All you have to do is look through this and other threads, engines fragmenting, recalls, other failures, I call that a lemon, especially from the top manufacturer.

The old 250cc engine seems to be pretty rock solid (by all accounts) so something when wrong somewhere, hence "lemon". To me it sounds like a marketing led project anyway with only 286cc, but branded as a 300cc, so I do suspect those guys had a heavy hand in it.

We have seen people on this forum who have had very good service from their Honda Phantoms, my experience is the complete opposite and my friend's Phantom was little better. Having seen the engine stripped, I can see that many components are made right down to a price, making the bike fragile, gearbox too.

On the other hand my father owned an Austin Allegro which was later branded a "lemon", but he had 6 or 7 years of trouble free motoring. So the term is not totally definitive.

I hope your bike continues giving good service, this is my opinion, based on what I have read. Actually  "I have had worse bikes in the past 20yrs." isn't such a reassuring statement from your good self.

So after all that, what you are saying is no, you cannot point to anything which says this engine is a lemon then?

I am not looking to reassure, I am stating a fact.

The fact is, you dont have one, all your "evidence" is based on hearsay and anecdote at best, yet I do have one and have had zero issues. So try and stop trying to make yourself somehow important by having a comment on every thread going and come up with facts.

Austin Allegro... whats that got to do with anything?

From what I have read this 300 engine is a lemon by design, so if you want this bike, wait for a new engine, hopefully without inherent weaknesses.

That said, it is a Honda so least you can get it fixed, buy the Beama and you will need very deep pockets when it goes titzup..oh and lots of patients waiting for parts. I have watched a lot of long distance BMW trips on Youtube and lots of things go wrong when they get off the autobahns.

Remember too that this is a "cheapo" BMW and that means accountants involvement....aaaagh.... Remember the demise of that Merc reliability when the bean-counters stuck their noses in.

So this comparison between these two suspect bikes is a good one IMO, both nice bikes to park on the driveway.

So do you have links you can post as to where the 300 engine is a lemon, or is this as usual, just you saying something you cannot back up?

I have had mine 3yrs as a commuter and never had an issue, I have had worse bikes in the past 20yrs.

  3. KTM Jeff, you can obviously tell where his stock lies. Anyway, I could pull out plenty of Motorcyclist mags from Aus, US and GB that all say the Honda 300 isn't a bad bike at all. Like I said, now at over 30,000km and still no issues, after 20+yrs of riding and 7 bikes, I can honestly say it isn't the worst bike I have ever had. Its a bike that is designed for a certain budget, not to be wild like the KTM, not everyone wants that from a bike. I commute and if you want a bike for that this is good enough. If you want a bike to impress, dig deeper in your pockets and buy the Z3/MT03 or the KTM 390, better yet buy a bigger bike. I rode the Benny and didn't like it, just personal preference, same with the Z300. And that is all it really comes down to, saying that this bike is a disaster, just based on your own personal opinion, without actually owning one or riding one for a considerable amount of time, is just you trying to make yourself feel important.

  4. I have a CB, mine didn't get recalled. 2 and 1/2yrs in and 30,000km I have no problems with that little bike. It's all down to what you want your bike for and your expectations of the bike. I wanted something that is quick and nimble through traffic and can be fixed or serviced easily by me.

You might want yours for different reasons, this is good for what it is.

  5. I am glad you are ok mate, seems you would of certainly lost your winning smile if not for the full face. I was knocked off my bike on satdee in BKK, he side swiped me on Rama 9, which wasn't fun. But, like you I was wearing full gear and so, no injuries thank goodness. 10k damage to my bike and already fixed and back on the road, dude drove off so guessing no insurance. Is what it is.

    attachicon.gif1468039475484.png

note the tear in this jacket - the skin is exposed - not the kind of damage you want from protective clothing

Actually mate, no skin was exposed, no Ida where you got that from. I have zero injuries dispite sliding 30 feet. The Taichi brand seemed to work very well for a budget jacket bought for the reason of both safety and to stay cool.

  7. I have changed the air filter to a hurricane stainless steel, but I really don't think it's giving me much.

To answer the question, I got the EJK after the full system and air filter. The EJK is good, but really still in the process of test and adjust. The pre-sets where a big improvement in the mid-range, but I found myself thrashing it too much, to the point of filling it up every 3 days. At the min I have set to my mates settings from his CFR 250, which gives me more in the top end if needed.

As for changing, like I say, 1 more year then I am thinking of getting the new SV650, figure it should of ironed out the new creases by then

  8. Hi all, haven't been on this topic for a while so Just thought I would give you an update on how this little bike is going after 2yrs and after this amount of mileage.

