  1. Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a used Volkswagen and was wondering if anyone else here owns one and where they get it serviced.

I don't think there is a dealer in CR.

So, if you use a local mechanic, who? And, do they have any problems with servicing and parts?

    Thanks,

    Rich

  2. I'm just curious as to why anyone would actually want a touch screen on a laptop? To me they seem totally unusable, unless perhaps the laptop has a screen which folds over into a tablet.

I have a Surface Pro and use the touch screen all the time. I use it in "laptop" mode with the type cover 90% of the time.

It's especially useful in Word and excel when you want to scroll, zoom or select a button on the ribbon. It's a lot easier and quicker to touch the screen with minimal hand travel from the keyboard than reach for the mouse.

Win8 in general really works well with a touch screen (swiping down to close programs, from the left to go to you last program etc.)

If anything I think touch screens are more suited to a laptop than a desktop because the screen is closer to you.

  3. Thanks all. I went to the place near the night bazaar today. He is a nice guy.

I can't believe I never noticed such a large watch shop was there before. I must have walk past it dozens of times and never even realised it was there.

  4. I don't have the original. It was on the bike when I bought it in January. It's '96 Intruder.

How did I bend the pointer? Well, my bike is so damn fast, the needle just can't keep up!

    :)

The needle got stuck a few weeks ago. And I was meaning to get it looked at.

Then, the other day it was really hot here. I left my bike parked in the sun for a few hours in the afternoon. When I came back, the needle was bent. The speedo was obviously not built for the heat in Thailand.

  5. Hi all,

does anyone know where I could get a speedometer similar to this in BK or Chiang Mai? It can be larger, but I want the led indicators and would prefer the chrome trim.

I'm in Chiang Rai, so would like to buy it online and then have it posted to me if possible.

I looked on the DrBike and Red Baron sites, but they didn't have anything

    Thanks,

    Rich

  6. Thanks.

I have a Yoobao that I use for my phone, and it works well.

It doesn't put out enough juice to charge my laptop though. It only outputs 5V (standard USB output). The Intocircuit outputs 12V, which is what my laptop needs.

Does anyone know of any external laptop battery packs that are available in Thailand?

I'm not sure if a battery will get stopped at customs if I order it from the US...

  7. +1 for Invade IT

I've ordered a few things from them with no problems. Delivery to Chiang Rai is lot cheaper than flying to Bangkok and going hunting.

I placed an order a few weeks ago on the 9th April (and I was expecting Songkran to delay the delivery). The website said 2-3 days for stock.

They emailed me back on the 10th to say they didn't have the item in stock and the supplier couldn't tell them when they would get more.

They cancelled the order and I got it from eBay. It cost a bit more, but I couldn't be assed waiting.

  8. Well here's an interesting question...

Does one 'drive a motorbike or does one 'ride' a motorbike ?.

    Any thoughts ?.......

For my mind, anything you straddle is ridden. e.g. bicycle, motorcycle, horse.

Anything in which you sit in a chair (usually with a steering wheel, but not always, e.g. a train) is driven. Car, truck, train, bus.

  9. Mae Sai have nothing to do with it. They are the immigration department. You will go there when you get your work permit and then get your visa extended.

But, they have no concerns about whether or not you own a vehicle.

The Land Transport Department (motor registry) is near the airport. It's near the ministry of labour where you will go to get your work permit.

The LTD is a purple building.

You can go there to get your licence and also to change ownership of vehicles.

If you are buying through a dealer, they should be able to do the transfer of ownership for you. Especially if they are waiting on your work permit.

The first bike I bought here I registered in my old school director's name because I didn't have my work permit yet.

He came to the dealer with me, signed some papers and gave them copies of his id. I rode the bike away and then went back a couple of weeks later to pick up the greenbook that had the ownership transferred to him.

I had no problems with that, with police stops or anything, but now I've bought a new bike a couple of months ago and I want to sell my old bike.

I don't work at that school any more, so I have to contact my old director, arrange a time to meet, transfer the ownership to me at the LTD and then be in a position to sell the bike.

