  1. I have this 80's digital Citizen, with a scratched glass. Was hoping to get this glass replaced by someone who knows Citizen. The watch has a sentimental / emotional value to me, seeing it in good shape again would be very fulfilling.

Would the Soi 23 repair shop still be in business?

    Thanks.

What's the real advantage of an inverter

I have a new Daikin inverter type, two indoor units and one bigger outdoor unit. Couldn't be happier, I can not hear the outdoor unit running, even I'm standing next to it. Completely silent. Also a lot less power consumption than the old crap I had. Go for inverter, you won't be disappointed.

Q: What sort of bank would give money to a foreigner who works abroad, and allow him to send it out of the country without showing any collateral?

    A: A stupid bank.

    Well here's one; UOB

I'm already in talks with them. Also, who said no collateral? Maybe I have other properties that I offer as collateral?

The money is for purchasing a condo, not sending it abroad. BTW, I won't get access to the money, but bank agent will handle the check at Dept. of Land dept.

Thai banker told me last January in Pattaya that no foreigners can get a mortgage from any Thai bank in Thailand , strictly for Thai citizens only .  Don’t have a clue about the bank outside Thailand, I think it will be difficult because the bank will need a house based in the bank’s Country if asking for a mortgage  .

Okay, well he's not completely correct as I got an email back yesterday from UOB bank who said they do have foreign property loans, but have to submit a pile of papers. One of them is a "personal tax refund" form, which I do not have since I don't pay any tax anywhere. I have foreign friends in BKk who has borrowed money from UOB before, without WP, but I'd like other options than UOB.

The funds to buy a foreign title condo need to come from outside Thailand. Even if someone will lend you the money, you cant but a foreign title condo with that (borrowed inside Thailand) money.

Yup, aware of this but not a problem as you can borrow money in TH, send it to your EU bank, then send it back to a Thai bank with the note that it's for buying a condo. That's how I did on my previous purchase.

  6. Hi all,

What institution could do a property loan for a foreigner living in Thailand?

I had a smaller loan with MBK before, paid back early with no issues. They have since changed their rules and only do property refinancing now.

I work offshore so no WP in Thailand. Steady income to Bangkok Bank for 20 years, permanently employed, no credit issues with anybody ever, no current loans.

Why is it so hard to borrow a few million baht here when I have many millions coming in each year?

Thankful for any advice on this.

I always get mine done at Bumrungrad and it is hassle free. Got the noggie add on last time which was just an additional chest X-ray.

Ahh I should have done the noggie add on as well then... And the D&A, which is not a part of the OGUK at Bum.

Just saw a job opening that asked for OGUK with D&A test.

Dr Wattana also said he can't do shoulder measurement, that they don't have the tools for that. I explained to him the whole 'get out of chopper window'-thing, he said BMI should be enough.

Can you let me know how it pans out, i was thinking of bkk / ptty but will be in BKK early next week so Bumungrad might be the go...

    Thanks.

I would do yes, but I'm stuck here on the water in Brazil for now, going home just at the end of August so I'll sort it them. A report will follow.

Oh, and here's a thing: make sure "Bi-Deltoid Measurment" is included in the medical, it's basically shoulder width. Companies are asking for that these days, it's about fitting out thru that chopper window...

  10. Hi guys,

Advice please on doing the OGUK medical in BKK. Price and timeframe to get the papers.

A few years ago I did it at Samitivej, it cost 27k if I remember correctly, took forever to get the paperwork since they "had to send the methadone test away to be cleared".

I have a feeling the nice lady there added a WHOLE lot of extras to the list of that to test, I'm looking at having done a standard OGUK with no 'add ons'.

    Thanks!

  11. I'm looking now also..

I had been thinking to buy an older (2002-2006) BMW or Audi. Getting old I know, but I have found several on the internet sites with 50,000-110,000 km in the Bt 300K+. Now that I am about to buy, I've become nervous about buying a German car of this vintage.

My reasoning is/was that these were expensive here, although good quality. The owners had the means to maintain them and that sort of mileage indicate they were doing less than 10K a year on average.

So I began to think that a 2-3 year old Fiesta Sport or Suzuki Swift around Bt.350K+ would be more practical...Well, here is the problem. These cars were not expensive, so many many of them were bought by young men who live for their new car and the mileage is very high for their age. A few are out there with less than 20K but a lot are 50-90K!

