  1. I have just been on line to an insurance agent to try and obtain a quote for personal possessions within the house I am renting. Firstly I have been told that they do not provide a "New for old" policy.

Secondly I have been told that I should also make sure that the house i am renting should be insured under building insurance by the owner. Because If it is not insured, then I am responsible for any damage occasioned to the house by fire earth quakes etc whilst I occupy the house as the tenant.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  2. Hi.

I drive a 3 litre pickup and have experienced squealing on my front tyres when cornering, even at low speed. The manufacturers guide for air pressure for theses goodyear tyres on 16 inch rims is 29/30 psi all round. When I visited my local Isuzu garage the so called "engineer" said that it should be 35 psi all round because the car is being driven in Thailand. So I am now somewhat bemused because the car is built in Thailand for use in Thailand. Then he went on to say that if I used nitrogen in the tyres it would save on tyre wear. Am I missing a vital point here. Any views or logical explanations would be most welcome.

In almost forty years of driving I have never heard of this innovation

Oh! just to let you know these are dual purpose tyres which came with the car from factory fit for use on or off road.

    Thanks

  3. Two suggestions: Try Siam City on the moat. Behind the shop itself is the service department. They seem to be able to order most repair parts. Or you could google whirlpool service centres in Thailand.

That is how obtained one or two repair items. Good luck.

  4. I should add that I do have a rough outlined plans, this being:

    1. Arrive in Thailand next summer

    2. Travel for a couple of months (see Cambodia and Vietnam)

    3. Get Ed Visa in C.Mai

    4. Learn Thai a few days/week

    5. Write part-time (creative writing)

    6. Volunteer teaching

    7. Maybe some part-time teaching work

    8. Make contacts and stay busy

One piece of advice is that you CANNOT work under any circumstances unless you have a work permit from the ministry of Interior. Officially you cannot even volunteer your services free of charge without a work permit.!! So my advice is to be careful what you do. But the forum has many topics on Visas etc and it would be prudent to read through this carefully. Then I suggest you log onto the Thai Embassy website in Bangkok and read up on all your requirements to stay here.

Good luck and the last thing I would say is do not take chances at volunteering or any short cuts. There are people who will do the dirty on you and inform immigration. Then it is a heavy fine and bye bye thailand.

  5. Is there anyone on this forum who can post a decent map of where this German restaurant is?G&M.I have heard good reports of the the food they serve and I want to buy some of the quality sausages they make.It is nearly impossible in Chaingmai to buy any sausages that are edible. Most are filled with rubbish. The Germans do know how to make good sausages.

This is a map in Thai but maybe you know this one and and judge this one to be indecent. Many have tried and failed to describe the whereabouts of GM while most never even attempt it. I've been a couple of times but starting from Doi Saket which is easier. You know his sausages are available at Rimping. I don't think they are as good as Sausage King's but no accounting for taste. Hope you'll post your opinion of them if you ever find the place. His Sunday buffet is very popular with the locals. Hope that link works. Sorry ,it doesn't. I'll try and find the one that does .

Did you forget to add he map?

  6. I just tried putting the 25th Jan Return 1 February. Outgoing flight 790 baht.....Return flight 5000 baht. Tried a variety of dates. Outgoing from 25th Jan all promotion price of around 700 baht. But return flights are all normal at around 3/500 baht. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.

I just checked On Jan.27 return Jan. 29 the cost was 790 baht a saving of 1,800 baht. I just put those dates in I am quite sure there are many dates open at that price.

    Wish I was going.:(

  7. Morality begins in the schools. And the Thai culture of not asking questions to those who are perceived to be "above them" is part of Thai culture. The editor of the Bangkok post posted an article some months ago, including how shamed he was at Thai culture of never being allowed to question those in charge including teachers , doctors etc etc. Why does Thailand persist in living in the dark ages and yet trying to be a major player in the currency market at the cost of the indigenous population and falling exports. I just see 1997 happening all over again.. This is no different to China in the 90's , currently the Celtic Tiger and dare I say it the USA who thought they were above regulation of banking regulation and through their arrogance and greed, brought the whole financial WORLD into chaos as we have today... No I am not bashing the USA but having studied the rise and fall of countries over the past 100 years and their GDP based upon greed by bank owners, governments and their total lack of concern for the public in their countries, I make my thoughts known......And now we have the Euro countries who have been self regulating without taking ownership and providing honest answers to the peoples of their countries, are heading for a serious fall. But Jo public is the one who is affected and those in power continue to draw their huge salaries and benefit from insider dealings, without any compassion for those unemployed or with mortgages and families.

    How sad!!!

It just keeps getting more insane..day by day...I shake my head also

  8. Absolutely right!!!!

After your last message on this subject, I visited the shop and the massage was brilliant and relaxing in nice clean rooms with AC. Highly recommended....I am not involved in the business of this establishment.....purely a satisfied customer.

