  2. A bomb blast killed three policemen on Wednesday in Songkhla province.

    suspected Islamic militants.

The railway attack came just hours after a string of about 70 coordinated bomb and arson attacks in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala in late Tuesday that injured at least three peons?

The three provinces have been under emergency decree rule since October 2005, allowing security authorities to arrest suspects without charges, impose bans on public gatherings and other draconian measures.

Bomb blast in Songkhla kills three

A bomb placed on a train track in Songkhla province of Thailand's troubled deep South on Wednesday killed three border patrol policemen and injured a fourth as they ran over the device on a pushcart, radio reports said.

The blast was at 6:40 a.m. Thailand time on the tracks in Chana district of Songkhla, around 720km south of Bangkok.

The bomb, planted at a bridge across a railway at Ban Ta Mang Lak linking Songkhla's Chana and Tepha Districts, was remotely detonated when the police patrol squad reached the area in the Chana municipality.

  3. Just breaking news on television news has the Thaksin motorcade (on the way to the airport to go to Burma) was involved in a multi-vehicle accident. Lots of bleeding policemen and smashed vehicles on the screen. Thaksin apparently uninjureD ANY SUPRISE??????????????ya'oh why doesn't he seek 'comrad'ship' in a still partially remaining paren[t] in good ole' F. Castro. Kuhn C's still probably able to give 'HRA/H' TakeSin good advice. Is Imelda still around---good consort 4 him!

  4. Police deny role in assaults as upcountry rallies banned

In a possible move to derail plans by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) to stage a nationwide demonstration next week, the Interior Ministry yesterday ordered all provincial governors to thwart all future demonstrations against caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra or face severe disciplinary action.

The caretaker government signaled yesterday that harsh repercussions may await PAD demonstrations. Caretaker Interior Minister ACM Kongsak Wanthana yesterday reiterated that no police officers were involved in the violent clashes. However, at his monthly meeting with governors, conducted via video teleconference, ACM Kongsak instructed them to ensure that no anti-Thaksin protests occur in their province or they would face disciplinary action for incompetence. 6. attempting to overthrow a "democratically" [sELF DETERMINED FASCIST--remember 'his' praise re: Sinagpore] elected leader and his government.

Before the end of the year expect a hastily gathered mass of hundreds of deluded Thaksin supporters descending on an anti-Thaksin rally and it's peaceful supporters.

The ensuing violence and SOE will give Thaksin what he ultimately seeks.....the continuance of his premiership and a complete clampdown of any vestigages of free speech and opposition that happen to remain.

LET THERE BE ENOUGH TO pre-clude THIS. Send him to his offshore wealth & his complaciant buttle, driver wife[of sortedness] & children to where oh british virgin? islands!

  8. I think that until recently the idea of "gay" was fairly new. You had your kathoeys and your "men." "Men" could either be straight or "gay kings," which meant active position, without losing any masculine cachet. The kathoeys and softer gay guys were "gay queens."

I think there's much less homophobia here, in the sense that a "straight" man will not necessarily go into a huge personal crisis over having sex with a guy- body contact between friends is much more common. So I think divisions between identities are not so clear-cut, or perhaps not even so important. Unfortunately, I think that exclusionary Western notions of gay *VERSUS* straight are becoming more widespread here, and in a sense they bring homophobia with them.

I don't like to talk with Thais about homophobia in the U.S. because I don't want them to emulate its ugliness. I've heard very nasty comments from exchange students in different schools here and in other Asian countries who more or less thought all the boys around them were gay. The only persons I've met or communicated with who seemed to care a whole lot whether I was gay or straight or create any problems over the issue were foreigners, of course.

    "Steven"

    VERY VERY GOOD
  9. [q

Gay identity is different in Thailand than in the West, they don't identify as gay here.

The only Thais who identify as gay are educated, wealthy, and westernized.

Only men in Bangkok identify as gay, in the rest of the country, they just have homosexual sex but do not identify as gay.

Very few of the guys who work in the go-go bars say that they are gay.

Thai men are not as hung up about what they will do with their bodies.

Thai men are not embarrassed to say that they are bottoms.

Thai gay men cheat a lot / are playboys.

The word "gay" can be used to mean many things, including: masculine, effeminate, versatile.

HOPEFULLY 'FLOOD CONTROL' ALLOWS THIS RESPONSE-IF SO EXCELLENT "straight" on comments. I'd be giggly happy to refure to the ChiangMai Thai newspaper's on ME for "introducing" gay/gayniss? into Lanna turf. KEEP ON WRITING

  10. There is a local branch of something called the "Long Yang" Club which meets in Bangkok; a gay social meeting & discussion group that is supposed to introduce foreigners and Asians of various countries to each other. However, I've always heard mixed reports about the Bangkok branch; never been, myself. Anyone else know much about it?

