I don't really understand the purpose of publishing a map and location of checkpoints, unless it's information being published so people can avoid them?  Otherwise, seems counter-productive.

So, when hundreds of thousands if not millions of tests are needed yesterday, they will provide just 100,000 of these new tests... 5 WEEKS FROM NOW?  

But wait... I didn't see him apologize and Wai the farangs he insulted about face masks?

Of course when it's Thai tourists who are the ones out trashing or in other ways disrespecting World Heritage Sites, or other country's National Parks, like, say, Yellowstone; then they are just "Thais being Thais," or "kids being kids," etc.

The strange thing is that the article talks about 'alumni.'  So are alumni, teens?  I also had to laugh about the: "well, there were numerous etchings in various languages."  Right... and some of them might have been more than 1000 years old!!

Just curious... does anyone remember the death toll as a result of flooding in 2011?   If so, how does it compare with this year?  19 in the last four weeks... or almost 5 per week seems pretty high.

Is this article correct?  They must work 30 x 8 hour shift per month for 10k to 13k baht with no benefits??? That means working every day with one day off every other month, and extra shifts in February!  They are not getting hired because they are slave labor!!

The headline alone tells the story.  Starting police are paid what?  8000 per month, from which they must buy their own uniforms, weapons, etc.?  But somehow that 8000 baht per month job is worth a 400,000 baht bribe to land the job.  Yea, right--no corruption here.

But, sincere question: if one (or a government) puts a big sum of money out in the form of a limit buy order, the purpose for which is to artificially keep the market prices at current levels, is that not the same as paying far more than market price?  Obviously if the limit buy order was not there, the market price would drop significantly.  That's the whole purpose of advertising such a multi-billion THB limit buy order.  Well, that, and obviously to garner popular support right before a vote.

It is just another example of why there is no such thing as a 'free market' anywhere in the world.

The way this is described as a suicide is beyond me. Please Mr. Policeman can you show us how this is possible. Even Poirot couldn't come up with that. Very sad and condolences for the family.

By Thai standards it not the most bizarre suicide; at least with his hands tied and his mouth and nose taped, he did not then throw himself off a bridge.

I thought gatherings of 5 or more people were still banned in Thailand?

My guess is that a local 'popular beer brand' did their own months of 'research' at the parlor, and then pleaded with the owner/manager to be able to pay with beer chits (probably stolen from their boss) instead of baht. The girls were then probably paid (against their wishes!) with these beer chits instead of the pay promised, so the owner/manager comes out okay. And hey, the girls are illegal, so they can't complain. It's an age-old scam: pay with other than legal tender to keep employees in debt. What is the old song: 'I owe my soul to the company store.'

Conversely, you can be sure the police were paid with girls and cash.

The actual 'happenings' do sound a bit vague. The grunt fires his gun into the air, in anger at the NCO who is moonlighting as a security guard. Then the LT, who was having dinner, shoots the grunt 3 times. But, question, was this after the grunt had already gotten back into his pickup to leave? Or did the grunt get into his pickup after being shot? Or did the grunt fire his gun into the air while sitting in the pickup? Where were the grunt's friends? Were they (or anyone else) endangered by the LT shooting? Did the LT shoot from his dinner table? Or did he approach the grunt and order him to put the gun down? At any rate, somehow the grunt is shot three times and is in his pickup when the LT approaches, ostensibly to check the status of the victim. The LT opens the door and is shot dead; or perhaps the door swings open and the LT is shot dead. The grunt survives a few more days in the hospital, then dies. Was he being guarded by a friend of the LT? Everyone was off duty, so were any of the involved wearing uniforms? The grunt had his gun but no ID? So he was just carrying a concealed weapon while off duty with no uniform or ID? Was the LT in uniform? Did the LT identify himself before shooting? Did the LT have any ID, or just his gun? Who paid the LT's dinner bill?

Seriously, is there not a lot of in-house training and things to be learned from this tragic 'friendly fire' event, which, it sounds like, could easily have been worse?

I'm sure very soon we will see this critical research published in peer review scientific journals. Yea... right. By the way, who sells most of the sesame seeds in Thailand?

Speedboats should only have "several" people onboard and should not be used as a form of public transport.

Especially the design of boat here...the driver can't see where the hell he is going with the engines trimmed to have the Bow about 4 feet above his forward eyeline, obscuring vision in a 15 degree sector of the direction he is going and always flat out fast as possible...how nuts is that ?

Well, no. The speedboats that service Koh Mak, for example (Panan, Leelawadee, Seatales, etc.), are all three engine boats designed to carry 30 to 50 passengers. So a 'speedboat' accident with 30 people is not at all unreasonable or even, sadly, unusual.

No - KC is a particularly high risk case - and has been for years - the rains there often cause chaos and disruption, bridges all got washed away a ew years back and some parts of the island were cut off to 4 wheel traffic for months even years. The infrastructure and regulations are simply not adequate for such a popular island.

it is not a fact it is BS..i have lived here before the roads were built...and at NO time has a road been closed for months or years...

I suspect it's a matter of interpretation. The main circular island road washed away while being finished on the far south end of the island, between Bang Bao and Salak Phet, and has never been completed. It is still impassable; hence the need for all traffic to go around the north end of the island. Also, the road being built years ago to Long Beach washed away and was impassable for a very long time. It is now open again, although not a good road by any means, and the remnants of the washed out sections are still visible. The bridge on the main road over the river in Kai Bae was washed out/washed over a few years back, but I think it was only impassable for days or weeks during the rainy season. The main road coming down into White Sands on the north end of the island mostly slid/washed away leaving just one lane and requiring significant reconstruction. All of this is exacerbated by the car ferries that can and do bring more traffic to the island than can be reasonably handled by the island's narrow, hilly and curvy roads.
