  1. We often have snakes where I live in Phuket. The locals don't hesitate to come and take them away for re-lcation. They seem to do it very calmly, in fact I think they enjoy it!! Lemon grass planted around the property definitely works, as well as sprinkling sulphur powder around the outside of the building. The snakes don't like the smell/scent of both.

  2. I was wondering if their was a club or group where new mothers and babies meet regularly in Phuket. My wife is at home most days when I am working, she stays with our 2 month old daughter. I thought it would be good for her to get out a bit and meet other mothers who share a common interest.. new baby!.

Maybe this should be in the family forum...not sure.

My wife is Thai and we live in Kathu, Phuket.

Any information would be gratefully received.

  3. ok too late but I have a fairly large rice cooker that I never used before having my baby ( 5 days ago )

I have been using this rice cooker to boil water for his baths, pre-soak his dirty cloth diapers before wash ( machine ) , and yes sterilizing his milk bottles too, works for me.

i just click on cook and let it keep boiling ( keep warm ) until i need it ( usually 10 mins or so )

BREAST IS BEST !!! really it is. only thing I deal with is going braless sometimes, ok back home ( Singapore ) nobody really cares but here .................... hubby cringed when a buddy of his saw me breastfeed my baby at the hospital !!laugh.gif In Cambodia they go topless when breastfeeding, everybody understands ohmy.gif

Congratulations on your new baby. I have a 8 week old now. I can't believe that you use the same rice cooker to pre-soak dirty nappies and sterilize your bottles? That can't be a good idea........ I actually invested in the Phillips avent iq24. I have to say that it works just perfectly. All the bottles, breast pump etc go in there, stay sterilised for 24 hours, really no hassle at all. Small price to pay for peace of mind and ease. We too breast feed 90% of the time, but if we are out and it is inapropriate to get the breast out, we use pumped breast milk in bottles. Good luck.

  4. I have a property that I have rented in the uk for nearly 10 years. Two years ago, the letting agent, informed me that they were now required to disclose all recipients of rent to the tax man. Therefore, they had to withhold a certain % of my rent until all the correct paperwork / self assessment had been completed. As it turned out, the property cost more to maintain than the income, so no payment required, but subsequently now have to complete online self assessment forms. annually.

  5. I also want to know the same thing as ExpatDad - can you put baby seats in Bangkok taxis?

When I was in Australia in Jan I went to the Red Cross and they had ex-rental baby capsules for $82, that were still certified until Oct 2012, so there is one at my parents there now for when we visit.

They said you needed the car to have an anchor point behind the seat and that all cars in Aus have had them for 20 years.

I couldn't find the anchor point in my mums car I was driving there...

How do the baby capsules fit that you buy at Mothercare and Central? Seatbelts only or anchor points also?

I recently bought a baby chair from central. It had 4 different ways to secure it, unfortunately,my toyota fortuner did not support any of them except that standard seat belt system. There is nothing wrong with this as it works perfectly, but would seem the cars here are behind baby seat technology/ development.

  6. hello,

i'm just wondering if anyones still following this thread or maybe can restart ? swop some info. and advice maybe ?

our girl is 6 weeks now and my first - live in chiang mai.

our hospital is sephrat and we are going along with there recomendations for vaccinations/check ups etc.

i don't really know what i sould be planning /doing etc maybe getting some insurance/health care ?

my thai girl friend has had a child before 15 years ago so she knows what she's doing, but i don't know much just a few things i've picked up from the uk, so we have a few differences of opinion ! , just wondering if anyone else has been through the same and can help,

    chris

Hi, My daughter is now 4 weeks old. Like yourself, first time round and learning as we go! Not much pre or post natal carers around, but lots of friends with advice!! The best bit of advice I had was from a friend of my Mother in Uk. She said, do what you feel is right for you and your baby. So far seems good advice. Problem seems to come when you do everything you think is right and the poor baby is still crying/ screaming!!

