  1. I wanted to open a new account for saving my dollars in Ayudhya Bank this morning. And then I was told I had to exchange to Thai Baht first to save the money. Why? They told me I even couldnt save dollars in Citibank Thailand. btw, I dont have an acc in Citibank. So any other banks that I could open an acc to save my dollars in?

    :o

I believe the HSBC bank near sathorn rd allows u.s dollar deposits, but you need to keep a large amount in the account or there are large fees.

  2. Hi, just a quick question to you techie bods.

If you have the UBC reciever in the lounge ( as most people would ) and have it wired to go to another room - ie bedroom or office, are you able to change channels from the room without the UBC box in.  Do UBC sell a gadget to allow this to happen ?

On Sky - they can supply a small in line TV remote eye + an remote, is there anything you lot use in TH

    Cheers

    CF

The official answer from UBC is no, because they want you to get the second box. Unofficially, speak to an UBC installer and most will install a box which will do what you want for 2-3000 baht. The system basically sends a remote signal down the rf cable to your sat box from the other room. It's a lot cheaper than the UBC second box, but you can't watch seperate channels in each room. If you are prepared to install the rf cable yourself, you can probably buy the system pretty cheap in the electronic shops in Chinatown.

  3. The PSI dmove satellite system has at least two indonesian satellites available, with about 20 indonesian channels, including MTV and the usual soaps and general entertainment stuff. They also show free premiership football, and movies and american tv series in english late at night. Other satellites have bbc world, star sports, bloomberg for english speakers - best of all it's all free to air. Best thing to do is to get both PSI and UBC, so both you and your girlfriend will be happy.

  4. Let's do some maths....say 120 minutes of air-time devoted to each game on average....and 1000 games in the next season.....that's 2000 hours of live and delayed football.

So to watch each and everyone of these games continually if that was possible, would take 84 days (day and night).

Who says we're saturated with football?

Anyway, this aside, I pay 1600 baht a month for UBC which works out at about 50 baht a day. Good value?

Well, on a Saturday night with four or five, or even more, live games to chose from, plus excellent ESPN commentary and analysis from Singapore....hard to beat!

Thinking of subscribing now the premier league is on again......would i be right in thinking the "GOLD" package UBC offer will give me a good selection of the English footy???? Birmingham City fan here.....!!!!!

I watch all the premiership games on my local cable network, 250 baht a month!

They seem to get ESPN coverage in english on TV7 which I believe is an Indonesian Network.

TV7 is a free to air indonesian channel on the telkom satellite. Last night i watched all three premiership games for free, and tonight i will be watching Arsenal and Chelsea play for FREE. You just need the right satellite equipment to pick up the signal.

  5. The truth is that all these methods employed by farangs to 'own' landed property - i.e leases, company formation etc - has not been tested in a court of law, and if it was, the judge would probably still side with the Thai partner, especially if the company you set-up was created solely for the purposes of buying property. Luckily, my wife's family think i'm a member of the mafia, so are too afraid to touch my two houses i have purchased. So my advice is to buy the house in the wife's name and keep her happy :D . If you can't keep her happy, be prepared to walk away from it all, so keep a nice a little nest egg for yourself. If all else fails, send the mafia in: there are things in Thailand that are above the law :o .

  6. I believe all the bus prices went up by one or two baht recently.

The red buses went up to 4 baht from 3.50.

But that increase was quite a while back. I haven't taken that route for some time, but the wife tells me that all non-aircon buses went up by one baht. so the red buses are now 5 baht and the white ones are 6 baht.

  7. QUOTE(tigah @ 2005-06-16 20:41:30)

Anyone know much about this area? I thinking of renting a townhouse just off Ekamai 12. How far from the BTS is it?

    Cheers

The Ekamai bts station is probably a few hundred yards away. If you can't walk it, get a motorbike taxi or the number 23 bus (5 baht).

There's always the BTS bus(free). No. 23 bus is 5 baht now? 4 baht the last time I took it.

Ekamai 12 is a very nice soi.

I believe all the bus prices went up by one or two baht recently.

Tigah, ekamai bts station is on the sukhumvit road. And the tesco lotus and carrefour is just two stops away outside on nut bts station, but if you go in the other direction on the bts, there's a tops supermarket near thonglor and a villa supermarket near the emporium that sell more farang food. The only swimming pools are in the hotels and serviced apartments.

  9. I'm just burnt a movie  to a  DVD-RW. But it wont play in my DVD player. Is this because it wont play -RW and should i burn to +RW instead. Have checked my manual for my standalone DVD player but cant see anything. Samsung DVD-M108. Cheers in advance.

Just wondering if it would be better to burn to + instead of -.

Cutting to +RW will make no difference. Most modern DVD players should play both. If anything, - has a higher compatibility than +. Try cutting to DVD-R, the signal coming off the lsaer is stronger, or use a different brand of discs. Some DVD players play some brands better than others.

  10. Commercial pressed DVDs are invariably DVD-9 format (9 Gigs on a disk), a DVD-R can only fit about half as much so you need to re-encode the video data to fit.

Thanks for that bit of info - I was wondering what was meant when the guys selling the dodgy DVDs were proud of the fact that their's were DVD-9.

I thought that it was just a trendy local term for better quality, obviously it's a lot more basic than that. More data stored for the same movie = better resolution/sound....in theory :o

    Cheers

    Rags

I dont think DVD 9 is always 9GB and original ... DVD 9 is the pirated copy from the original DVD region1 or 2 which comes with the bonus materials and it has better quality than DVD5...Dvd5 is too much compressed and sometimes taken frm VCD's or or shot in miniDV frm a theater.

