of the government laws.

Thai people are very very fair and just in dealing with Farangs. Sure, you will run into a jerk sometimes but not likely less often than you would in a city back in your home nation.

There is a class system here. The Australians and Yanks are not used to that because they do not have that in their own nations. But most nations do have that and so we see the boys from The UK being well aware of how to deal with it. That does not mean they like it but they do not fight it either.

My experience in life has taught me that home has a huge advantage for all of us should we choose to use it. When I live in the city where I was born, everyone treats me with a bit more respect than I get treated outside that area. So the Thais are NO different that way.

Where I worked in Thailand we found the turnover for Farang to be HUGE! Most people who come here leave after one or two years. In fact, more than half leave before one year is up. The disadvantage here are huge unless you happen to be in a unique spot. The pay is low. The language takes years to learn like any language. You cannot vote. You cannot own land. if you have children here, they will be Thai of course so you must go home if you want them to be your own nationality.

Will a farang be voted in as Governor of Bangkok like Arnold was voted in as Governor of California? NO

Will a Woman run the Parliament as Thatcher did in THE UK? NO

BUT--Idiots will not get your nation into wars every few years here either.

If you are a high tech worker, it is easier to work in other nations.

If you want to get rich, go to other nations.

If you like beautiful mountains and land, go go go.

However, if you love it in Thailand and stay out of trouble, you can live a good life.

I notice a lot of the people here are commenting on living here as a foreigner from the west. We all know most who come here leave in the first year. Most of my friends who got married also left. You cannot own a house here. You cannot get justice unless you have powerful Thais supporting you. All of this is true.

You cannot even get the equivalent of a green card here. We are all visitors while in Thailand.

The best thing any westerner can do if married and starting a family is to go some place else. Go home to you nation or go to another nation but do not stay in Thailand.