I'm also looking at buying a 10 year old car (Benz SL), my reasoning is that this car won't lose much more value, if its taken care of. So the money I put in to it now, I can get maybe 80% of it back in a couple of years. Just gotta somehow be sure that the maintenance has been done, tricky.

  12. If you're in Bangkok you might want to visit he Classic Car show being held at Seacon Square Mall on Srinakarin Road. I think it is being held until 24 May but better check first. I don't know if any of the cars on show will be for sale but certainly would be a good place to ask around as to what your looking for. Good luck.

Oh thanks for the info, wish I was home now. But I'm stuck here on the rig until 29th, so I will miss it :-( Hopefully there will be another one in the future.

  13. Hi again guys,

Most of you will probably dislike the fact that I now found this 1985 Camaro IROZ-Z for sale. 5.7l engine (305 cui?) 800k baht, from a private seller.

I have had my girl calling the seller and asking a few things, and I am now suspecting that it was partially submerged during the flooding a few years back.

    I think this because:

    - Price. I saw two other repainted non Iroc's for sale in BKK, 1.3-1.5 mb. This seller said "you'll never find an IROC in BKK at this price"...

    - No stereo in it. (cos it was flooded, taken out and not replaced)

    - He said new upholstry, looks same as original upholstry. (are floor mats and door panels new too?)

    - Engine has been overhauled, some new chrome there too. (Kinda needs to be done to an engine that has been full of water, and who wants to see rusted chrome)

So, I'd like to ask how to find out if it is a flood victim? I'm thinking to peek under the door rubber seals, to spot a level. Also, smell but that would be a dead giveaway so he probably has that fixed by the new upholstry.

If the car was extensively overhauled after a flood, would it still be ok to own? The obvious thing I'm thinking about is trapped water inside the chassi. Does it matter that the water was river/rain water (fresh) and not ocean water?

Bottom line is that I still like this car, and can spend more on it to make it great, even after the things he replaced.

I don't want to ask him now about flood damage, as he seemed a bit annoyed last time she talked to him....maybe he's fed up with tyre kickers coming for a look and not buying it.

    What you all think?

    Thanks,

    Tom

  14. You didn't ask but do you know these cars? There really weren't any muscle cars from 1973 until about 1984. they improved through the last half of the 80's ending with the LT-1 GM engine.

A 350 or 365 horsepower 327 from 1962 had a 12:1 compression ratio. Those required premium fuel and something more like 9.5:1 will run hard on regular gas. Additionally those burned leaded fuel with the lead cooling and lubricating the valves and seats. When that lead went away the answer was hardened valves and valve seats. The heads are machined and the seats pressed in.

The cars also got very high rear differential ratios to try to meet the CAFE. This is why GM came out with the 6 speed for the LT-1 Corvettes and Camaros in the late 90's.

The good news is that engines and transmissions remained very interchangeable with only about 3 mounts to swap to swap around any engine. With a straight 6 the radiator bolted in front of the core support because the engine was long, and behind the core support for a V8 or V6. But they fit with only a need for a thicker radiator core to cool the large engines.

I have built so many of those cars I can't even remember. The first was a 1957 Chevy Sport Coupe which was nice, coupled with a wrecked 1962 Vette with a 365 HP 327 and a 4 speed. On that one the frame had to be drilled for the motor mounts due a change in 1958, but then they stayed the same for decades.

Good luck and have fun. If you have any questions PM me. American hot rods R us. smile.png

    Hello there and thanks,

No I don't really know these cars to be honest. When I was 11 years old in 1984, the C4 Corvette was my dream car, would be nice to own one now. I still love the "K.I.T.T.-looking" digital dash :-) I figured it would be fairly easy to find parts for the C4 from USA, and since it's not(?) a high tech car I could maybe get it serviced somewhere in BKK. That's the cruicial thing for me, I need to first find a V8 workshop in BKK before I buy.

I saw an early 80's Corvette for sale at 980k baht, it needs a lot of interior attention though. There are probably a 100 nicer and older muscle cars for sale, but I have set a budget to 1 million baht for now.

    Anyway, the search continues.
