  1. I know a guy here though who prints an own publication. he got a journalist visa
What are the criteria for getting a visa for work on your own publication?

As I know Thai logic, you have to show a finish publication as sample. But I do not know have to make the publication if you do not have Work Permit :o

Anyway, what is minumum salary for an European journalist? As I know it is 20K a month, and not 50K as a normal Work Permit.

  2. You can only bee divorced at an Ampoer if you are married at an Ampoer, that’s it.

If you have an overseas marriage to a Thai national, you need to go to the Family Court, and some fancy Thai lawyers may charge you 50,000 to 60,000 Baht for that service.

I know people who can do that for lesser than 20,000…

(A resident is a Thai national or an Alien with a residentship ID card. An extended visa is not residency, but extended staying only.)

    Cheers, Robert

  3. Hi,

I am to open a new company. I have W/P in an old one already and I want to transfer the W/P to the new one.

According to the new law, the share capital has to be paid fully up. And it is easy, if you can show that the money is transferred in from abroad.

However, I do not have 2 million baht in cash, and I consider it complicated to circulate 2 million Baht in and out of Thailand.

So, any suggestions to make the share capital fully paid up?

    Regards, Robert

  4. Sorry if this specific question has been answered elsewhere:Do you get the black stamp if you are one day over, leaving at the airport?  I understand the risks of getting caught even one day over.  I just don't want the black stamp for the long term.ThanksThanks, DD

Last year my Visa B was overstayed one weekend. Ran out Friday 2400 hrs. And was renewed at BKK Immigration the following Monday without any problem or stamps.

Only problem was my W/P, which couldnt be renewed and my lawyer had to start all over with the W/P. Dont ask why I didnt showed up in Bangkok on time... Stupid case.

  5. Hi,

I just wonder, because the overseas falang shareholder of my company requested to be able to countersign on our company bank checks (two has to sign together on each check). The bank did ask for my work permit as usual as I am director and managing director

BUT the bank did not ask for his work permit, which he does not have because he does not work or live in Thailand.

Anyway, I still consider any kind of signature for a company in Thailand by an alien requires a work permit.

He does not intend to sign but he simply wants to be able to sign as he has a lot of money in our company bank account.

But can anybody answer whether he actually is allowed to sign a bank check for a company in Thailand without work permit?

    Regards, Robert

  6. Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that with the double taxation agreement that it may be possible to have the option of paying tax in Thailand if more beneficial. Do you know if this is the case or not? Thanks

I am no expert in TAX and double taxation, but I am quite sure that the agreement about double taxation does not give you any options but simply means that if you have paid TAX in farang-land already, you do not need to pay TAX again in Thailand.

Meaning, if you have a PENSION in Denmark, which is taxable in Denmark, you do not need to pay tax again in Thailand if you are living here. You have to pay tax of pension in Denmark, because there is tax deduction when saving. This is the logic, I think.

Opposite, if you are living and WORKING in Thailand and earning money in Denmark, which is not taxable in Denmark, you do not need to pay tax in Denmark as you in reality should inform the Revenue Department in Thailand.

The biggest problem is to come out of the taxation system in Denmark. I think it normally takes two years after “signing out” of Denmark if you do not have any social income from Denmark.

I think that insurances may be like pensions, in particularly if there have been tax deductions, but if your GF has left Denmark for more than two year, she may ask the insurance company. Because maybe she just need to get a certificate from the “Revenue Department” in the city she was living before leaving Denmark. That has to certify that she is not taxable anymore.

Anyway, I am not sure, but if you write a nice email to the insurance company, I am quite sure they will give the right answer.

  7. Ok, good to get this clarification. What you're basically saying is that the key for it to succeed is to have an effective yet cheap supervision system.

Yes; and the next key for a smaller hotel is to found a way to keep salary reasonable for experienced employees without they are resigning. Thai hotel employees are often looking for job possibilities at hotels with more stars. Only a strong phu jay MD/GM is able to keep staff. An employed GM at a smaller hotel may have some problems, I think.
  8. I was contacted by a group of foreign investors, interested to invest between $50,000 - $500,000 in an Island beach resort

Not possible! This kind of investment is too small. If a foreign investor wants to make money on a hotel in Thailand (with the heavy competition), he must to invest in a four or five star hotel. Small investments, even 20 mil baht, are for retirement investors only or small business. Or for investors, who want to make fun.

