  1. As some else posted, NE is a good direction. In the winter, the sun hangs to the south, southwest and gets really hot on the walls. I built with double block, it helps. Lots of ventalation to catch the brezz from all sides is very practical. Sometimes it's not the sun that is the problem,it's those strong winds that kick up and bring in horizontal rain, blowing everything around so sometimes that patio/ varanda can get beat up and very wet. So, Longggg over roof all around with places to sit in the brezz at different times of day.

  2. Am I reading you right? This would be the first time you would have otherwise had a Thai connection with your SSN reported to the US? That's a pretty big whopper. I can't imagine that because they already had me in a wire tight trap long before FATCA came along, and I don't just have to file US but Thai as well and have from the gitgo.

This is the first time anyone in Thailand has asked for my SSN even the bank has never asked for it (cross my fingers, that could be next). This form seem like it will be submitted to the IRS by the company. When it comes to this type of thing I'm highly likely to just drop the policy than comply. Like I said this policy is small, not worth that anyone should be interested.

  3. My insurance company FWD just sent me a form W-9 that they want me to fill out, which means submitting my SSN. I've paid into this health and life insurance policy for near four years but I'm thinking just to drop the policy. Yes, I am not happy about the US new policy and that Thailand has signed on. That all aside, this is a small policy enough for a funneral really and the potential hospital stay which I have used. Just curious what some of you other Americans are doing in this situation. Thanks.

  4. I'm real happy with Eva, Online works well, just go slow. What bugs me though, I can fly from seatle, real cheap like everyone has discribed, but when I want to return in the spring, prices from BKK are hundreds of dollars more, same fight, just opposite. That suck, like now looking for a ticket in a couple of months, just sucks coming from this side of the pacific.Anyhow, I would sugest a round trip ticket and save, I just never know when I'll return so I can't take my own advise.

  5. I've been coming and stay in thailand for years on a Non O visa. Every 90 days I head to Nong Khai to cross over to LAO, get my Lao visa, stamp out then turn around and head back over to Nong Khai. The trip ussually takes about an hour sometime half that. Well, the thought came to me, why can't I just stamp out in Nong Khai, and then get in the entry line and stamp back in and avoid going over the bridge to Lao. Do any of you know if this possible, It sure would save some bucks and a bit of time.

  6. I for one love where I live in Isaan, it stays green in the dry season because we are near the river, The small town is good, ye a few things happen from time to time that ar'nt so good but overall you can live a quiet life. Good family, relatives and a few friends, life here is what you make of it, it's that way most places. But for me Isaan people have become home, because that is what my wife is, my kids, her parents. I got lucky, or maybe it was destiny, that brought me here but I'm happy here and that's where all of us should try to be, where we are happy, Perhaps that's why so many of us farang come and stay in thailand, and with the girl we have chosen. It makes happy.

  7. I'm sure glad I live in a small town, with country roads, broadwalks along the river,it makes biking around lots of fun, good exercise too. Riding the bike over to trade a book with a friend, share a story or two, or the wife and I riding to the market. Many poeple ride bikes around the nong khai region, groups doing indurence training to kids and old grandmothers. Those electric bikes are pretty cool too, I see some poeple zip along when there legs are tired or just being lazy, I've always wanted to try one. Anyhow I'm glad I'm living in a place that seems favorable to biking for all.

  8. About a year and a half ago, the wife and I went to lotus, and we both really noticed the price increase. We talked about it on the spot and there after, for we were in the same lotus two weeks before this dramtic jump. We live fairly low budget, but as one other poster put it, think about how hard it hits your average thai making 10 to 15 thousand bht per month. I'm glad my wifes a great cook and we grow alot of our own stuff.

  9. I was just thinking on this, and perhaps if there is'nt some strong poly weave material in thai, perhaps poly foil, like under roof tiles. comes in large sheets some brands can be strong. It's not black like the bedding material stuff you see in the west but perhaps it would serve the same purpose, retarding light and oxygen to the weeds. Well maybe a poster will direct me to just the perfect product.

  10. It's time to start landscaping around our house and I want to put river rock all around between trees and plants. Our walking surface you could say, but would like info on what to put under the river rock first so the weeds don't grow through, I don't want to spary pestiside. A product available in thailand, I live in nong Khai prov. just for reference. Thanks

  11. you might look into Crocidile ( spelling check) cement paint. If it's a small house, because the stuff is expensive. I use some in our bathroom, and when I looked at how much it was going to take to do the whole house and the cost, I went with regular paint. They have samples you can test, lots of colors, if I remember Homemart carries it, maybe it will fit the bill. I don't remember any odor, not sure about the organic part though.

  12. OR, sometimes one has to return to there home country for a time and return. I think many do this, especailly those like myself who don't draw a retirement yet. And like you, we would like to get a hold of , make that business to stay full time. Like the fellow in a previous post that makes it on e-commerce one needs to be creative these days, thats an avenue I building myself because staying in thailand full time, not just eight months a year with my wife and family is my dream. Good luck.

  13. I've often wondered why rats chew on wiring. Does it taste good? Source of nutrition? Are they just teething?

If you are going to let the job sit unprotected for two years then I'm not sure there's much you can do. Why is it taking so long to seal up the house so that the rats can't get in?

For the wiring that will eventually be concealed (inside a ceiling or behind a stud wall), you could use steel-jacketed wire or run the wire through steel conduits.

Well, it does not go unprotected, I only leave a few months ayear, meanwhile the family is right there, but this problem accured while I was right there, it was like the rats got a craving over night , and not for the wires on the floor like I said but the ones coming out of the light switch boxes, anyhow, some informed first hand experience and input would be good.
  14. I've been building my house for two years now, got the wiring in last spring, dang rats chewed my wires. I had to pull and replace many and when everything was ok, Dang rats climb into the roofing structure and chewed wires there, one even ate a hole in my plastic wiring box to get into my double wall cavity. Yes, the family has poison much, now when I return next week I'll have wiring to pull and replace again. No windows or doors on yet, that come this year too, maybe then the fight will be over, but until then any of you have some tips, something to spray on the wires or some other solution. What really struck me was that there is lots of wire laying on the floor, but they never touch it, instead, climb near vertical to naw at wires exposed at the light switch box.

  15. Have built several houses in Phuket in the past ten years. Always applied two coats of best quality paint. The first acts as a sealer, the second goes on very smooth. Use the best quality, cheaper in the long run.

Ok, I've read this post and the ones before,so, are you using cement paint or a latex. I've seen many cement paint adds in Thai building magizines, so even here looking for good feedback .
  16. Plenty of hits with either spelling, and most of them have the same information which is her role in the Bond movie. I think the OP is looking for more than that.

I did spell her name wrong, I was watching the movie and got wondering what happened to this woman in life, what does she look like now, and the web was only giving me stuff about the film, not really info on her, thought some here at thaivisa might know an answer or two, sometime one can get good feed back that is'nt sarcastic in nature , so I thought I'd post the question.

One of my all time favorite Bond movies. She did have an interesting part in the movie, and seems to have vanished from the screen or anywhere else. Your question got me wondering too. I looked at about 40 google pages, all with the same movie reference. Some of the movie sights were actually requesting input on her, if someone had it.

Yes you see what I mean, it's as this woman has vanished and the photos are all from the film, nothing current. Anyhow if one of you dig something up let all know, see ya
  17. I did spell her name wrong on the post, thought one or two out there might give a little good feedback without sarcasim. I was just wondering what happened to this woman in life, what she looks like, but was'nt getting anywhere on google.Maybe one you might have run across more than I did.