We are in phuket and had our baby at the Phuket International Hospital. had a great all round experience!!!

  7. haha makmak, you obviously have no idea. Want to charge 6 months deposit, i would say no chance. I am involved in property and can honestly say this is unheard of. It sounds like you are very proud of your "non Pastel colours" and expensive electronics. You may be the only one that actually likes them, espiecially with those deposit demands. I am guessing that renting a 20k-25k rental, it must be a pretty small place anyway??

6months deposit should be able to get me some clean people while offering them very expensive furniture and interior design at a fair price

You will wait a long time to rent this place out asking for a six months deposit, maybe years.

I doubt someone that isn't a teacher could not afford to dump a little 6months deposit on a 20-25k house that has the furniture of a 200k per month place? Cheaper to do this even if it takes a little time to find someone then having to replace 200k worth of furniture wall stains after someone dirty lives there for a year and runs away leaving me only 40k What stops them from taking my 100k tv and selling it right before going back to their country?

Obviously people who live in pastel houses with the standard 6000baht 32" tv, cheap tesco showers and thai kitchens wouldnt know what im talking about. Class has a price

Oh dear, Me thinks that someone is in for a rude awakening. I let property in the UK. A word of advice. Magnolia and as little furniture as possible.

  8. That's what was going through my mind. Once PI and lawyer have been instructed and discovered something unlawful happening... then what? Obviously in a law abiding society, one could prosecute... but here? espiecially if the police have been involved in under the table activities. Biggest concern for me would be using gf's family house as security. Has that actually happened legally or just words? If it is legal, then i guess the OP wants to retrieve it... sounds to me like have gone over the edge of a very slippery slope. I wish I could be more constructive......... Good luck.

  9. If they really wanted to improve the whole beachfront area, then they could make the whole beach road area pedestrian only. That would improve the whole area ten fold. Build a ring road, manage the traffic better on remaining roads etc etc. It's all been said before, and will not change this decade!!!

  10. Have you looked in the classifieds here on Thai Visa. They regularly have cots for sale, both wooden and mobile travel cots.

    Worth a look.

Thanks Ashmanator, but I don't see any baby cots at Dana Baby's website.

Actually, I would be happy to visit a regular furniture store in BKK if someone pointed out where to go.

  11. Hi, I have recently used an online baby store called "Dana Baby". First class customer service and a good range of products.

    danababy.com

    Good luck

Sorry to revive the old thread. I am currently in BKK and looking for a place to buy a good new baby bed/crib, with an option to deliver to the province. Emporium, Central and Siam Paragon is not an option for me with their prices starting at 20'000++ for the wooden crib :o. I'd be grateful for any info about baby furniture shops. Please people share where you get the cribs/beds for your babies. :wai:

  12. minimum wage is 230 baht/ per day, so if only working a few hours a day then scale it down. Mind you, you are entrusting this lady with a big responsibility, so maybe her wage should reflect that? Have you thought about employing her full time and including general chores around the house to ensure your wife doesn't feel she has too much to do?

  13. wow, that's a lot of replies!!

Thanks to everyone for their advice/ suggestions.

It seems that there are not too many options locally, unless prepared to pay the huge mark up on most imported( therefore safety certified) items.

I was just surprised that there are not more online shopping sites available with less mark ups (overheads).

I will keep looking and as someone suggested, there seems to be a lot of second hand stuff around. However when it's your first child, it's kind of nice to have it all new and shiny!!!

Some good advice there, thanks to everyone again.

  14. Thanks for your replies.

    Quite right "equipment" is vague.

This is the first child we will have so essentially looking for everything to get started... Strollers, car seat, play pen, feeding, bouncer and anything else that may appeal to excited first time parents!!

  15. Hi,

I am looking for the best place to buy baby equipment in Phuket.

Have looked at big shopping Malls, just wondering if there is anywhere else with a decent selection?

Or does anyone know any good online sites (thailand based) that have good range?

    Thanks in advance
