  1. I would advise your friend to put a complaint in writing to Vietnam Airlines to ask why was she denied boarding when Thai passport holders only need a valid passport for visits to Japan( no 6 month validity restrictions) and also seek compensation. Vietnam Airlines know the entry requirements for Thai passports to Japan but the check-in staff on the day look to have made a mistake.

  2. I don't have a recommendation but try the search box at the top right of the screen. You need a good trustworthy travel agent who knows what they are doing . People have recommended decent local agents on this forum before and the search should bring them up. I would try one of these and see what they offer. If you are happy keep your business with the same agent in the future and you should be treated as a valued customer.

  3. I visited last week and they have a lot of stock that nobody else is selling in CM. Lots of winter coats that are useless over here but if you are going somewhere cold you have a few more choices. Some decent bicycle stuff. Panniers , bags, clip on/off baskets that are pretty cool. Some of the clothing is good. Lightweight tents for hikers. All sorts of stuff. Lots of kids stuff. It's a decent shop.

  4. Did anyone notice the Red Arrows departing Chiang Mai this morning or arriving the the day before? It surprised me and then i remembered they are starting an asian tour and will do a full display at Hua Hin next month.

Whilst the Red Arrows were heading south and a world war two vintage C47 (DC3) was heading up to Chiang Mai on a historic flight from Bankstown Australia to Guilin China. Recreating the supply flights for the Flying Tigers in China.

  5. I don't know the stats so there is no substance behind this other than my own feelings and opinion. But is Thailand full of older farangs paying lots of money to local hospitals for healthcare when needed or is it full of farangs getting healthcare for free and not paying the bills? I was always under the impression if you had no money you get very little healthcare in Thailand. The hospitals want to get paid and don't do much until they know they will be paid. Hospital costs which once seems quite cheap seemed to have doubled over the past 5 o 10 years.

In my opinion Thai hospitals do very well out of the resident expats and retirees even basic stuff like dislocated shoulders , straight forward broken bones require 100,000's of baht to be treated. Some people are spending fortunes with the local private hospitals. It's a good earner for Thailand imo.

  6. For somebody only just making the 800k with a 50 baht exchange rate then then they will have a problem at 43 or lower. I am sure there will be people in this situation.

I don't think anybody will be shocked if it goes lower but it when it all doom and gloom things get oversold and it could be a great time to be buying pounds if you have a lot of THB.

I do remember a similar exchange rate in 93/94 but everything cost so much less. Restaurants, beer , food was easily half the price of now .

  7. How much is the hard drive worth? Not much really. Who would want to buy a scondhand 4 year old hard drive? I would be worried it's had heavy use and is not reliable so I wouldn't even buy it for 500 baht. So for example if you described it as personal goods valued at 500 baht how much tax could you possibly pay on that if the customs decided to apply tax. Very little.

Where will it be and how big is it?

Reading the full article those are the same questions I was thinking. The reporter just describes it as a "green space" that is set to become a park. Parks are very rare in CM so I would imagine it is worth adding its location into the article. Do Citylife use some kind of app that puts stories together automatically rather than by a human? This news piece just seems odd I doubt an "editor" has read it either. It is good news though that there will be another park in CM.

  9. It is quite odd that a TG 747 should be used for this trip to Hawaii. The Thai military have many many airliners for VIP use. They have a VIP A319 CJ with a 6500 mile range. They have just bought a huge A340 500 ultra long range jet (popular with Saudi royals) this can do BKK to NYC non stop. Plus they have 737's and And a brand new A320 which would need a fuel stop and the two new Sukhoi jets plus Embraer biz jets. The A310 was retired this year. Compare this with the U.K. Which has a 2 vintage 146 aircraft about 30 years old, probably scrapped now. A couple of 125's more than 30 years old, 8 seaters? And one new A330 tanker air refuelling jet which can be used for VIP duties by bolting in some business class style seats when required. It returns back to air to air refuelling when the VIP trip is over and costs 90,000 baht an hour to operate.

Hawaii is an exotic holiday destination for some people and there are many spare seats on a 747 for friends and family. This may have had something to do with it? Plus it makes you look important if you arrive in a 747. The USA (Air Force 1 which is a 747), Saudi / Qatar/ Kuwait  royals and Japanse Chinese Govt use 747's. You can make a statement with a 747.

850k maybe on the lowest end for finding a place in the 30 min range, but for 1 mill you get something in nearly perfect conditon 15 minutes from town.i found a place in hang dong today for that money...

Haha and so many said it couldn't be done, it would be unlivable, it will be awful, you need 1 rai for a home etc etc .

The house you found is nowhere near the city so doesn't meet the OP's criteria. If willing to live in the boonies it is possible to find something halfway decent for the specified budget, but the OP is specifically asking for something close to the city.

How far does 30 minutes by bike( I assumed a motorbike) take you? Quite far out if it is a motorcycle. That website also has a simple home located halfway between the iron bridge and the railway station for 750k , a townhouse halfway between Festival and Maejo for 800k maybe 5 km from the centre?

It is wise for the op to get a bit more cash.  The 1. 5 million home will be much better than the 800k , 2.5 mil better than the 1.5 mil.  That goes on and on whatever your budget is.

The house in the link which was found with 2 mins of searching. A simple house like that in village with 100 wah of land to make a nice garden , a bit of DIY and home improvements. If the location is ok It could be pleasant. I would be confident a better house than that can be found and for less if you spend some time looking on two wheels. An 850k home is never going to perfect but if that's all you have, its all you have.

If you go to ddproperty website and search Chiang Mai with a maximum 1 million price, a few places come up like the one above. Look at their locations and scout out those areas for yourself. It's best to deal direct with the seller plus there will be properties out there not on the website. Take a photo of everything you see for sale, even stuff you don't really like. Phone them later to get the price and build up your knowledge of the market. Your budget is really rock bottom for being close to the city and there will be some really miserable places that are not even worth considering but there will be some that will be at least semi pleasant. Its best not to be in a rush to buy and if you are ok putting in the effort going down every soi and lane you may find something you are happy with. Anything you are interested in visit in the evening as well to get feeling what it's like after dark.

I brought my beloved dog's ashes with me in my suitcase on my last trip from Australia. They were kept in a plain plastic container, and I didn't fill in any forms. No problem.

This is how I would do it also. Pack them up well , wrap the container in some clothes and put it all in cardboard box in my suitcase. Surely that is the "procedure" no form filling or declaring anything. The customs people are looking for a kilo of cocaine, meth, drugs whatever not ashes of a dog. The worst that could happen is somebody asks you what it is and you tell them.

  15. Sandgroper they do look like junk. I have no idea what they may be used for apart from some sort of background decoration for a resort or business? There are scrap yards all around Bangkok . It seems odd that a scrap dealer would buy these aircraft then transport them all the way to a field near Doi Saket. Somebody must have plans for them? Maybe it's temporary storage before they go somewhere else in Chiang Mai?

  16. You could take it to the small reservoir at the back of the 700 stadium. The only downside is at that reservoir or any pond or lake around CM local people like to hunt with homemade crossbows and it might not be long before it has been eaten. Maybe a temple with a pond in the grounds maybe a good choice?

  17. The expansion was planned when they built the airport.  An area roughly the same size as the current terminal building can be seen to the south west between the two runways. So from the get go BKK had plans to be twice as big as when it opened.  You can see the space waiting for a second terminal clearly from the observation area on the 6th floor.