I have had my bike now for a little under two years and I have still had no problems, even after a small(ish) crash. I service every 3000km and I have now done 27500km to date, mainly travelling to and from work and one or two little day trips normally of about 250km.

This bike has bedded in well and I found it go smoother over time too, I use to get a heavy vibration at about 5-7k revs but that seems to have reduced. I do have this rattle from the headlight area at about 5k revs in any gear, which drives me crazy, but cannot find it for the life of me. I have looked everywhere I maintain and service myself, unless its electrical

Some mods, full system exhaust, EJK fuel controller, LED lights, improved and shaped seat for better and more comfortable long distance riding, for me and the passenger, EBC brakes and rotors and clutch plates and springs.

I think I will keep it for another year or so, or even longer.

  9. Buy a PCX, its fine fun and an easy ride, don't worry about the lack of experience, just practice (best do sunday morning first and get use to it). If you feel comfortable going in between cars (lane splitting) then ok, if not then dont worry, not everyone does.

If you buy a bike and wish to ride in BKK, just protect yourself. Helmet, buy a good one, spend more on this than you want to spend. DOT approved and full face. Gloves another must, road rash on your hands is bloody horrible. Always wear closed toe shoes, that's the basics.

if you want, buy a padded safety jacket, can get a good one below 3k. Padded trousers with knee protection are not essential, but if and when you do come off, you might change your mind on them. You can buy all this at the paddock on Ratchada near Huaw Kwan MRT.

Watch as much on YouTube as you can, I recommend "Twist of the wrist", you are not going to be doing superbike cornering, so only watch the first 30 or so mins.

other than that enjoy, it really isn't as bad as these idiots are making out, take it easy and relax on your bike. Remember, THE CAR DRIVER IS BLIND AND HAS NOT SEEN YOU, SO ACT THAT WAY!

  10. Yep, s##t happens sometimes, had Songkran been celebrated in UK, the hoodies and the chavs would've created more havoc and mindless violence than this. All the "share this with everyone you know" crowd, are you also this enthusiastic about sharing good experiences you may encounter in TH, or do you just enjoy a good whinge?

Actually, you are quite wrong. The notting hill carnival is of equivalent to what happens on Songkran here in Bangkok and much bigger than Hua Hin's songkran effort. Of course incidents have happened, in the past (1980's/early 90's), including stabbings, but it is pretty rare now to have such a problem at these events in the UK. This of course is due to the overwhelming police presence that you would find at such an event and the resources law enforcement of a western country can afford to push at it, is far greater than what can be afforded here in Thailand.

As much as I am disgusted by this video and the actions of these people, this really isn't "an only thai problem", this happens around the world and in some places they would of finished them off by cutting the throats of those lying on the ground. it's shocking, yes share it, tell people to be careful when on holiday, but please measure your responses.

  11. I think the above story is pretty heartless ,I would have just claimed from my own insurance and given the 20 year old girl a break.

Motorbike.. Cant get insurance on old big bikes..

She put me directly out of pocket 1 million baht.. And made one leg shorter than the other.. forever.. 2 operations already.. 1 more to look forward to..

She choose to drive without a license, or insurance, in an untaxed car.. Then do a U turn on a superhighway without looking.. then tried to run away and pretend it didnt happen.

can't really use the argument she choose to drive with no insurance when it also appears you choose to drive with no insurance so both as bad as each other really,i just think shit happens all the time in thailand and you have to do your best to prepare for it,decent travel insurance would have covered accident costs and hospital bills bullying a poor young girl and her family is not the way i would choose to do things..you put yourself 1 million out of pocket by not having insurance in place.i suppose we all have different ways of dealing with things.

Well I had the most insurance you can get for a big bike from the parts import era.. The government standard legal insurance pays out 30k.. She had nothing, no license, no road tax, no insurance, just 100% illegal. Her mother even said about the accident "I dont know why it happened, shed been driving for 4 years" so driving from 16..

Also.. As is usual, there more to the story. Not that I need to justify it, but it went like this.

The accident happens, 100% her fault, she just didnt look when she turned on a dual carriageway, and I get banged up.

I go to hospital, get patched up, compounded leg set and plated.. Hand 3 pins and a screw in my wrist.. The end result of a car driver not looking.. Suck but thems the breaks. You know that when you ride here.

The bill for all this was a bit under 240k.. Remember when I said they were brought to the hospital ?? They were summoned to the hospital when I was a day or two short of discharge, a year of rehab, pain and no work ahead, but ready to leave. I personally got the accounting department to discount the bill, multiple times, until it was down to 190k and change.. I also had my wife run around the police stations, getting reports and files, so that they knock the 30k government insurance off the top of the bill also. The actual bill to pay then stood at 16X something.