Many years ago I managed a large luxury hotel and have also owned small motels.Guess which business had a greater net profit per investment dollar and after expenses?Bigger isn't always better and the vacancy rate with the large hotel was always higher than the motels. Motels on a busy highway or vacation area are cash machines where one is basically just renting bedrooms by the night or week and where half the receipts were in cash unlike the hotel which was mostly on credit cards.Having 10 motels costing $1,000,000 each in good locations will make more than one ten million dollar hotel.

Yes, because if you owns and runs a small hotel by yourself, you will have small expenses, BUT if a group of investors, who want dividend and what so ever, and GM, MD, directors, etc, are responsible to them, everybody wants bigger salary... Keep is simple is good, but then you have to run without investors, otherwise it is not simple.
  9. Wasn't sure it was a theological question - I thought the use of rings predated even the late arrival of Christianity to Denmark. Also despite having officially a high number of members in the Folkekirke (because all birth registration procedures have to take place through the parish church offices), Denmark has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, church attendance records in Europe. It would be interesting if you could display your knowledge and therefore explain why Denmark should have another tradition from e.g. the UK.

What ever church attendance records, most Danes are still baptized, confirmed, married, and buried in the Danish National Church, and the minister are still the one to putt the rings on the fingers (even that is a new Church ritual). And that has nothing to do with any birth registration procedures. Wedding on the RIGHT, and engagement on the left, but some do it opposite. Many are very confused, and that may be the main reason for a mix-up and for using Hollywood traditions. I have no idea why it is different in UK, Thailand, USA, etc. I am just telling about how we do it in Denmark and how I have experienced it in Kingdom.

The situation in Holland is that the wedding ring is for Catholics on the LEFT hand and for Protestants on the RIGHT hand. IMHO it has to do with religion. That's why in mainly catholic countries like Belgium, France, Italy the wedding ring is worn LEFT and in mainly protestant countries like Germany, Denmark the wedding ring is worn RIGHT. In my situation (Dutch, Catholic) I wore my engagement ring RIGHT and after marriage my wedding ring LEFT.

Good explanation, and that also explans why Hollywood wears rings on the LEFT as Hollywood often is following Catholic or Jewish traditions. Thanks!

  11. Hi, In Denmark, most married couples wear the ring on the RIGHT hand. Anyway, some Danes clam that the wedding ring belongs to the left hand. BUT that is incorrect, and may be an imported trend from Hollywood movies or the like. I have that understanding that in Thailand, if you wear a ring, you have it on your LEFT hand. Especially the American trend with a BIG diamond on the LEFT hand for the woman. However, it seems like many BIG, BIG diamond rings (often a bad quality as it looks yellow…) on the bride's LEFT hand are to disappear after the wedding party as it was a FACE thing only and can be sold afterwards. I have never heard about wedding rings on the RIGHT hand in Thailand? BTW, to wear the ring on the LEFT hand can be practical, in particularly if you use soft Thai gold or a BIG yellow diamond, as that hand normally is more active than the right.

At the risk of diverting this thread to a discussion on Danish customs... My first wife (who was Danish) and I, during our time in Copenhagen (over 20 years), always wore our rings on our left hands. We were aware there were some Danes who used the right hand, but in Copenhagen, they were, as far as we could observe, in the minority. We always had the opinion that the right handed wedding rings were mostly worn by those closely following their Jysk traditions (those from the mainland of Jylland). This mainland being connected to Germany and therefore, perhaps more influenced by the German custom.

I am theologian, so I think I know what I am talking about when I say, wedding rings belong to the right hand in Denmark...

  14. My Thai girlfriend has recently received some insurance payments from denmark. It would appear that she has been taxed on at least some of these payments at 40 percent. As she is Thai, living in Thailand, does she have to pay tax in Denmark? Or is she able to claim it back and pay tax in Thailand?
As I know, anyone has to pay tax of whatever money from Denmark, except for some very special positions. And only because of the "double taxation" agreement between Thailand and Denmark, she does not need to pay tax again in Thailand.
  15. Has anyone lived in Boss Tower and how did they like it?

Also I will be travelling a lot and don't really want maids always going into my room all the time. Can I sign up for a non-serviced apartment and pay for laundry and cleaning on a as wanted or needed basis or do it myself if they have a self-service laundromat? I would prefer my own bed linens and towels and to wash my personal laundry myself anyway.

If I go away for days or weeks would my room be locked and secure and nobody will be able to enter it so I can leave my computer and other valuables?

In Boss Tower is no maid if you do not pay for maid. You get what you pay. I liked to stay in Boss Tower, cheap, but a bit old fashion. I had lots of equipments in my room, no problem.