It used to be the case that DVD 5 disks were the camcorder theatre copies, whilst the DVD 9 were straight copies of the originals, so far superior than the old DVD 5 copies. But now most DVD 5 disks sold are rips of pre-release copies, often given to members in the movie industry, who then pass them onto the pirates. The picture quality of DVD 5 disks is now just as good as DVD 9 discs, so much so, that many of the 'DVD 9' disks sold in pantip are in fact DVD 5. To fit a DVD 9 disk onto a DVD 5 disk, they simply extract just the movie, and leave out all the extras you usually find on an original movie. There is software that can do a similar thing - this an alternative to using compression. Some DVD players have problems playing compressed disks, especially if the compression is too high.

  11. Hi there,

I recently bought a notebook without a CD/DVD drive.I m thinking to buy a firewire or USB dvdrw drive. What i don't know whether i would be able to boot my notebook from an external usb/firewire dvd drive?

Yes, there is usually a setting in your bios that allow you to boot from an external usb drive - not sure about firewire - but this setting is usually turned off.

  12. so i wiped my hard drive and did a complete system restore

How did you wipe the drive ? where did you restore from ? did you mean you reformated the hard drive and did a clean reinstal of the OS from an original CD ?

if not then it's very possible for a virus to still be with you.

Maybe you have some faulty hardware, first suspect being your DVD drive.

My compaq laptop comes with restore discs that reinstalls windows, removes all partitons and formats the hard drive, which i assumed would clear everything from the drive. I managed to execute the restore discs from my external usb drive, because i found an option in the bios to boot from a usb drive - very useful !! I am willing to believe the dvd drive is faulty, but the inability to run various anti-virus software to completion has me baffled. I am told that many viruses disables anti-virus software, which is why i think i have a virus. I have checked my hard-drive and everything is ok. In fact, my computer is working fine because i am able to use my external cd drive, except for the inability to run my anti-virus software. Is it possible that a virus copies itself into the bios or flash memory on hardware components ?

  13. My computer recently showed signs of a virus, despite having all the Mcafee firewalls and anti-virus software running: First, my DVD drive thought it was a hard disk and does not function, and then my computer would shutdown anytime i try to run a virus or spyware scan. I was convinced i had a virus, so i wiped my hard drive and did a complete system restore, but the symptoms are still there. Firstly, can a virus survive a system restore ? Secondly, what else can i do to get rid of this ###### thing ?

    Any suggestions most welcome !

  14. The marathon went past my place yesterday. I can confirm that there were many people taking the opportunity to relive themselves in front and behind some roadside billboards near my place.

In that respect, young Paula is no different to the rest of the marthon racing public.

If you live near the site, can you retrieve the turd. Send it to me by e.m.s and i'll sell it on ebay. :o:D:D

I'll split the profits with you ! :D

  15. Hi,

Can someone please give me an approximation of the costs involved to buy a moobaan (townhouse) in Bangkok for 1200000 Baht.

ie: title transfer, loan fees etc :o

    Thanks.

    Regards, BaanOz

I don't know about loan fees, because i paid in cash. I don't know about the other fees either, because they were paid by the housing developers as an incentive to buy. They also gave us a 10% discount on the purchase price. :D The trick is not to look overly interested: wait for them to phone you and they may give you a lot of freebies. :D

  16. Hello everybody

Is it legal to sell merchandise from the road markets worldwide through internet? Whats the best way to send it from thailand worldwide ?

Whats cheaper ? whats Secure ?

    Thank you a lot

    Ben

If you plan on selling items from the markets, ems is not an option, because it would make the item to expensive to sell. The only option is to use airmail (registered or unregistered is up to you), but make sure you allow for some lost packages.

  17. I just want to know why?

Identity theft is a major problem today. It is surprising how much information can be gained from the envelope the person stole. He knows your name, address, bank, bank code, account number, credit card number. From this info, it is possible to get your date of birth, parent's names, mother's maiden name (a security measure used by the u.k banks), especially if you have an unusual surname. If he comes to your house and raid your bins, he probably can get hold of your signature and much more. I don't want to scare you, but it happened to a friend of mine.

  18. ^ God I'm like so stupid sometimes....thanks mate it's all become clear now....sorry OP my mistake and then some.

Maybe you are not so stupid, because i've just noticed the guy's e-mail address - sounds very chinese to me ! Maybe the OPs english is not to good, and wishes to clarify whether he is a teacher or a student looking for a teacher.

  19. I think he doesn't know any chinese dialects at all, but wants to learn. If you want to learn a Chinese dialect, there are only two worth learning and that's Mandarin and Cantonese. Cantonese, only because they speak it in Hong Kong, but most Hong Kong Chinese speak Mandarin now, so you should learn Mandarin. As for a teacher, i recall someone advertising Mandarin lessons in the Bangkok post a while ago - not sure if he's still doing it.

  20. Your'e probably right (for the moment) that the Americans buy more and pay more....but since my wife is Chinese.....she showed me the Ebay-site in China and you will not believe your eyes WHAT they are buying and selling (and the quantities), but I agree it's probably done more locally rather than internationally since most Chinese still don't speak any English and will have problems paying to overseas accounts.

If the Chinese were ever let loose internationally on ebay, they would be the sellers, not the buyers ! By the way, i'm Chinese and used to sell on ebay out of Hong Kong, so i know my stuff, and i'm well aware of what is happening on the Chinese ebay site, but the fact is if i listed items on the chinese ebay from Thailand, i would sell nothing !