EWWW lyc is horrid! infested with ugly guys. went to one of their functions (not the bkk ones tho)and hated every minute of it. avoid!!!!! its like the web at nyc but worse. ugh the web. *shudder*

So @ the least can offer observations, opinions/ etc on that aspect of undeniable Thailand. Ciao & Welcome [no baggage, please]

  11. I also want share with you that I was chastised by a Middle Eastern waiter in an Egyptian Bangkok restaurant, for holding my girlfriends hand at the dinner table. It's considered a little offensive in their culture, like putting feet up on chairs in Thailand would be. He was right and I was wrong. I apologised. He was courteous about the matter.

    I disagree with you.

Anyone who opens up an establishment in a foreign country to make money from foreign customers shouldn't be offended when foreigners behave as they normally do in their culture. In Thailand it is not an offence to hold a girlfriend's or wife's hand in a restaurant.

Since the Egyptian restaurant opens its door to foreign customers in Thailand, their waiters should not be surprised or offended because foreigners follow commonly accepted practices in Thailand.

Instead of apologizing to the waiter, I would have suggested to him that if he expects their customers to practice Middle Eastern customs and culture while dining at their restaurant in Thailand they should post a warning sign on the outside of the restaurant listing all practises and customs that will not be tolerated.

I would have reminded the waiter that this is Thailand and not Egypt and if he was offended by my holding hands with my wife or girlfriend I would be happy to leave and spend my money at another restaurant.

The waiter shows his cultural ignorance and intolerance by insisting that people in Thailand modify their behavior in a way that is acceptable to him. It amazes me that people so ethnocentric and culturally intolerant would even choose to live and work in Thailand.

Next thing he'll be want is for all female customers to cover their heads and dine in separate rooms

    RIGHT ON

BANGKOK: -- The 2m sqft development will include a hotel, residential and office buildings, general amenities and a mosque.

More Middle Easterners are moving to Asia, particularly Malaysia, because they felt less welcome in Europe and America due to issues related to terrorism. ???????????????????????????

    --Agencies 2006-08-17

IMHO about as needed as the clap! But then the money is the factor not personal decision.

Less welcome in Europe?? Maybe, but theres definately not going to be a mass exodus from Europe to Thailand.

And Opothai I totally agree with your sentiments, I fear Thailand may yet suffer the blight of excess Multi-culturalism that Plagues England.

SO WHY ARE ALL THESE 'BENIGN' MEs MOVING? SEEMS A BIT LIKE EITHER THEY'VE NOT GOT "ALLAH" ON THEIR 'SIDE' TO ADDRESS ALL THE CONTINUING HEAD-LINE NEWS BS IN THEIR CARVED OUT mESSED UP PIECES OF our only working, Sorta' ONE PLANET or AN EFFECTIVE PROCESS TO "PROCEED"! new form of colonalism//oil wealth the 'west' created, ME's brightly thrieved. PATTAYA: -- On Thursday evening a squad of 70 Bangkok-based police decided it was time they had a little sojourn into the fleshpots of Pattaya and spent some hours wandering about the various beer bar complexes and go-go bars as well as a couple of the more infamous soapy massage joints.

Accompanied by a frothing gaggle of media hacks, all armed with television cameras as well as the latest in still digital cameras, the upstanding men and women of the Bangkok police force visited the Sabailand Massage Parlour on Second Road, at the corner of Soi 3 if any of you are not quite sure where to find it. Here they interviewed a number of the more attractive and younger looking girls, asking them to produce their Identification cards in order to prove that they were all over the legal age to engage in activities involving water, soap and excitable men.

Satisfied with this, the police troop then moved onto a number of beer bars in the Soi 2 area and once again were compelled to chat with the more attractive and younger looking girls, checking identification cards and asking about the health and well-being of sundry family members and farmyard stock.

Then it was into a couple of the go-go bars where many members of the media were excited to find a large number of ladies who were wearing g-string bikinis. The flashbulbs of the cameras in the media scrum helped to really light up the dressing rooms and general area of the chrome pole palaces while the very professional police persons asked the girls to produce their ID cards. Most of the girls were forced to go into their lockers in order to show the plastic cards, explaining it was difficult to keep the card on their person when dressed in not much more than a pair of boots and a smile.

A senior policemen told one bar owner that the 2:00AM closing time should be enforced and that staying open later than this is against the law. The bar owner allegedly told the policeman that he paid a little extra money each month in order to stay open later, but the Bangkok officer said whoever he paid the money to it couldn’t possibly be a genuine member of the constabulary, as this sort of thing was frowned upon. :D:o He warned the bar owner to be wary of mafia types who tried to pass themselves off as policemen in order to extort money from law-abiding citizens.