As I wrote before on forum I think best massage, either oil massage or Thai massage, is at Maripaun Salon and Thai Traditional Massage on Maejo Road. They have showers, air-con and 3 excellent masseuses. Price for oil massage is 250 baht per hour. It is on left side Maejo road heading from CM to Maejo. 6.5 km from Rimping market at meechok Plaza. Just go to second traffic light, make u-turn and come back towards Chiang Mai. Shop is betweenr Wawee Cofee and Wang Buathong muban. There are signs out front. It is best to make appointment. Phone number is 0852849118.

  9. I live in Sansai and moved to a new location about 3 miles from my old dwelling. AIS reception was so bad in my new house that I could not make or receive calls. My 3G Airtime internet router would also only produce 40% of the reception I needed to run the TV and the internet.

Anyway I changed my cell phone provider to DTAC....not only excellent reception but also cheaper calls within Thailand. But do not use it for international calls.....extremely expensive.

True vision desk in Carrefours Sansai, tried to sell me a new internet package last week, but when I asked them about reception in the Mooban where I live, they said it would not work, but suggested I sign up and they would see about getting an engineer to try and make it work..rolleyes.gif...DOH!!!

True vision head office in SIAM Electrics also admitted that their TV package would work in Sansai, but the internet would not work, but that I should get my internet from another provider...and that was 18 months ago.

So they still have not bothered to open up this area to expand their business.

What a pity that they just do not learn.....or is it usual Thai laziness.

  10. There is a notary public on the 9th floor of Central Plaza in Kad suan kaew Road...his name is Pinyo Duangcham. He speaks excellent English and is also and Attorney At Law. He notarised my signature and it took about five minutes and cost 800 baht. It was accepted by the courts in UK.

    His phone number is 0818854034

    Good luck

  11. Forgive me for my limited knowledge on the types of visa that exist. I belived that you could have a retirement visa....a marriage visa.......a work visa....a mission ary visa.........an education visa etc According to the information I have, these are issued on a yearly extension if granted.

So why is there a need to do border runs every 90 days for 10 years, thus circumventing the system of obtaining genuine visas and thus avoiding the attention of immigration here in CM? Why not apply, for what I term a genuine visa or do you not qualify to be here legally.

    Just curious

  12. I can assure you that ifyou go to the Tourist Police or division 5, you will get excellent help. There is a Thai employee who is a lawyer and speaks about three language and wil tgake your statement and the police WILL investigate and I believe you will be successful.. If you need details please pm me.

  13. I'm on AIS 3G "stick" I'm in Doi Saket and I do think that AIS has improved somewhat, probably the loss of farangs:lol: When in CM I'm on 3G and when I travel I'm on edge at 236mb. I'm on an original plane that AIS does not offer any more but continues to honor. 30GB for 1500 bat per month.

    Hi,

Couldnt help see your statement "AIS honour 30gb for 1500 baht a month."

I am not surprised AIS honour that, as I pay 854 bhat for the 30gb.

    Billing Cycle

    Total Current Charge

    *Total Outstanding Balance

    (including previous balance)

    Current Due Date

    01/03/10 - 31/03/10

    854.93

    854.93

    26/04/10

I wish they did an unlimited option as I got stung 2000 baht Aug for going over my 30gb. No warning, you have exceeded your limit.

Any way just thought you should go and see them and ask them to honour the 854 baht per month..whistling.gif

    Boney

I have an AIS 3G wireless router and I pay 650 baht for unlimited use . The router cost me 3900 baht....so I do not know what you gentlemen are paying for. So I am unable to compare my router against your "stick"...is that some sort of aircard?>

    Regards

  14. Thank you all, whoever you are for reading this post. I Live in Chinag Mai and have done so fopr the past two years. Great place but sadly becoming another BKK. I have visited Amnat Charoean for the past 24 mopnths ...staying sometimes as long as 14 days at a time. During these visits I have only met one person who sadly died yesterday.

The more times I visit here...the more I value the real Thai way of life. But I have also noticed a huge change in this town and attitudes of the indigenous population.

I have seen one other Farang in a Black 4 door Toyota Pre runner (or 4 x 4) yesterday but common courtesy and respect prevented me from invading his space by stopping him to ask these questions. I have spoken with many of the local people and they say there are quite a few western people here. Whilst I am not looking for a heavy social life with western values, I wonder about social activity among western people here. Is there any golf activity, fishing or any other such meetings for a social gathering.

Apart from that, would anyone be so kind and take the time to give me their views on living here or in the vicinity. My wife hails from the vilage of Kokjao off the main road tbetwenn Amnat and Mukdahan.

I am here for a few days more and would welcome any help to my questions.

    Many thanks
