I teach online and get paid with PayPal. Fortunately it's a US acct. Goes to my US bank, then here to my LOS bank with Wise.

The online teaching company in their newsletter last week asked which other services we'd like to get paid with, I suspect that's related to this situation.

Hi, can I please ask for your advice: I'm getting ready to open a Wise account and link to my US bank. Should I use my US address or my Thai address when applying for the Wise account? Thank you for your assistance. BTW, I think we received the same newsletter from the same company. :)

  2. I have a retirement visa which expires May of 2022. I returned to the US three months ago in order to get vaccinated and see family. I am trying to return to Thailand and I am in the process of purchasing the required Covid-19 travel insurance in order the satisfy the Certificate of Entry requirements. The insurance application is asking me how long I would like the travel insurance for (0-3 months; 3-6 months, etc.). Of course, the price is more expensive the longer the duration. I purchased Covid-19 insurance in Thailand before I left for America so I am already insured in Thailand. Must the duration of the travel insurance match my retirement visa? Or can I just choose the shortest duration because I'm already insured in Thailand? Thank you!

  3. I am an American expat with a retirement via living in Thailand. I would like to live three months out of the year (April, May and June) in a different country. My criteria for this country are as follows: must have pleasant temperatures during these months in the 70's F (25C); it must have 90 day visas on arrival or available for purchase; cost of living must be comparable to Thailand or cheaper; flight duration no more than 6-7 hours one way. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

  4. I live in the Jed Yod neighborhood, too, and I've driven be Broken Eggs but never stopped. I'll check it out for sure now. Does anyone know what happened to Pizza 99? Any other decent restaurant suggestions in the Jed Yod area between the Superhighway and Canal Road? Across the street from the Trams Condo is an all you can eat restaurant for 120 baht. Decor and atmosphere is not its selling point but they grill pork and chicken.

  5. Hi, I'm a full-time English teacher here in Thailand just completing my first year. I would like to further my professional development as a teacher by attending workshops and seminars in Thailand. I was watching a Youtube clip of a professional teacher presenting a lecture called, "How to motivate low level students" at an event sponsored by Korea TESOL and it was excellent. Does anyone know if there are such things as, say, weekend seminars in Bangkok or other parts of Thailand taught by professionals in the field? Thank you.

  6. I like Do Dee Restaurant just outside the East Gate. Order their Do Dee Burger for 220 baht, very juicy and tasty and the fries are always piping hot and crispy.

East Gate? The only gate on the east side of the Old City is ThaPae gate. Is that what you mean?

Oops, sorry, I meant Chiang Mai gate (south side of moat). Doo Dee restaurant is located on Suriyawong Alley just south of Smith Residence on the right side of the street. Like I said, excellent Doo Dee cheeseburger!

  7. I will soon be visiting Little Saigon in Westminster, CA and gorging on delicious Vietnamese food - better than the food served in the real Saigon (what a disappointment!) Eat your hearts out!

Oooh, Westminster yes! Eat your heart out indeed. Been there!! My Vietnamese friends in the States agree that the Vietnamese food in America is actually better than back home, they tell me, ha...go figure.

  8. Chicog, sorry that I forgot to mention the price...55 baht for one sandwich. A British couple were looking at the menu outside when I was exiting the restaurant and I told them that the sandwich was worth ordering. A while later after doing some shopping I saw the same couple and they agreed that it was excellent, even though the woman said she was a vegetarian (they probably stuffed it with veggies for her). Enjoy!

  9. So I ordered their banh mi and I thought it was very tasty. In fact I ate one then ordered a second to go and ate that one later in the afternoon. The pork was tender and seasoned nicely and there was a nice crunch with the fresh veggies inside and a nice amount of cilantro which I really like. There was a little heat to it as well but definitely not over the top. The bread was what I would call a pastrami roll, and not a crispy baguette but it was warmed in a convection oven so there was a little crunch and then packaged in a nice individual paper bag. I was pleasantly surprised at the taste an texture of the entire sandwich, and though it wasn't what I remember eating in the Vietnamese areas in Los Angeles it was close enough to go back on a regular basis. I will also definitely go there for dinner soon as well!

  10. Does anyone know where in Chiang Mai I can buy treatment for eradicating "powder post beetles" which are destroying my bamboo furniture from the inside out? Perhaps you have had this problem, too? Any advice on how you overcame this nasty problem would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

  11. Like many of the other people who have posted in this thread, I also live near Maya Mall and I also wonder why there isn't even one single decent western restaurant in the complex. On the 3rd floor of Maya there seems to be an Iraqi restaurant under construction, but that's been going on for a while now with no visible signs of opening any time soon. Perhaps Maya is where the Mexican restaurant is going to open (that would be appropriate, wouldn't it?)? Will they have a Thai mariachi band strolling around serenading the diners? I've got a good name for the place, "Señor Somchai's". Anyone else have a creative name for a Mexican restaurant in Chiang Mai?

    ----------

I agree, I wish there was a Western restaurant at Maya. I think poor planning on the developers part with Nimmanhaman (sp) so close. I enjoy Thai/Asian food but wish a Dukes, Ragu or even a Mexican restaurant by their organization were there. Like northernjohn, I like Promenada Mall but I'm just not close to it. So I usually plan my trip there for my Western Food Fix. I'll often get there mid day and lunch at Dukes.....then see a movie and/or get a massage. Maybe take care of some bank business and definitely do some light shopping at Rimping. Then I'll either have an early dinner at Ragu or get one of their GREAT Western sandwiches to go! Baja Joe's will make it even better for a nice choice. As far as good names for a Mexican restaurant?

How about "TACO THAI, TING TONG TACO, ME LUB TACO'S LONG TIME or.......BUFFALO BURRITOS"........home of where the Buffalo really did die.......REALLY!!!

"Taco Thai" is awesome (there's a chain of fast food Mexican places on the west coast of the U.S. called Taco Time, ha).