Not impossible by any means, but a bit a of a hassle (hence the reason I haven't taken any steps to actually do all of that yet) smile.png

The advantage of having it a local's name is that if you have to leave the country quickly (eg. visa expired/no job) they can still sell the bike if you're not in the country. Provided it's someone you trust enough to do that and send you the money...

My new bike I registered in my name as I bought it privately and and have a work permit now. It will make it easier for me to sell it when the time comes.

As far as I know, you don't need a work permit to register a bike, but the work permit serves as a proof of address.

If you don't have a work permit, you need some other proof of address (residence book or something - I don't know exactly as I use my work permit)

If you have your US licence you should be able to get a Thai one without too much drama. I just had to do a computer exam, colour blindness test and red light reaction test.

No practical test. Since I had car and a bike licence in Australia, they gave me a car and bike licence here.

Your US licence by itself is no good here. You need an international licence to legally drive/ride on the roads. From memory, I had to show both my Aus licence and international licence when I got my Thai licence, but I may be wrong. The international only lasts a year, so I got my Thai licence about a month before the international expired.

    Hope that helps,

    Rich

  10. Hi all,

My Australian passport only has 2 blank pages left, so I need to get a new one.

I'm in Chiang Rai. Can I get one in Chiang Mai, or do I need to go to Bangkok?

When I get my new, do I have to go to immigration to transfer my Non-O visa and extension of stay stamp to my new passport? Or

Do I have to get my work permit or drivers license updated?

I did a search but couldn't find the answer....

    Thanks,

    Richard

  11. A friend at work bought one of the Note 1 copies about 4 months ago. I think he paid 6000 baht also.

It's OK, but a lot slower than my Note 1. (Opening apps, swiping between screens etc.)

Also the camera is pretty crap.

It's not too bad in daylight, but quite bad in low light, and the flash seems to be useless. It also has quite a lag between touching the screen and capturing the photo.

It's running ICS, but I have no idea how you would upgrade it to Jellybean.

I doubt a Samsung ROM would work. It's different hardware inside, despite being a pretty good copy of the external case of the Note 1.

For 6000 baht, it's OK if you just want a cheap and simple web browser/email/chat device.

My friend was upgrading from a tiny Samsung Duos, so he thinks it's great. He still uses it and loves it.

If you have used a Note 1 or 2, then you may not be happy with the performance, but then then again, it costs a lot less.

I don't think it's an AMOLED display. I think it's LCD, but I'm not sure.

  12. Or, don't use the stock kernel.

    I'm using the Note2Core kernel v2.1

I was using it before the exploit was identified, but it doesn't appear to have the vulnerability.

I'm sure there other kernels for all of the devices in which the flaw is not existent.

Granted, it shouldn't even be an issue you have to deal. But it's most likely only going to be a threat to someone downloading a dodgy, or pirated apk to begin with.

In which case, they are probably not running stock anyway.

  13. Has anyone seen the Note 2 Smart Dock in stores yet? If so, where and what price?

I don't expect to see it in Chiang Rai any time soon (we still don't even have the S3 dock in the Samsung shop, but I managed to find it Chiang Mai a few months ago).

But if it's in the shops in BK, and I have a price, I can ask a friend to get one next time they go to BK.

They are not very interested in tech, so I'd have to tell them the shop to go to and give them a printout of what to buy and how much to pay :)

    thanks,

    Rich

  14. Have you seen that Samsung with the projector screen?

If you mean the Galaxy Beam, one of my friends have one.

The projector function is OK, but it is nowhere near as strong as a regular projector, so you need the room to be quite dark to be able to see the projected image well.

Spec wise, it is more on par with the S2 than the S3.

I think my friend bought it because the sales person in the store wow'd her in the store with the projector. She doesn't know much about phones so wouldn't have compared specs.

  15. You can set up Gmail to check POP accounts so that they appear in your Gmail inbox/client.

I just use Gmail on my phone and PC now and have 3 other POP accounts linked to it.

It tags the different accounts so they're easy to separate in the inbox, and if you want, you could have it automatically sort them into separate folders.