When they were asked to visit the hospital, the day prior to my due release, I set up a meeting with the hospital accounting senior woman (great people to work with at RAM BTW) to also be there. She told the family that the hospital would put the bill on credit with them, and they could make stage payments over a couple of years, and they just needed to bring their tabien baan and the chanote of the land their house was on, which they said they had. This would allow them to set up a credit account.

We had the meeting, I told the girl, if she picked up that bill, the 160k left from the hospital, I would eat the rest.. My bike, my watch, my further operations, pain, injury, suffering, loss of work, etc etc etc.. Everything else I would take the hit, all she had to do was pay 160k over a couple of years, which even that was only about 2/3rds of the original hospital bill. Pretty fair I think ? and I did all the setting up, discussions, proposal, made a plan that was possible, all in a haze of pain and drugs. I felt if she at least took responsibility for her actions that far, I would feel she tried and karma would work it all out. C'est la vie..

Her and her mother agreed to do this.. In front of the hospital accounts woman, my lawyer, etc etc.. It was all agreed.. They would return tomorrow, with the paperwork, I would be discharged tomorrow, and they would settle 160k over term.. And I would eat the rest and it was over. Wais all round, smiles and agreement, assurances not to worry and 'they had this' etc etc..

The next day morning comes.. No show.. I call her.. Phone off.. My lawyer calls her.. Phones off.. My lawyer gets the police involved, who track the mothers phone from files.. Phones off.. I am waiting, in pain, in a hospital bed, not knowing if I can leave, go, stay whatever.. if they are coming after school, if shes in class, whats going on.. They just lied, in front of everyone, then ran and hid from the problem they caused and hoped it would all go away.

I ended up staying an additional day (obviously the above took all day to realize the deal they made the day before, they were not going to honour).. With much embarrassment with the hospital coming every hour asking if I am going ?? Which I couldnt answer.. Next morning I paid it cash and discharged myself.

Days went by, but the police ended up getting them, and forcing them to a mediation at the station.. I then gave them another chance. Pay me the 160k hospital bill, with no credit now, and I would still let it go.. This time I was a lot less forgiving and nice about it.. Sure 160k is a lot, but they can send her to payap university ?? They can afford get her a car to go there not a scooter ?? Anyway I gave them one more chance.. pay me 160k and its over, no court, no case, none of the other bills, settling for 20% of the actual damage. They refused, i think the mother offered me 10k baht.

So I told them, not paying the hospital bill would be the biggest mistake they made. They had the chance to settle for a fraction and I would figure the rest is just life, its not my first bike wreck, I choose to wear a platinum watch, etc etc.. They decided to fight me. She tried to avoid even the most basic responsibility for an accident she totally admits she black and white caused.

Fine, then I have to fight.. When I fight I win... All the chips !!

Well done fella, I am totally with you! All those sitting in an ivory tower with their holier than thou responses, obviously haven't been in such a position. the girl made multiple wrong choices and mistakes and you expect her to walk away unpunished just because she is young and poor? Seems to me the guy has been reasonable even before this latest instalment of the story, not getting her sent to jail!

Think back to the girl who caused 9 deaths on the highway, or the girl up north who mowed down those cyclists or even the guy that killed a young girl cyclist in Bangkok and did a runner. All condemned on here and rightly so, the person's individual circumstances should not have a bearing on it, young, old, rich or poor, when you make those types of mistakes due to bad driving, you should expect to be punished and if the BiB won't do it, then the choice is pretty simple if you ask me, lawyer up.

  12. I was forcibly removed from my bike by a car driver just last week at Muang Thong, without going into many details, the helmet saved my life as I crashed onto and came to a sudden stop at the curb. My Chest, Knee and helmet took the brunt of the collision and if i wasn't wearing that helmet, I would not be writing this now. The impact of the helmet with my head inside, shook my brain and I still have the headache. However, the surgeon that dealt with my knee cap that was split in 3, said without the helmet I would of been dead, without a doubt. The damage to the right side of my Arai helmet is extensive to say the least.

Wear a helmet, wear safety gear, from now on I think I will also wear knee pads!

    Be careful and ride safe

  13. I got the Honda CBR650f ans find really it has more than enough power as the roads are so freaking slippery here when bone dry that the back wheel is often slipping under hard acceleration in 1-2 gears, dread to think what more powerful bike would be like.

What tyres do you have on this bike that it is doing this to you? Is it the stock IRS? If so you should look at changing them to Pirelli to give you a much better riding experience and certainly a much safer ride.

As for the ZX10R, too much for me riding around Bangkok and I do prefer something more comfortable when out in the wilds! Awesome looking machine, that I can imagine is a load of fun.

  14. Stopped at a red light, I felt like I had a barbecue grill between my legs when riding the air cooled Ducati Monster.

