  1. Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunatley, the Thai in question does not yet have the opportunity to go to the US so it would have to be online. The reason I ask is because paypal now allows Thais to have an account, but they can only withdraw to a US Bank, no Thai banks. If that is the case, how is the average Thai who signs up for a paypal account supposed to get their money?

    You can withdraw money to Hong Kong accounts, and Paypal have also recently added Korea and Taiwan as destinations where you can withdraw, i believe.

  2. I have dowble entry tourist visa in my passport. I will make new passport in bangkok.  The tourist visa looks like sticker attached on paper by paste,

    Then it cannot be remeoved , so I would like to know how can the immigration move this sticker to new passport? and How many hours or days must I wait to get this process? and the new passport signature must be same with old passport signature?

    the old visa sticker is not removed and put into new passport; they put a new visa stamp and fill in the details of visa in new passport. If you go to immigration, the visa is transferred on the same day - only took me about half an hour. And there is no fee.

  3. Do you get a new digital set top box as part of the deal ? If that's the case, I suspect its just part of UBC's Evil Plan to make you pay to upgrade your box - so that UBC can start offering/charging you for new digital/internet services like movies on demand. They sent a letter around a few months back trying to persuade people to pay to upgrade their box to watch a couple of extra lame sports channels. It was a predictably lame dog deal and failed (also predictably).

    Can anyone confirm the digital box is part of the deal ?

    I've just checked their website, and it doesn't sound like you will get the digi-box. If you rent the equipment, surely they will upgrade it for you ? But if you purchased your equipment, you'll probably have to buy one yourself, and they ain't cheap.

  4. Also, a new channel is being added to the existing packages and the price will increase slightly.

    I think it's just a way of hiding the price increase on the other package, because everybody will be focusing on this new platinum package.

    What price increase? The web site lists the same price for the Gold package as it is now: 1,412.97 with VAT included.

    Lopburi, the OP said the existing packages will go up slightly, which probably means an extra 100 baht approx.

  5. Anyone ever hear of the Soken brand for TV/DVD/Audio equipment?  I mean outside of Thailand? Or is it strictly a Thai company?

    Never heard of Soken outside of Thailand, but you can probably buy the same equipment under a different brand name in other countries: Many of these cheap brands have the same electronics inside which have been cheaply produced in China. They are then repackaged in their own brand name for various countries. If you open them up, you'll find the made in China sticker, and the region by-pass codes for DVD players are the same for various cheap brands.

  6. and the other channels are pants !

    Of course I understand the sentiments, but what is the story behind this expression? It's a new one on me. :o

    Ajarn, it's a British expression for something that is rubbish, or 'trash' as the Americans would say.

    ZOVOX, yeah, got that part. But the origin? Some story behind it?

    Thanks

    As already mentioned, 'pants' in the u.k is underwear, and not trousers as it is in America. The word is a slang expression, which i first heard amongst the youth on the streets of London, so it's probably just something someone made up.

  7. Hey guys, hope someone can help. Ok i thought my PC was freezing due to the new game i installed. ie Half Life 2. But it done this yesterday aswell when i tried to do a virus scan. Didnt think too much about it until it done it again. This time it was when i was writing a document on word. Not just once but twice. Very annoying as its an important doc. So any ideas why this is doing it? Maybe a virus? I cant scan the Pc though. As i said before  it froze on virus scan. Any help would be great. Cheers!

    Don't do nothing drastic like buying new hardware, or calling in experts technicians yet. The fact that your problem started after this game was crashing on you, probably means these crashes screwed up your system and there's a good chance you can fix it yourself . Firstly, uninstall the game, and if that doesn't work, backup all you personal files and reinstall windows. If you are running win xp, you can also try restoring a previous boot-up.

  8. Take a look at the UBC REPACKAGE PAGE and see that the platinum package is a joke!

    Platinum adds the following channels:

    * Movies x 2 (MGM, TCM)

    * Entertainment x 3 (StarWorld, E!, TVB(??))

    * Kids x 1 (Animax)

    * News x 3 (BBC-Prime, A1, STC(??))

    No ABC-Asia Pacific which is what I was hoping for!!  :o

    As i thought, the extra channels are worthless: TVB is a Hong Kong channel and broadcast in cantonese; Starworld is very similar to ubc series; and the other channels are pants ! I think it's just a way of hiding the price increase on the other package, because everybody will be focusing on this new platinum package.

  9. (1) the wife uses her Thai name and the farang his name (thereby disguising the marriage

    Your post just raised a question in my head: When we purchased our first house, the house was put in my wife's maiden name, even though we were married a month before, because her id card still had her maiden name. Does this have any legal implications for me; I am specifically thinking about, in the event of a divorce, will the house be considered assets she had prior to marriage because it is her maiden name, because i understand that in thai law assets obtained prior to marriage are not divided ?

  10. hey all , where can i get the TRUE hi speed modem near the sukhumvit soi 19 ? Does emporium have any TRUE outlet ? if there is one does any one know how lon is it open coz my office ends at 8PM so cant go before that ..

    If you are near Asoke, take the underground to Phra ram 9 station, and there's a large True shop in the IT mall, Fortune tower.

  11. Zovox:

    There is a general presumption under Thai land law such that any structure built on land belongs to the landowner; unless an application is made to the Land Dept. otherwise to the effect.

    In effect, what this means is if you want to build a house on your wife's land, and want to be the registered owner of the house, you and your wife need to go the Land Dept. where the land is registered and submit an application for registration of ownership of the land to be recognised as being different to that of the house.  Not too onerous a task - but I cannot remember the fee structure.

    SM  :o

    Thanks SM ! If i were to do this would i get seperate papers for the house, or would it be recorded on the title deeds of the land ?

  12. Hey Thank you Darknight :-)

    So basically, you would recommend the choice of me going to live in the Netherlands? :-) For me & my bf, we want to get married either here or there. So that's no problem. We've been apart for few yrs now. And we think it's time to  finally be together. I have no problem with living there if they allow me. And oh... my bf's salary that i said 1300 euros ...is Netto :-)

    You think I stand any chance in getting permit to go there on WVV (longer than 3 months visa) and get married there and live with him?

    Cose like you said, he's still young and even if he could get teaching Eng job here, I think there's very very lil chance he can get 40k a month to be able to stay on non-imm visa based on supporting me. ... SO now I'm kind of aiming to go stay there if possible.

    Thank you very much :-)

    I agree with everything Darknight has said, but equally, it's hard for the woman to adapt to a western life. I know many asian girls who go to the west and they have no friends and family, and end up very lonely and isolated. It puts a lot of strain on the relationship. The truth is it will be hard either way, and it basically depends on the two of you. Personally, i would move to Thailand to be with my partner, but that's just me - your case may be different. Good luck !

  13. So, Iam a british guy, born in England, now live in THailand, married to a THai. My wife is having a baby how do i get dual citizenship for the child ?

    Your wife will probably know how to do all the stuff required as a Thai citizen. As for British citizenship, you just need to go to the British embassy and apply for a British passport. You'll probably need to take your passport, the baby's and your birth certificate.