  14. Now I know its nice to have money and it's more comfortable to not lose face but surely you lose more face by sliding down the greasy pole by your fingernails than walking away with dignity?

Can someone explain the mindset to me here. Somewhere along the line face has become aligned with power.

Where is the dhamma teaching in all this? I presume at one time face meant wisdom, dignity, self respect and maybe a little pride.

Where and when did it become "he with the most marbles?"

IS THAT WHERE THE CLICHE "HE'S LOST HIS MARBLES" CAME FROM. Wake up//'dude's' arrogant, corrupt, etc. follow my link to get YOUR OWN OFF FOR 'SURE' BANK A/C.

  15. ya'oh IT'S NORMAL TO BE 'ASCENENT' IN USA so crazy is totally norm

Hey Shotover, good to see you! I guess the link was taken down after their server crashed from all the hits!

Anyway, I have a feeling that this guy is not the murderer. Yes, he looks the part, but something just does not seem right about the whole thing and his story....I'm pretty sure he is guilty of all those things that he was charged with , but I don't think he was anywhere near the Ramsey home that night. Maybe he was so obssesed with the Jon Benet murder that he actually thought that he was the actual killer - He must have gone out of his way to get as much information as possible about the case, so much so that he became a good suspect..

I, like many Americans, followed this story since the night of her murder, ( It was a BIG deal here ) and there are still many questions left unanswered about the case, like why was the ransom note found at the scene in Patsy Ramey's handwriting? Why was there no footprints at all outside in the newly fallen snow outside the house, and why the Ramsey's never took a lie detector test, among other things...

And I also find it strange that after all this time, they finally find the suspect in Bangkok. A pedophile - in Thailand of all places? What a surprise! Just too convienient a story , if you ask me - it sounds like something you would see on a bad episode of "Cold Case". I would believe the story more if they found him in Latvia, or Uraguay, or even Indonesia. This thing looks similar to how they suddenly found the killer of the Lindberg Baby, out of the blue. Remember that one?

I guess we'll have to wait for the DNA tests to really be sure now....But then again, DNA as evidence was not a factor in winning that other high profile murder case...

Speaking of which, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if next we find out that OJ is really innocent, and that Nicole and Ron Goldman's real killer has finally been found in Phuket as a scuba diving instructor...

  16. ????? dumn/ Maybe smart marketing ploy!!

BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways International (THAI), the country's national flag carrier, has reduced its tight security measures imposed on passengers of both domestic and international flights, effective from August 16.

Newly-appointed THAI President Flying Officer Apinan Sumanaseni told TNA on Wednesday that passengers of all domestic flights and those of internatinal flights are now allowed to bring their bags and carry-on luggage onto planes--based on the airline's normal rules.

However, the airline's ban on liquid items of all types, lighters and matches onto planes remains intact, except sealed-liquid items bought from airports' authorized duty-free shops with formal receipts and medicines in liquid form essential for any passenger on the flights, with a passenger permitting to bring with them unlimited amount of liquid medicines prescribed by doctors but a limited amount of no more than 4 oz a bottle for unprescribed ones.

Baby milk and liquid baby food are also now permitted on board the planes, but must be tasted by the accompanying passenger in the presence of security officers.

Passengers are allowed as well to carry their electronic and electrical equipment--in good order--and switched-off mobile phones on board the planes.

The relaxed rules also apply to passengers on the Bangkok-the United Kingdom, Bangkok-the United States, Bangkok-Australia, Bangkok-the Philippines, Bangkok-Indonesia and Bangkok-Sri Lanka routes, where security surveilance was raised to the highest level over the past week.

The THAI's move followed announcements by the UK and US governments earlier this week to downgrad their terror threat level from critical to severe, or from the red to orange colour, saying intelligence suggested that there is no renewed imminent attack.

Police in London last Thursday (August 10) thwarted a major terrorist plot to blow up aircraft flying from the UK to the United States in mid-flight.

Twenty-four people have been arrested so far in connection with the foiled plot--reportedly targeted aircraft from London, Glasgow and Manchester to the US.

The THAI president said, however, that passengers on the Bangkok-UK route are permitted to carry only a single bag onto planes.

"The size of their bags should not be larger than 45 x 35 x 16 centimetres if the passengers only make a stop-over at a UK airport before flying to other destinations," he noted.

"Passengers who want to fly from the UK to the US are still barred from carrying any bag or luggage onto the planes, except their purses or wallets with necessary documents," he added.

Those flying from Bangkok to the US are also required to report their belongings in luggage to the airline's ground staff who are authorized to request a thorough inspection in suspected cases or ban specific items as part of its precautious measures, according to Flg. Off. Apinan.