Then, with a bike like this, you need to wear protection. On top of that, add the tropical heat to the equation.

All that heat reduces the pleasure factor for me.

Then you have the ratio of 400 slow scooters for every big bike out there. Not compatible with the traffic or numerous hazards that pop up all the time...Thailand is just not that great for big bikes.

Hmm, I have to disagree. I think Thailand is great for big bikes. You can ride all year round, compared to 6-7months in Europe. Much more freedom too. When I ride in Europe, I'm always worried about the police and hidden radar traps. If I lived closer to the mountains here, riding would be near perfect. Heat doesn't affect me much, nor the rain. Police harassment (or the fear of it) on the other hand, takes away a big chunk of fun.

Now, if you're talking about riding a big bike in Bangkok, I have to agree 100%.

I have to disagree 100%, riding in Bangkok is fun and perfectly fine (most of the time), just don't choose something too big and clumsy and you are good to go. For my daily commute I have a CB300F, it's lightweight, quick and nimble. For a good bit of touring I went with BMW 800, but it gets a bit uncomfortable after about an hour, the seat is just not right for me I guess.

Never been stopped by police on either bike, so I am either lucky or I drive at the right times!

If sat in traffic the 300 does heat up abit, but the 800, no real issues (then again, not really had it long)

  15. Seedy

you are a probobly the guy who ran off with my driving license arent you.

lets say you are the one for sake of youre complete lack of understanding the situation that i am currently in.

I am about as pissed off at youre ignorance as w the copers

Seedy is right, you are to blame here! This isn't 'The States' its Thailand and Australia and anywhere else you are going on your holidays.

Check the rules, never just assume 'it will be okay' because generally it isn't ok. The situation you are in is of your own making and it annoys me that people such as you from the "First world" can come here and think you can do what you like without consequences, well suck it up Kid, these are the consequences of YOUR actions!

  16. Anyone know where i can get a radiator cover for this bike, in red if possible??? Thanks in advance

Check k speed bangkok. I am sure they have it too.

Yeah I got mine at K-speed, I posted a pic on here about 2 pages back. However, the H2C one looks very nice and half the price of the Motive one by K-Speed!

They also have this shield in, which I am undecided over

  17. Cromozone are selling bike racks that fit to most cars, you can find the details at bicycle Thailand website. I bought one and so far its fitted on a 95 CRV, Jazz, Soluna and a nissan saloon car, as long as it doesn't have a silly spoiler on the back of your car, you are pretty sound with it. Its called the 'Hollywood' and its about 3k. Cromozone is up by Ramintra KM8 and the Namawin intersection, but like I said bicycle Thailand has the web address, telephone numbers and stuff.

  18. So I have just got an email from the Liverpool overseas team 3, they tell me that my passport will be printed within the next 48 hours and sent out to me!

I sent my application off on 1st Aug, so its not bad....so far, I still actually have to get it back from Trendy! So that could be another couple of weeks, still I think I will be ok for my Visa renewal date of 9th September!

I have sent a complaint to consularenquiriesbangkok@fco.gov.uk and [email protected] everyday for the past two weeks, telling that I will look to take them to court if I end up an overstay due to there incompetence.

    Seems to of worked!

You shouldn't have been too hard on the British Embassy, in this particular train wreck, they are actually the good guys - it was the British Government which idiotically transferred overseas passport issue from the FCO (Foreign Office) to the Home Office and that action was what created this current fiasco.

It's the Home Office that is incompetent and not the Foreign Office, whose own hands were tied thus preventing them helping in any way until there was a policy change (giving them a hotline to HMPO for difficult cases) only just a few weeks ago.

What you are reporting may produce an application to collection delay record for Thailand of only 5 weeks, which is even less than 'promised' on the HMPO Website (effective minimum of 7 weeks).

Please let this thread know when you actually do collect your passport.

Sorry I failed to get back on this topic after I had picked my passport up from Trendy, which I collected on the 4th of September and had my new visa all sorted on the 9th. So it all worked out in the end.

You mis-understood, I actually was told by the British embassy to send the email to them so they could forward it on to the correct people in the UK. This all seemed to work very well and as you say resulted in a really quick turn around on the passport, so it can be done!

  19. I also have the CB 300F I am 3 weeks in and have had the first oil change and I had a stretched chain sorted too. I have a strange rattle about 5,000 rpm which is a little annoying and on reading this and a few other forums it seems its 'normal?'. Dealer says it will be ok after the oil change and chain tighten, but it was still there.

The bike is great as a commuter and I have had a pillion and it still performs well. Need to change those tyres though! Added a radiator cover from K-Speed and then its booked in for the tail tidy and an all in one LED tail light which should look great.
